    Hi Kevin, and thanks for creating the nice video on Skywave Linux! I'm the developer and sure am happy to see people using it and not having too hard a time getting started.
    It has a few rough edges that'll get fixed over time. One of them is that script for Dump1090. Once it gets your inputs, it just races ahead and starts Firefox - even if Dump1090's webserver hasn't finished starting. LOL, I should make it wait and perhaps auto detect the hardware type.
    That Websdr script may be different in the next update too. The list is too long, so it should instead come up as a page in Firefox: the live lists linked in large font and those many favorites in a neat table and smaller font.
    Well, enough rambling about the future. I hope hams, SWLs, plane spotters, and broadcast news hounds find it useful.
    73,
    Phil AB9IL.

      Hi Phil. You might get a few questions now that you've popped up here. It's a nice project, happy to spread the word about it. I'd love to see it default to a different desktop with a real menu rather than unity. Under unity, it's hard to see what all is available if you don't already know what to type in the search bar. Beginners to linux will probably miss most of the goodies that are installed.

    Well I just downloaded and ran skywave...and as usual it does NOT work with RSP2 from SDRplay. I dont know what it is about this radio..but it is a pain in the u know what to install...It is not listed in the pull down box, withing gqrx, where the Device 'should' be.

    Kevin, those SDR Linux apps are terrible compared to the ones on Windows! I just installed HamPi on a Raspberry Pi and it came with CuteSDR, CubicSDR and Gqrx. I couldn't get any of them to work at first. CuteSDR didn't like the first 2 cheap black $6.00 dongles from Ebay that I tried but I finally get it to work pretty well with a more expensive model in a blue metal case called the RTL.SDR R820T2 Tumer with a dolphin on the front that can be tuned down to HF in Windows but I couldn't find any way to do that in CuteSDR so it still only gets VHF in Linux. I could never get the other two to work even with that better dongle however all the dongles work OK with SDRSharp in Windows!

    I think I solved your problem with dump1090. If you don't use the plus and minus on the latitude and longitude it will place the United States somewhere in China. I made the alteration and it works fine. The pulse audio problem is in the pulse audio switcher. It will default to HDMI audio, instead of Built In audio.

  • @neiltan1939
    @neiltan1939 3 роки тому

    You may have already figured it out but with 1099 dump, it defaults to China because you didn't put a minus in front of your Longitude. 73 Neil wa4chq

    The aircraft tracking, is that picking that up from the aircraft or from a other source? Because course almost all aircraft should have transponders that give out that information. Even a Cessna 172 should be giving out all that information. The FAA receive all of them and uses that to keep everyone apart. Most small aircraft like the Cessna 172 don't have all the things to receive and decode it all so the FAA receives it all does the computing and send it out to the small aircraft to display. Not sure if at the time you made this if the rule was in affect your that almost all aircraft would have this. With all the information given it looks like that is the up link. Sent from the aircraft is the heading and other information but would not have flight numbers, only the code that is given to each one. The ATC computer then puts the flight numbers type of aircraft, with the information form the aircraft like altitude, heading, speed, and Lat Long. Yes I took flying lessons. But it costs much more than I could afford to keep up with.

    I was only looking for a Windows desktop software that displays the radio receiver and connects to a WebSDR server when I came across this distro. I like that it has a lot of most popular WebSDR services built into it if you don't have a SDR dongle to listen but that it also has popular software if you do have such SDR dongles. Reminds me of the days i'd spend hours with my Tandy Radio Shack DX440 listening to shortwave in the 80's. Downloading it now.

      You can get smoother playback if you pause the video right after it starts playing and let it buffer for a bit, then hit play. Sometimes that will let the buffer get far enough ahead to let the video play through without interruption. Sometimes.

    • @loughkb

      There's a kernel module you need to blacklist. I don't remember all of the details, but I think it was an old analog TV module that see's the RTL dongle and loads, blocking gqrx from seeing it.
      Search for "linux rtl-sdr blacklist" and you'll probably find a post or two.
      It's an easy fix. You just have to create/edit a blacklist file and reboot so the module doesn't load.

    • @loughkb
      @loughkb  7 років тому

      There's a program, I think it's called WinImage. It's designed to dump and ISO image to a USB drive. Do a search on winimage. If that doesn't find it, seach for iso image to USB windows and you'll probably find it. Once you've dumped the image to the USB drive, just boot from it. How you do that will depend on your computer. Most machines have a key you can hit during power up that will give you a boot menu.

      Well, the nice thing about the live image is that you can boot your existing machine with it and not worry about what you already have installed. You can play around with it without having to find another machine. It's totally safe.
