What makes this so powerful is how Will shoots Jaydens dream down at first. We see him recognize his own weakness in real time. He realizes he is projecting his own failures on to his kid.
I also interpreted it as him shooting down Jayden’s dream, to see his reaction and then kind of jumping in and letting him know fight for what you dream of. But I think you are right on the money
"People can't do something themselves, they wanna tell you you can't do it." So true and a great quote to remember out in the real world when people try and put you down.

Will Smith isn't acting in this scene with his son, He's really giving his son some truthful knowledge. He was really talking to his son from the heart in this scene.
In high school, everyone said I wasn't going anywhere in life, now 5 years later I got into one of the top Graduate programs (MA of Neuroscience) in the world (top 1% of schools). I am still doubted by many.
Man, everybody has watched this movie and says it's a good movie but sometimes it feels like nobody has really watched it because how can you not cry as you watch this movie and relate to it. This is scene is the most powerful and important part of the movie in my opinion. I swear, everybody knows this scene and how true and deep the message is yet nobody FUCKING practices what this scene preaches. I swear, man, many people bash on a person's dreams or take them away because they never put themselves in their shoes. Sometimes, I feel people watch something and know something's true yet never actually understand it because they never practice or incorporate it into their own lives. Not until you devote yourself to your dream no matter will you realize the true meanings of this movie. You'll look at this movie in a different light. The Pursuit of Happyness isn't a huge obstacle you will overcome one day. The pursuit is everyday, everyday you have to be working on your dream despite what people say. FUCK PEOPLE this is your dream and you only got one shot. Another one of my favorite parts in the movie is when Will Smith says "It was right then that I started thinking about Thomas Jefferson on the Declaration of Independence and the part about our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. And I remember thinking how did he know to put the pursuit part in there? That maybe happiness is something that we can only pursue and maybe we can actually never have it. No matter what. How did he know that?"
I feel you brother in this day and age I feel like everyone will sell their closest luved one just to get ahead. Humanity is slowly declining and I see it and feel it everyday!
even sometimes you will pass by a period when you think you will not continue or you will not achieve their dreams this is when sometimes people leave their dreams Only Remember NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE
The first time I saw this scene I literally cried when he told his son "don't ever let somebody....." because my father never told me anything like that it would have been great to hear
I hope you don't feel too bad, yes our parents can have a big effect on us but it also comes from our own motivation. Because my own father told me something similar like this, which was great but I'm not the type of person to take a leap of faith all the time and do things spontaneous constantly, so it didn't necessarily affect me as positively as it sounds.
No such thing as a perfect parent. We all make mistakes. I really like this scene because you see a father recognizing he just made one, and he immediately checked himself and corrected it.
This movie is so inspirational for me where I’m at in life right now. I’m currently in a pursuit of happiness! I’ve had a lot of disappointment and have been discouraged by so many important people over the past couple of years! I believe victory is around the corner!
I had to tell my daughter this today, she doubts herself so much and I just want her to see what she’s capable of. Anything is possible with faith you just have to believe
This movie gave me so much motivation to move forward with my life!! When I watched I was working groceries (nothing wrong with it) making crap money a week!! In less than 5 years now I have my own business and able to afford things I could only dream of. So I say don’t let no one put you down. Go for it put in work and u will succeed.
I haven’t seen this scene probably since the movie came out. That was a long time ago. I remember thinking the scene was good then. Now I have a son who is about the age as the boy in this clip. I broke down and cried watching this. The world is a tough place. And we need to protect our kids from it while also preparing them for the immense challenges that lie ahead. A scene like this helps remind me how important that job is.
I know it’s a movie but I always love when a parent talks with their child like an equal, has an “adult” conversation. Even if the kid is old enough to fully understand or fully grasp the concept of the conversation. My oldest brother does this with his kid and it’s awesome. But there’s always time for imagination and games. :)
I wish I had me a strong father figure in my life when I were a kid. My father didn't taught me nothing. Didn't even care about my education. That's why I love this movie. Because of the strong relationship between Will and his son. He was poor, but he was still there for his son. Love it.
When your parents decide to crush your dreams, I agree Will Smith I will keep my head high and won't let anyone tell me I can't do it! I will protect that dream
This scene hits home because all of us who watched it and resonated with it ultimately have something from our past - a chip on your shoulder from failure. And although we aren't perfect and can make a mess of things - in this moment when watching a film - you're able to at times live vicariously through these characters. Beautiful movie.
Sometimes...it is our children that teach us more than our mentors or peers. Sometimes it's about analyzing yourself and seeing the adult you are raising. That is what makes this scene so powerful.
This might sound a bit cliche but this scene literally made me not quit on my business and 2 years later here I am thanking this movie and scene for keeping my dream alive when I needed it the most.
Words are powerful. My Dad never told me anything of inspiration my whole life, in fact he shot down any dreams I had about school and my future. When I have a kid I’m going to build him up and father him like the father I needed in my life.
It was always a dream of mine to participate in a science project, but when I approached my teachers to enrol into it, they demotivated and told me that there is no way a kid like me can make it and that they won't let me participate. It had almost gotten to me, but my eyes are now open, I told them that I can if I want to if teachers (referring to them) actually try to provide students with appropriate information and not trash talk to them. I will give everything I have and will also provide with progress updates. Wish me luck and don't let others decide your destiny, your journey is only yours
I imagine that every single person that has seen this movie, sheded tears. I don't believe it's possible not to do so. Truly a touching and inspiring movie. Much respect to the man that inspired such a masterpiece, the actors, directors and everyone who had a hand into bringing this story to the screen to make all of our asses cry lol. Just beautiful.
I'm here because I watched this clip in college class today and I was learning about how Will Smith had a fixed mindset here at first because he talked down on the kid then his mindset changed to a growth positive mindset and he inspired the little kid to chase his dreams even if your own father tells you you won't get better. That's the kind of inspiration I need bro. I watched the right video for this. 😢 I even shed a tear thinking how deep this moment was.
A lot of parents don't even notice moments like this. Not don't care - don't _notice._ They don't notice the moments where they deeply hurt their child. And even when they do notice, they tend to think it's no big deal, they'll get over it, they won't even remember it the next day. So they don't even properly apologize, let alone try to make amends. I really appreciate parents who notice when they've hurt their child and take the time to fix it.
Never had this kind of talk with my dad. He wasn't always there and if he did, it was only during the good times. This is so inspirational and made me think that if I ever have kids, this is the kind of father I would like to be. I still love my father though and I am thankful to be the person I am today.
This movie and clip has many aspects that resonate. Will Smith realizes that he totally crushed his son and potentially his spirit. He did recover the conversation well by readdressing the conversation with his son and ensuring he understood that he should always fight for what he wants and what his dreams are. It was touching.

All my life I’ve been supporting everyone saying You can’t do this and that, that girl will never go out with you, it’s gotten me to the point of being a very socially awkward person and having low self esteem, but i owe it to my self to change my way of thinking and be a confident person from this day on. I won’t let anyone tell me I can’t do anything anymore.
Today , I really needed to watch this amazing scene. Today, some one told me , do not follow this dream , you are a girl , better to settle for something easier , you can't withstand the pressure. The person who told me this shattered my heart because I always considered him my inspiration and role model . I expected support and encouragement from him. He gave me one of my greatest disappointments . From this day on , this person has no place in my heart or life. I will never stop pursuing my dream.
This means more to me now as a working adult than when I watched this movie as a child and later in college. Starting college you think you have it all figured out and that you are on the path to your dream. Then you often hit roadblocks. My job is good, but not my dream job. I want to keep dreaming and I want to go for it. I want to still believe that I can have the life I've always wanted. This speech is a call to me to reawaken the dreams I thought died.
When I first saw this video I remember when I was a kid and told my parents I wanted to be in the marines and my brother and my parents told me that if I could barley survive school that I wouldn't survive in the marines when I turned 18 and graduated out of high school I joined after my first tour I came back to my parents and told them the story about what they told me .... They said they didn't even know what they told me until I saw this movie
Well done👏🏿👏🏿 I appreciate you serving in the armed forces, you again just like may others, have proven those who doubt others wrong, you are an everyday hero thank you for sharing your story.
Oh my god, so inspiring. I also once told people that I want to enroll at the police academy and be a cop. They laughed their asses of me and said other downgraiding things. I cried like a child upon hearing that. But now, I'm gonna prove to them that they're wrong. After college, I'm gonna train to be a cop.

This movie taught me a lot, life is difficult, you get hit with obstacles in life that you have to overcome, sometimes it’s hard but it’s gets better, it always gets better never stop fighting for what you believe in
My dad, with his triumphant moments and his, well, whatever… he taught me never to blame anyone for my mishaps and tribulations. It took me a while but I understand now. Thank you Dad, ya rascal…
I'M NOT EVEN WATCHING THE MOVIE. I CAN HEAR IT IN THE BACKGROUND AND IT'S MAKING ME CRY. THIS MOVIE CAME ACROSS MY MIND LAST NIGHT. I DIDN'T KNOW IT WAS GOING TO. AIR TODAY.
The ball rolling to the thing his ex wife was saying he can't sell.. she you can't do it. Is almost like what clicked in his head. He was being a hypocrite. He realized that and said don't listen to me, you can do whatever you want if you dream it. Protect that dream. Don't ever tell your kids they can't do something.. they'll surprise you one day.
I remember my parents didnt like it when i got into nursing school 12 years ago. They wanted me for higher things, but my momma saw this happiness i had in my life and how excited i was when i was in college. She sat me down and asked me to forgive her for what she said to me, and that as long as she sees me happy like this, thats all she asks in life. Now she says to me how proud she is of me, everytime we talk on the phone and i tell her about my hard shifts. I love this scene so much, i hope i can tell the same thing to my child one day. ❤
I used to say this to my ex… he would still give up… and he did give up at the very last moment… it broke my heart in pieces. And I could not help him anymore… 😖😔😢😭🥺
"You got a face? You got to protect it. People can't slap something themselves, they wanna tell you you can't slap it. You wanna slap? You gon get it, period."
I remember in August I was watching this movie and this scene hit close to home and I remember breaking down crying thinking I don’t have what it takes I texted my dad. The girl I was dating left me at the time and I just lost so much and it really hit me close to home and I felt like I lost so much!
i remember when i first started my degree people were saying i was making a big mistake since it's hard and i wasn't that young (28 and computer programming major) after graduated, i was working for a sh*tty company, enough for a rent and food, barely getting paid, and people were telling me to change career and get a job at a call center instead met the hottest girl and people were telling me she is out of my league i didn't listen to them, just believe in your dream and my guts now making 6 figure salary at a good place man, this is so true
You know I’ve watched a lot of speeches by successful people: Elon Musk, Michael Jordan, Jeff Bezos, the famous Arnold Schwarzenegger speech. Not once have I ever heard them tell the audience what they can’t do.
I used to dream about being a guitar player, I used to practice 6 hours per day.. Till my fingers hurt. One day my grandma came to me and said "you're pretty good, huh? but you know, this wont take you anywhere.. You need to do something that will give you money and a future.." and that was enough to make me lose motivation. I wonder what kind of future I would have today if I kept following my dream
You would probably have performing arts school debts. Touring with choirs and bands, getting gigs at restaurants, b’day parties and weddings if you’re lucky. Some people are lucky. That’s the the end of ‘what if’. Time to focus on ‘now’. If you aren’t happy, do something. Find a hobby, decorate your place. Advertise to get with musical locals and friends, to make music for fun, part time, so it doesn’t crash with your work/life balance.
My favorite movie of all time. Honesty been giving out hope that I’ll ever be able to accomplish my dreams lately. Things just haven’t been going my way as of late and it’s hard to find happiness in where I’m at. But that doesn’t mean that I’m going to stop trying because someone tells me “you can’t do that” or “that’s not realistic”. I’m going to see my dream through to the end, and hopefully at some point have kids and teach them the same thing. Whoever you are, wherever you are, keep reaching for your dreams.
,The actors, Mr Smith and his son Jaden Smith make you feel your living the movie with them.♥️ Great Movie ,What's so special for me it's based on a true story.
What makes this so powerful is how Will shoots Jaydens dream down at first. We see him recognize his own weakness in real time. He realizes he is projecting his own failures on to his kid.

Y’all don’t realize this went beyond acting, this was will REALLY talking to his son.
@Blackpilled Saint Here in my country, cops need a bachelor's degree in Criminology or any other 4 year course.
@@baltazarandrada8793 I hope you succeed. Seriously, i mean it. You seem like a decent person, and lord knows that we need cops now more than ever with a clear concscious and an unshakable sense of honor and justice.

@@Da1337Man Thank you man.
How can you dislike this? You have to be pretty miserable! This clip is so powerful!
2019 Still use this as my inspiration.
Great actor delivering great dialogue.. love it 👏🏽✍️🎭
just seen a father & son the gym & it reminded of this particular scene in this movie .. kinda teared up man , life is so beautiful .. i’m so thankful for the man father is #47 & fathers jj
1:34 I didn’t know periodt was in 2006 lol
Oscar worthy performance from Will in this scene, imo. His delivery is spot on
This movie taught me a lot, life is difficult, you get hit with obstacles in life that you have to overcome, sometimes it’s hard but it’s gets better, it always gets better never stop fighting for what you believe in
My dad, with his triumphant moments and his, well, whatever… he taught me never to blame anyone for my mishaps and tribulations.
AIR TODAY.
This speech is very good parents should embrace what he says
You will and I'm happy you experienced it. Now your child will be happy. Such an amazing person from your comment alone.
Will someone put away these damn onions
jungleme77
*grabs onions and cries* I got u.
Onions make me sad :(
Omg I cried so much during this movie xD
Below Average? what happened to pass it to Will on the fresh prince
Well, the fresh Prince ended, and then several years later Will decided to star in this film. That's more or less what.
Gives me goosebumps every time
You gotta respect people because you don’t know what there going through
This is a really powerful scene just love watching this over and over.
I used to say this to my ex… he would still give up… and he did give up at the very last moment… it broke my heart in pieces. And I could not help him anymore… 😖😔😢😭🥺
I’m so sorry for this and wish you peace
I will never stop loving this scene
Fantastic life advice!
Something everyone needs to hear once in their life. Even loved ones can bring you down.
"You got a face? You got to protect it. People can't slap something themselves, they wanna tell you you can't slap it. You wanna slap? You gon get it, period."
This comment is underrated. This made me crack up lol
I remember in August I was watching this movie and this scene hit close to home and I remember breaking down crying thinking I don’t have what it takes I texted my dad. The girl I was dating left me at the time and I just lost so much and it really hit me close to home and I felt like I lost so much!
i remember when i first started my degree people were saying i was making a big mistake since it's hard and i wasn't that young (28 and computer programming major)
after graduated, i was working for a sh*tty company, enough for a rent and food, barely getting paid, and people were telling me to change career and get a job at a call center instead
met the hottest girl and people were telling me she is out of my league
i didn't listen to them, just believe in your dream and my guts
now making 6 figure salary at a good place
man, this is so true
This movie hits differently 🥺🥺😭😭😭😭
You know I’ve watched a lot of speeches by successful people: Elon Musk, Michael Jordan, Jeff Bezos, the famous Arnold Schwarzenegger speech. Not once have I ever heard them tell the audience what they can’t do.
Shout out to all of the fathers in the world
I used to dream about being a guitar player, I used to practice 6 hours per day..
I love my dad so much. He is very much like Will Smith in this movie. A guy who knows what fighting for your dream means.
You learn so much about life in watching The Pursuit of Happyness.
