- Tuberculosis (TB) is the leading cause of death among people living with HIV. In 2018, Zambia was one of the highest HIV-associated TB burden countries, and its government prioritized TB preventive treatment (TPT) as a key strategy towards TB elimination by 2030. CDC, the Government of Zambia, and partners collaboratively embarked on a campaign that scaled up TPT from 8% to 90% of people living with HIV by the end of 2022. Over the same time period, over 1.1 million people were initiated on TPT, the rate of HIV-associated TB was cut in half, and there was a near 80% decline in TB deaths among people living with HIV in Zambia.
