Motor yacht almost destroys my boat!

  • I was med moored at the island of Kea in Greece and the motor yacht next to me didn't not properly set their anchor. Their anchor picked up mine and the motored away at speed and nearly pulled my anchor, chain and windlass off my point and the damage would have been substantial.

Hey Bobbie, I love your channel and have been following you when for years. I am a USA retired fighter weapons officer and I volunteer with the locals Doctors Without Borders (DWB) clinics on the islands of Samos and Lesvos and have done so for the past 6yrs. The camps on those islands are more detention camps for refugees coming out of Turkey, Syria and few other places that should remain nameless. Both islands are overloaded with refugees so our clinic works 10-12 hours a day. Both islands are beautiful so on the rare time we would get off we flocked to the beaches. We are not going to be able to work the camps on either island since we will be in Ukraine setting up more clinics in the eastern part of the country. Keep up enjoying life and liven like a rock star. -- Dee

Our last charter was in 2017 out of Athens. My wife and I swore we'd never go back. Some of the "sailors" we encountered should never have been allowed on a boat. Incompetent and rude. It is a shame because the Greek islands are worth seeing. Saying you need to be vigilant of any surrounding boats is an understatement. Your "gymnastics" brought back some very unpleasant memories for me. Best of luck going forward.

What a cluster F$CK- That yacht had many larger spots available to park the boat, but they chose the tight spot right next to you. It can be frustrating.

When you shared the Med-Mooring piece, my first thought was; lots of people must hook the chains... sure as shit it happened. Sorry you had to deal with it, but you did a great job with damage control Bobby. Cheers.

Nothing like rank-amateurs' boating amongst experienced sailors. Never was crazy about Med-Ties, but that's what you have to deal with in that part of the world. Admittedly more challenging than just "dropping the hook" in crowded harbors/bays, when amateurs don't understand tides, currents and winds. Thanks for all you do, with or without a crew. 😎

I had a guy trying to dock a new boat near mine, it was clear just from his approach to the dock he didn’t know what he was doing. After almost ramming the dock twice and a close call with my boat…..I talked him in….he admitted it was his first boat….😮…..most of time…just slow down…gives you a chance to recover.

Bobby I feel your pain! We have had this happen. Great job showing the side of yachting that no one considers. It goes from perfect to SH#t show in blink of an eye. Sadly it if often charter powerboats or cats that cause chaos through lack of skill or total arrogance. Their beliefs that because they paid a company alot of money they have 'the right' to be there creating dangerous situations. But like I said great job showing it and hope there was no damage.

At 3:53 you show the awning above the cafe... that is the basic style that was used 2,000 plus years ago above the Greek Coliseum to shade the spectators, while the gladiators were fighting each other or a lion. Some things don't change. When it works it works.

In fact no one I know on any forum has been able to do it. At this point I don't even bother. It better to take measure not to slip off the boat like tethers.

    From TQA
My setup allows me to poke a 4 ft long 1/2 dia stainless steel rod into the chain locker to push over the castles from the deck while lifting the anchor. This works for me.
NB Push the first 2 castles towards the stern. This prevents the later chain piles from being covered by the early ones falling back on passage.

For all of the wind issues you note there in the Med, do you think boaters are better off with a motor yacht? Just wondering since it seems to blow in the opposite direction you need to go all too often. It had to be an issue back in the sail only days; something planned around, I guess.
