The background dancers are a part of the performance, story and visuals Taemin wants to convey so he pays attention to the smallest details. Him and his team always picks dancer that would match and complete him on stage to give the best performance. And like you said he always shines no matter who is on stage with him so the dancer can be as flashy as they want. I would recommend watching his Japanese tours(I think you can find it on UA-cam easily), the Japanese dancers he works with are insanely good and they somehow have an even better chemistry with Taemin.

I was told that Taemin has two dance crews, his Korean dancers which are very good and his Japanese dancers which are even better.
