Back in the 70s when the show was new, my Dad would purposely miss the beginning so he could solve the mystery alongside Colombo.
I tried doing that, but the storyline usually makes it pretty obvious anyway.
Isn’t the guilty person always the one who Columbo won’t leave alone?
@@IrradioMan the mystery isn't just the guilt. It's how and why, and how Columbo solves it. A lot of key info is at the beginning of the episode
That's a true fan.
@Bobbie Charles yeah I watched a mini documentary on the series and I can't remember who coined the phrase, but Columbo, instead of being a "whodunnit" is a "howcatchem". It's "intrigue without mystery". Either way it's pretty obvious who the killer is, but it is kind of nice that you can miss the beginning of the episode (or not) and still thoroughly enjoy it for the cat and mouse chase... Or maybe it's a duck chasing a fox? Lol
I've never understood what people see in shows like CSI and NCIS. But Columbo, on the other hand, I never get tired of watching.
It’s all about people’s opinion
@@TheMan750 It's all about quality. Quality of writing. Quality of acting. Quality of production.
You ve just read mmy mind! You are absolutely right👍
I never understood why people liked chocolate ice cream. But vanilla ice cream on the other hand, i never get tired of eating.
Columbo is who Batman wishes he could be.
I’m 26. Only started getting into Columbo the last few months. This is seriously one of the best television series I’ve ever watched. The wit, the intellect and the kind-hearted nature portrayed by Peter Falk in the form of Lieutenant Columbo is hard to top. Brilliant in every sense of the word.
welcome aboard the Columbo train! Spread the word to a new generation
Welcome to the club! :) I was introduced to Columbo when I was 14 or 15 and I instantly loved him. He was like the drunken fist of sleuthing-constantly making the suspect underestimate and misjudge him. And Peter Falk is just flat out amazing. Enjoy the ride! :)
I was 20 when I saw my first Columbo in 1983 and I was instantly hooked on it. I had a Betamax VCR at the time and I used to get two episodes into a tape, and kept on buying tapes and filling them up with Columbo episodes. This one of the episodes I remember most from that time as well as the William Shatner episode "Fade into Murder", which was similar to this in that murderer also used a new fangled video recorder with a huge shoulder mounted video camera connected to it, to try to disguise the real time of when he committed the murder.
you see: good stuff is appreciated by the new generation.
Discovering the series about a month ago, it was on tv when I was younger but didn’t pay attention back then. Now binge watching, this series is pure gold. Season 5 here we go!
Despite his tactical buffoonery, my favourite segments of Columbo are when he delivers a condemnatory monologue with deadly precision. "How did it get to the art gallery? By your own testimony you took it there."
Yep, he's incredibly articulate and incisive, which catches his suspects completely off guard. Watching Columbo on a case is kind of like watching a great boxer bob and weave around the ring, and just when you blink, he comes in for the knockout blow
I also like that even though we know the murderer, there are still little things that Columbo picks up that the average person wouldn't think about, so there is actually an element of mystery because of the clues. Like when he questioned the footprints outside of the house and questioned why there were no footprints of the "thief" in the house.
Increasingly getting details is how cops get arrests in real life too, most liars have painted a vague painting in their mind and their story breaks down after some questions, those who have put a bit of thought into the details could fool you for 5 minutes, but an hour or two or interview theyve little to no chance to have a consistent story. And especially considering theres many things that can and do go wrong in the world, witnesses, and a plethora of evidence a person wouldn't think of, then things become really hard. And on top of all that a killer would have an excuse that makes sense in their own heads, but falls outside human nature, an unnatural reaction, a very strange thing to do. And cops through questioning will notice "well they seem to be behaving normally for everything else, but this one thing concerning the murder, they haven't! Well that doesn't make sense I'm going to keep on digging" which is very Columbo like.
And years ago I used to think Columbo wasn't very realistic but after seeing a number of police interrogation videos, it was more in line with real life than I thought!
"Tactical buffoonery" that's a perfect description of his modus operandi
When Columbo brings an officer with him, it's not just arm candy...
+n ge: Has this been confirmed ?
I'm surprised he didn't do this more often. On more than one occasion the suspect has tried to kill Columbo when he or she realises that Columbo has them but fortunately for Columbo he survives.

THE TRUTH!!!!🙅🏽♀️😊🙅🏽♀️😊🙅🏽♀️😊🙅🏽♀️😊🙅🏽♀️😊🙅🏽♀️
And when the officers name is Bronson you know he means business.
I love how they did something impossible in this episode. They're able to zoom in on the invitation in a recorded video, as if it was possible to enhance the resolution. What's funny about it is that they did it 30-ish years before CSI started doing the same thing on their show. Of course, in CSI, it's even more ridiculous, but at least in Columbo is was logical because they were trying to highlight all this fancy new technology.
Ah, but the murderer even states, "*Everything* is possible with this equipment." He must know something we don't :-p
@UCOqDy-Z3VdJtwcXdf7xOFRg So, if Columbo used some sort of mind ray to read someone’s thoughts and establish whether they were guilty, that would be ok, since the existence of such a device had not been precluded in previous episodes? Don’t be ridiculous. Columbo is a police procedural, not science fiction.
By the time of CSI, we were all ourselves as internet users experts in video technology and it was clearly false. At this time, as you say, it was a brave new world.
This was a common (and irritating) trope for decades in a ton of movies and tv shows. Ironically, with 8k (and beyond) cameras we can finally zoom/crop deep into a video, just in time for that scene from Blade Runner to be correct (still no flying police cars though).
The zoom-in was only a magnification of about 4x. Doesn't seem that unreasonable - especially compared to the ridiculous blowups in modern day shows where they use a reflection off a shiny surface (mirror or car window) from a security camera, 50ft away, with maybe 4x this tapes' resolution.
The people behind the scenes hardly ever receive the credit they deserve. I would like to give a shout out to the writers that came up with all these fabulous ideas. 🙂❣
Peter Falk should go down as one of the top actors of all time.
Yes, and mostly for this one character. Peter Falk realized it was his perfect role. When “Columbo” was being cast, he is said to have told his agent, “I would kill to play this part.”

I love Columbo, it's made me such a better killer!
Whenever Colombo says lines like '..you know i don't know much about..', it's a given that *everything* after that is something he knows more than enough about to convict the murderer.
This was one of the better episodes. Oskar Werner was outstanding in it. The way Columbo gets the murderer with the missing invitation on the desk is really cunning. RIP Peter Falk, RIP Oskar Werner.

""To show that this technology is modern, I want the buttons in every color"

"I MEAN EVERY COLORRRRRRRRRRR!!!!"
I remember seeing an interview of Peter Falk and they asked him what was it like being famous. He very realized how famous he was when he was on vacation in the Andes trying to get away from the attention. he was in a small village on a mountain and a villager came up top him and said Colombo! That is when he realized the power of TV.
5:04 Columbo is such a savage. Dropping his cigar ash all over that guy's video room.
Did you see the episode with the murdering twins?
He flicked his cigar on a clean floor and the housemaid shouted at him and kicked him out. Lol
The guy literally went into full blown seizure after he got busted!
True, that's why Columbo should have a medic on stand by every time he comes to arrest someone.
That "guy" is the great Oskar Werner, star of the Truffaut classic "Fahrenheit 451"!
@@wiseonwords WOW! He worked with the famous Francois Truffaut?! I didn't know that, interesting. I'm impressed.
Lol!!
Wonderful acting by Werner.
It's a pity that you cut it right before the tears of the wife, it's a very powerful scene.
Gina was one of the great cryers. Not an easy skill.
I love how at the end of the episodes, Columbo says, "Officer."
Sergeant!, sometimes.
I don't like it because it means "the feast is over" ...
The greatest acting other than Peter Falk's is the moment when the villain loses his mind as his alibi collapses.
That would be interesting if they could have got Klaus Kinsky to play this role.
This classic series should be used as the blueprint to how you produce the perfect tv cop/detective show,...great writing , intelligent acting , and intriguing , interesting and entertaining storylines that keep you hooked and interested right up to the end,....despite knowing the murderer from the very beginning,....the mark of a great show
Even with only one eye Columbo was able to spot that tiny detail and bust the murderer. Incredible!
Columbo had two eyes. Peter Falk had one eye.
Doesn't Columbo say three eyes are better than one to another officer when he offers help in one episode?
@@charlesbechen821 I would like to hear a reply to this? Anyone?
@@j.dragon651 Yes he does, Columbo has a glass eye 🔍 👁
If you want to know what it's actually like, I only have one eye after a terrible injury some years ago. The only disadvantages are loss of depth perception and narrower field of view but as far as noticing details or seeing anything it's not any hindrance so I don't think it would be any handicap for his investigative abilities.
Imagine if Columbo was filmed today. At least one of his suspects would have made a snarky comment about his eye while being arrested.
Peter Falk was at a baseball game and an umpire made a lousy call. Falk removed his glass eye and offered it to the umpire “here, maybe this will help you see better”. EPIC
Much as I've found myself enjoying some of the remake shows these days, I can't think of anyone who could pull off a modern version of Columbo. Falk left a gigantic shadow and being in it would frighten any actor trying to succeed him in his most famous role.
If Columbo was filmed today, Columbo would be a gender-fluid otherkin of color...anything else would be something-ist (always "racist," like everything, but more)

@@ThehakkeMadman And the same for " Candidate for a crime" as well. Poor wifes.
or "Prescription: Murder", maybe the poorest of them all : /
When Columbo explains it was the football replay that led him to the damning evidence it means that he suspected something before that but until then couldn't think of any way to demonstrate it.
Plus it's also another small reference to his blue-collar everyman persona.
He generally does. Like, even pretty early on, he often has an idea who is guilty, then the rest is just him patiently hounding them, asking questions, poking at the stated facts.
Unfortunately, that explanation was a bit of magic. Resolution on video cameras back then wasn't particularly good, and the idea that you could "blow up" an image infinitely isn't even a reality today.
This was probably one of the easiest who done-its for columbo. He just had to prove it. There were no other reasonable suspects. The killer is just out of camera range and this guy has the whole house wired tighter than fort knox.
One of the best parts is left out: Columbo’s look of compassion to the wife after her husband is taken away.
Yes
We need a documentary on the writers that worked on columbo, it's amazing they came up with story's like this
There is a documentary video on this topic.
When will these fools ever learn!? Columbo is a genius!
Columbo by his own admission isn't a genius, he said in one episode that he isn't that smart and he makes mistakes in every case, the difference between him and the killer is he can make loads of mistakes, the killer no matter how smart only needs to make one mistake.
He’s just very observant. The murderers always let down they guard because they perennially underestimate him.
They only learn once its too late, lol.
It is also his perceverance! He just can let go before the case is solved!!! And he has an eye for details other people do not even notice!
That's the idea. He comes off as a stumbling goof. If these "fools" learned of Columbo's abilities to solve crimes well, what can I say.
Gena Rowlands appeared in this episode. She is the widow of actor and director John Cassavetes and they were very good friends with Peter Falk off screen. John also appeared in the episode E tude in black.

Finally a murderer who acts like one would react in reality: Realizing what it means to be in prison for the rest of your life or on the electric chair.
Is the electric still used?
@@droceretik Nebraska was the last state to use the electric chair as its sole method of execution and they stopped in 2008. Several states have it as a standby in case their current method of execution is deemed unconstitutional or as an option for inmates on death row.
At the time this episode was made capital punishment in the United States was still ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. In any case it was the San Quentin gas chamber for California executions until 1996 when lethal injection became the standard.
All murderers in real life have an epileptic fit when they're caught?
Yes he is the only one I can remember, that had a good freak out, after being caught ,
This episode is a perfect example of a theme common in many Columbo episodes: new (at the time) technology. I can only imagine later generations rolling their eyes as Oskar Werner’s character explains how his digital wristwatch “prints the numbers.”
Werner, by the way, plays his part to perfection. You can’t help but sympathize with him a little bit as he suddenly (for the first time, perhaps) realizes he’s caught and headed to prison.
+Jack Flash: What is this “Fax Machine” you speak of ?
Jack Flash Not as impressed as watching Lee Grant actually cut strips of magnetic audio tape and splice them together in the analog world’s version of “cut and paste” audio editing. Lol

And this was less than 20 years after the Nazi defeat. The heavy accent, the blond hair, the cold technocratic demeanor, even the German clothing set us up to dislike him from the get-go. My parents are German, so I get to say this.
JimboParadox Take that “reasonable doubt” stuff over to the Perry Mason page, buddy! This is pure cat-and-mouse. Good guys win. Bad guys lose. And, as always, Engl- er, I mean, Columbo prevails! ;P
When Peter Falk spoke, the inflection and tone perfectly portrayed content; one didn't not have to know the language to understand what was conveyed. Falk was so natural, he effortlessly glided between takes. In contrast, most crime shows these days are all about technology and lab analysis for which there's always DNA lying around at the right time to the accompaniment of techno music.
This is one of the best reactions by the killer when Columbo proves he is guilty!
ELIZABETH!!
💯 one of my all time fave reactions. And from the wife too, she was so stunned it was truly a sad moment.
He forgot to say goodbye to his convenient wife. How thoughtless.
Well, being occupied with thoughts of a future appointment in the gas chamber can make a man careless about these things.
@Peter Fitzgerald To be honest, I think that's what happens with a lot of the murder suspects Columbo sends to the DA. "Your evidence for murder is a carnation that isn't on the conductor's lapel?" "You want to convict this woman for murder because you got poison ivy on your hands?" "GTFO of here Columbo! Bring me some real evidence that will convince a jury!"
Peter Fitzgerald what do you mean?
@Peter Fitzgerald but didn't he need the invitation to get into
the art gallery event ????? ......how would he have gotten the invitation ???? Didn't Columbo pick up the invitation from the art gallery???? It can't be on the desk and at the art gallery simultaneously now can it ....it should still be on the desk ...unless the art gallery sent out two invitations ...which they more than likely did not ......
