How amazing how time softens the memory of events and people. Today we can see Kaiser Wilhelm as a regal figure, pleasing to look at in all that silly uniform and helmet and all those absurd bird plumes. We look at WW1 as a time of pride forgetting the suffering. WW2 is perhaps too recent and the ideology of that war is still too toxic. We look back at the 30 Years War and it is the same, fine uniforms and fine generals and beautifully outfitted horses and yet we forget the horror of this and all wars. As American General W.T. Sherman said: "some people think that war is all glory, but I tell you it is all hell."
