I HAVE BEEN COMMENTING ON MANY POLYGLOT VIDEOS INCLUDING STEVE KAUFMAN'S ABOUT TOTAL FAILURE OF CONVENTIONAL METHOD, STORYTELLING AND LINGQ IN GETTING ME TO EVEN BE BASICALLY CONVERSATIONALLY FLUENT. I HAVE WRITTEN TO LINGQ MANY TIMES. I WAS SENT SUGGESTIONS COVERING THREE PAGES. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TO DO FIRST AND WHAT TO EXACTLY DO AFTER ALL THE 13 YEARS OF FAILURE. I HAVE MESSAGES ON THE PHONE OF LINGQ HEADQUARTERS.
WHAT IS THE PROBLEM? I WAS PROMISED AFTER THREE MONTHS WHEN DOING LINGQ I WOULD START TO UNDERSTAND. I WAS MORE THAN DEDICATED EVERY DAY. NOTHING HAPPENED. IT FAILED. THEN AFTER COMPLAINING I WAS SENT THE THREE PAGES THAT ARE CONFUSING.

Ive been studying english since I was in 3rd grade, and to be honest i was never afraid. And thats what helped get fluent in English. Me heavy greek accent still sucks tho

Learn English is really difficult, but I think to myself I don't need to be like a native speaker the most important for it's the person can understand that I want to say, even I make some mistakes when I talk for me if I can say something to the person, and the person understand me for me it's awesome 😎.

About your introduction, the same scenario happens in Morocco in the sense that if you do not speak French at a native or at least native-like level, you're going to be dismissed

Dear Steve, always happy to hear you. Each human being is different and not exist rules, to speaks like a native speakers need talent and hard job; I speak some languages like my mother language because my life was like this. Now I am learning German because I have to move to Switzerland and I am in Bern. German grammar is easy for me but the pronunciations need hard work! Kindly

I absolutely agree with you with that people have too high expectations when it comes to their English skills.
I think people in general, speak good English and it could be more wise to invest to another language and culture already.
After all you get English exposure everywhere, and you probably use the language every now and then anyway.
Btw, there is lot of Ukrainian "polyglots" here in Finland these days, in less than 2 years they can hold fluent conversation in Finnish... that is Finnish language with all the grammar complexity and no relation to another languages if someone didn't get the memo.
Ukrainians can use LingQ free of charge

Cambridge ... the examination board is doing english language learning a massive disservice. I say this as a teacher involved in (having to) preparing students for these exams. Most of my colleagues teach by asking the students to do mock test after mock test after mock test. They can spend half the year in class doing NOTHING but tests and learning little. As someone who prefers to use a non formal grammar but more natural acquisition approach its frustrating seeing students struggle as a result.
Students don't make mistakes, they make competence errors based on where they are on their acquisition journey just a native speaker might also make. Given time and experience of the language the errors diminish. As with natives.

Hi, Steve. I've always wanted to learn many languages and for the passed 2 years I've been learning Japanese in my free time and I am at N5 level. I won't stop listening, reading and (trying) to speak Japanese but I wonder if I should start learning Mandarin now that I can somewhat survive in Japanese. I guess my question is, how do you know when it's time to start learning a new language? What criteria do you think someone should meet in a language before moving on to the next? I mean, as much as I want to become fluent in Japanese, if I wait until that happens I might not get a chance to learn all the languages I want.
English is a bit special, as was said in the beginning - no other language has as many resources available for learning. But that's not all. Speaking as someone who acquired English (I didn't actually study.. thus the phrasing) and using the language professionally (my job is all about talking with people from other parts of the world):
- #1: There's really no need to focus on getting the accent of a native speaker, and that particularly goes for English. English as a language isn't about being able to travel to England and speak the language. English is about international communication first and foremost, and as for myself I do not at all try to get an English accent. That would actually make it more difficult for the people I talk to to understand me. Only a minority of people I speak to in English are actually native speakers. The way I talk is to make it as easy as possible for everybody else to understand me, and believe me - native English dialects aren't particularly easy to understand, for a lot of people. What I do though is to try to avoid letting too much of my native language's accent seep into my English.
- #2: Mistakes etc. English has this particular aspect that it's so full of redundancy. You can make *all* kinds of technical and grammatical mistakes, but the message still comes through. Most people I talk to ( and I too) make lots of mistakes. It does not matter. English is easy that way - if someone can speak just a little bit of English then that person can probably communicate better than you can in that person's native language. "I is go to town". Can't be misunderstood, and that goes for a lot more. Speak a little English, and you can start communicating just fine, and it'll get better, but expect to make mistakes - that's fine, natives do that all the time too.
- #3: Expressing yourself as well as a native speaker: In this, English isn't that different from other languages (except that #2 helps) - of course only a minority of language learners can get truly bilingual, as in being as good in English (or any second language) as in their native language. This is an itch all of us have to stop scratching. But then again - native speakers differ a lot in how well *they* can express themselves. We all know people who can express things much better than we can, in our own native language (and this last sentence is one where I know I could have said it better in English - inside my brain there's another way to say it which doesn't come out and I could probably, but not certainly, say it better in my native language. But what's important is that I found a way to say it and that's all that really matters 🙂)

Steve’s English is excellent, pretty much native level, in my opinion. Stephen Krashen has made the point that a student should not be forced to speak before they are ready, and I think I agree with that. Mindset, as your guest stated, is very important. One role of speaking is to elicit input from native speakers, which the student learns from.

I assume he grew up multilingual, his parents speaking German/Czech, he himself being born in Sweden, he grew up in Montréal (which has French as its primary language). (Details taken from Wikipedia, though he mentioned some of those things a few times)
He has a pretty good pronunciation in German, if I remember correctly with an Austrian-like accent, my guess is that it's for his parents.
@@Ph34rNoB33r but montréal, and even sweden to a lesser extent, are surrounded by english. Nords regularly score among the highest in the world for English language ability.

I'm Brazilian and I was in omegle and I Talked to a guy and, He was talking about minicraft and about one item that he Was going to get, He needed To get twice that item, but he said 2 times instead > twice, So I asked to him, why did you say 2 times and No Twince which is the correct way , he told me , well you are correct but nobody cares about it, in that moment I Felt that , even natives do mistakes and a lot of people struggle and be upset because they try to be perfect and ,it Does not work, sure you have try to don't do mistakes but , you Will Do mistakes.

To anybody who studied English and believes to be accepted or successful you have to sound like a native speaker. Please check out any interview with Henry Kissinger. If you don't know who that is, google him and realize what he achieved still sounding like a German from Fürth.
As a non native who speaks English among other languages, I'd say that you're correct, BUT people should be aware that it doesn't mean that you are fine speaking a completely broken version of English ( or any language ). You should try to speak it as best as you can. Always
What I mean is: even though a non native speaker of language X will probably never speak like a native X speaker, he/she should try to get close to it as best as possible, always. You'll function properly with it long before getting close to native, but it should not be a reason to stop improving it

My doctoral professor on Language adquisition told me It was difficult for me to learn japanese (even english) because I have 39 years old and my mother tonge (Spanish) is very deep-rooted, I also read a lot in Spanish, so It was difficult my brain to learn japanese.
Why do you think? Does my age preventa me from learning other languages such as japanese and english well? Does having my mother tonge deeply rooted, reading a lot It, and not having studied other languages when I was Young prevent me from learning another Language well?

I'm sure Steve Kaufmann will disagree with your professor - he's a bit older than you.. and doesn't seem to have any issues with language learning because of that.
I am way older than you and I'm learning Japanese. It's not easy, been at it for years, but I could have reduced that time if I had started earlier with what I'm doing right now, which is "comprehensible input", lots and lots of it, and the fog is lifting (slowly, but I can understand much more now). As for reading a lot in your native language: That's not a problem. I learned to read when I was five, and I would read several books every single day of my elementary school life, and I never stopped after that either. That does not make it more difficult to learn another language.
Oh, and I didn't really learn English until I was in my thirties.

i think main problem is that english scripit ( roman) which has no rule of pronunciation and writing spelling as no able to read properly what is wriiten in english here but /bat/ put /put/. this makes english very wrost lagauage ..... what do you think

It's not possible to be almost like a native speaker? Surely some people achieve this.
Sure it's possible. For my native language I have met some who could do that (not including children - they easily get to native level).
So, as I said, it's possible. And I have met people who managed to do that. All of TWO OR THREE in all my life. Yes, it's possible. Doesn't mean it's common. Far, far from it.

I think this may be an American society issue. Because as an American learning Spanish and Japanese, I feel the same way the non native English speakers feel about Japanese or Spanish. I feel like if I don't speak perfectly people are going to make fun of me. Meanwhile I'm a native English speaker with horrible skills in English lol.
Let's have a look at criteria of evaluation of IELTS or TOEFL test and then we can ask ourselves: maybe not learners but the governments of English speaking countries have an unrealistic expectations? Thanks, have a good day.

just popping by to say i saw your advert in my feed. Adverts are like a plague, they are an irritant, nauseating and obnoxious.
I really hope she is not teaching them to speak so much with vocal fry.
I like Steves Videos, but that lady is super annoying. The emphasis on the words, the gestures.. Nothing about it feels natural and I would never use her as a good example to learn a language.
