Thought I'd end up having to butcher my old caliper toremove the cable. Of course,Haynes make it sound so simple when they say say just pull the cable free through it's mounting point on the caliper but the reality is anything but. Anyway, thought I'd consult the modern day oracle and see if there was something I was missing, looks like my problems are typical of others with an old Vectra

Bob, yep, no way mine was coming out and there was good chance id break off the lug and ruin everything. Not worth it for the price of a caliper.

Brilliant tip was contemplating how I was going to get the handbrake cable loose .
I was not happy thinking I had to replace the cable as well
    When I first looked
But came off with ease with a hack saw
    Thanx for the tip

Thank you! This tip was exactly what was needed. I had to break caliper same way. Used short impact gun extension and hit it with small ledge and it did the job. Managed to get handbrake cable off in good condition. It was stuck SO bad, like glued and welded same time. I really didn't like the option to replace a cable. Too difficult job to do at parking lot.

@@kevkfz5226 I have a problem on another side it seems that the caliper is not releasing the arm mechanism fully to it's released position. I managed to somewhat fix it with a wire brush and WD40. But it is still sticking a little bit. Handbrake cable is sliding about the same on either side and the other caliper that was still holding was already also sticking a little bit but cleaning it made it work like it should. I'm thinking to put an additional spring to those just in case. When i was fiddling with it i was thinking the same that how can i release the cable without breaking it or the caliper and got an idea to heat it with a small torch so that the plastic will melt a little bit then it should come loose easily. There is still a risk that the cable will go bad but worth a try i think.

Brilliant video, I might sound stupid but how do you feed it back thru the new caliper does it just slide thru and lock into place

Just poke it throught the caliper. The nipple on the cable is much smaller and locks into the arm on the caliper. Just feed it thru.
