Hi, I'm Alexandra Eaton, one of the producers on this video. My partner, Kassie Bracken, and I have spent the past year exploring what works and what doesn't in the decentralized U.S. election system for a four-part series called Stressed Election. In each episode, we visit a state to explore a problem in detail, and then look at how it affects the nation as a whole. Stay tuned for our next episodes - we’re looking at voting laws, voting by mail, voting technology and disinformation.
The only time I ever waited more than 15 minutes was in 2008. Obama won. Huge crowds of minorities voted with me. This is not a real problem in the US.
@Paul Kryder Yes. Voting is compulsory, unless you have a good reason not to (as determined by the AEC) or pay a $20 administrative fee: www.aec.gov.au/Elections/non-voters.htm This is only for federal elections - the individual states make their own rules. Elections are compulsory in every state too I believe, but not in the two territories.
@Cliff Warden LOL one thing is for sure he is so stupid he doesn't realize it's "his" people in charge of those polling stations not those scary Republicans.

The reason so many people are disliking this video is because we(the people who have disliked) all see the extreme level of propaganda that is being pushed via this "report." Don't buy what our mainstream media is feeding you about America - they are ALL lying to ALL OF YOU.
I takes me around 5 Minutes to vote in Germany, yes, maybe a little bit more when you come in rush hours, but never more than 30 Minutes. We are ca. 22000 in town, divided in different districts to vote, my district has around 1000-1500 people, voting is sundays and starts at 0800 and ends at 1800. There are ten tables to sit in secret and vote.
I live in the U.S. Never a line. If I don’t want to drive, walk, bike, swim, or take a rickshaw to my polling place, I can request to vote by mail. (P.S. We’re more than a half-century out of the 1960s.)
In switzerland everyone gets their ballots mailed home without having to register anywhere. Pretty much everyone also votes by mail. I have never even heard of anyone i know actually going to a polling place on voting day.
@@Soff1859 I have lived all over America. Some states (e.g. Colorado) will almost automatically register you when you get a driver's license and then mail you a ballot. Others, like Ohio, are so zealous in their voter registration purges that they just narrowly avoided 'erroneously' purging 40,000 people from their records. In the US, basic human rights are often won or lost at the State level...
@@thomaszhang5437 True I live in a pretty diverse area and it being NY not many people here vote. What they do is they have two voting stations right across from eachother in the neighborhood over. It makes it more confusing on which one to go to. But I still think it's not a total race issue I think there's a few things at play.
Even when we do get to vote, our votes in the presidential election are diluted by the electoral college. Who I vote for president doesn't matter because I don't live in a swing state.
T J Denying voter suppression is an issue in the US today is simply wrong to do. If you’d watched the video, you would know why you were wrong to deny its magnitude.

Well a woman in Atlanta did receive a voter registration for her deceased cat. I’d say Georgia has some concerning issues regarding their voting system.
I myself live in Sandy Springs, and though I do have to say that the percentage of white people here is closer to 60%, that library is 100% in a richer part of town, away from the lower income housing which is generally filled by minorities. I haven't personally seen voting places in the poorer parts of Sandy Springs, but based off of what I've seen in other parts of GA, I would say it is 100% harder for minorities to vote than white people, even in somewhat-democrat Sandy Springs.
He corrected to illegal immigrants, but it's more or less when the state pretends you aren't breaking the law in order to expand their political power.
mend the gap Because Trump appointed his best friend as the Postmaster who then dismantled and slowed down our Postal Service and will refuse to accept mail-in ballots past Nov. 3rd, even if they’re mailed out a week in advance. Oh and they’ll also throw them out

T Bone because you can only have one type of ID not including passport (book and/or card) and they give you paper ID which can not even be used at a real ID at the airport
Think about this: America does not need to see the tax returns of a billionaire who became a public servant America needs to see the tax returns of public servants who becomes millionaires while being public servants.
Not sure why you'd think these are mutually exclusive. America needs to see the tax returns of everyone who runs to become a public servant up to and during the entire time they are a public servant. Full stop. You are a servant. A subordinate of the people. You want public office, your privacy is forfeit. That is how you limit power.
In some parts of the US they have more than one day to vote. Wouldn't be surprised if he purposefully chose the worst time to vote. Heck he didn't even do mail voting so...
Voted on last Tuesday (declared as state public holiday) for local elections - less than 5 mins Thanks India 🇮🇳 Edit : polling booth - less than 1 min away from my home.
Nothing is real anymore. Anyone can say anything and people will assume it's based in truth because people in general are good natured and trusting. Especially if coming from a place of authority, such as a massive media company like the NYT.
I went voting in a local election yesterday, it took 5 min. Walk in, get a paper slip, make a cross, drop it in a box, done. Didn't need a special ID either, just the general one. EU btw
@Rusty Shackleford Project Veritas lost all of their credibility when they deceptively cherry picked and cut the WaPo reporter's words during their whole metoo sting. If voter fraud is so real, how come Trump spent millions of taxpayer dollars on his voter fraud commission and turned up nothing? Source: apnews.com/article/f5f6a73b2af546ee97816bb35e82c18d I know for a fact that mail in voting was active in Oregon during the 2016 election, and yet not a single case of voter fraud was found there, but Trump's own voter fraud commission. Just like how there shouldn't be any restrictions on your constitutional right to own a gun, I don't think there should be any restrictions on your right to vote. For both constitutionally protected rights, we should only ever look at possibly enacting restrictions if people are using their rights to violate others' rights.
@@calebjiang4056 He's talking about the EU, so it'd be weird to apply class concepts like "rich suburbs" to the situation in EU. Regardless, that's been my voting experience too - though sometimes when the turnout is very high, people do have to vote in lines for 1-2hrs (but that doesn't last all day, so you could probably just come back later). Anyway it's not that big of a deal, since election day is always a national holiday. And AFAIK, most countries don't use voting machines or anything like that. Just paper ballots & a pen.
Voting is not difficult in USA either FYI. A lot of celebrity activists who endorse whatever democrat Hollywood tells them too have never voted either. But lord will they tell you how difficult it is.
Pax Aurora OK .. under 18 cannot vote. Where’s their right? Illegals can’t vote yet live here, where’s their right? I’m sure you’ve heard ALL the talking points.. Can’t buy cigs, liquor, drive, etc. I just find it ironic how ID’s are required for ANYTHING but voting. Personally I feel if you don’t pay taxes, you shouldn’t be allowed to vote. Why? Because it will be voting for self interest instead of what’s best for all. Always voting for free stuff that the taxpayer has to pay. Akin to your kids determining what you must pay them in the form of an allowance... Nice to debate without everyone having a smart 4ss attitude, though! The US is about the only country left where you don’t have to prove who you are. 99.9% of all other countries require ID. Why? To prevent voter fraud...
@@badkarma6181 now there’s some good ones in there. however i believe that people under 18 still shouldn’t vote, because they’re supposed to be being educated and maturing enough to formulate their own opinions. kids are suggestible, agreeable, and impulsive, which are three things that don’t belong in a voting booth. illegals too, because they’re not full legal citizens of the country and thus don’t have the same liberties as a legal citizen would. since ID is required for voting, it is mostly law abiding taxpayers who vote, which i agree is a good thing. there will always be outliers of course, but grand scheme there mostly isn’t the issue of people voting for selfish impulses like that. what i find more concerning is the amount of misinformation out there designed to skew the common person’s perspective and shift their vote to one candidate or the other.
Showing ID is not voter suppression. Any state ID would do and everyone has one or they can’t function in our society. What BS. You lost me right there in this video by being dishonest.
Voter ID in and of itself is not suppression, but the people it tends to affect are disproportionally the poor; voter ID is not free and will usually require a bunch of documents that sometimes also cost money. There's also an added cost in some States to go to a specific gouvernement office and some of those offices are only open during the weekday/during work hours. Combine all of these together and what you end up is roughly 11% of Americans not having a government issued photo ID (www.brennancenter.org/sites/default/files/legacy/d/download_file_39242.pdf). So I agree with you that it's not suppression in and of itself, but the government should definitely make better attempts at making getting an ID an easier (if not mandatory) process for citizens. The US lags behind many other developed nations when it comes to that.
Christopher Dang do you actually believe that? I used to be poor, on food stamps, hung out with people on section 8 and food stamps and government assisted living. All of them had an ID or they couldn’t get their benefits. Not many of them were interested in voting though.
IT'S THE STATES RESPONSIBILITY TO PROVIDE ENOUGH VOTING BOOTHS AND LOCATIONS FOR THE NUMBER OF REGISTERED VOTERS IN ANY PARTICULAR AREA. IF IT'S NOT BEING PROVIDED FOR THEN GO AFTER YOUR LOCAL AND STATE OFFICIALS WHOS JOB IT IS TO MAKE SURE IT'S DONE RIGHT !!! BTW I SEE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG WITH A FEDERALLY ISSUED MANDATORY VOTER I.D. CARD !!!
Our voting system is antiquated and an embarrassment when put in the context of what we have achieved technologically. If you are not a felon, have a valid ID, and are a citizen, you should be allowed to vote in under an hour.
@teek75ifty We have the technology to securely do this. We only lack the collective will. Simplicity is a sign of genius. Complexity is the tool of of choice for those not wanting to negate their position of status or control.
@teek75ifty Wow. You must be really unhappy with your life to feel the need to engage in personal character attacks. You know, I've been there before my friend, so I get it. Attack away. I'm more then happy to be the target if it brings some sense of happiness to your day 😉
@Rusty Shackleford Guess we should just keep doing it the same way then. I'm sure it's far to complicated for a nation that has landed vehicles on other planets to figure out how to improve their voting system. And who are these random people suggesting we can do better?? Man, people need to learn to just shut up and not say anything 🙄
@jacob earwood Yeah, it's those "black" people again. Wow, I didn't think it was possible to turn my initial comment into a racial issue. But you found a way 👍
That’s not true. You should really look into this topic. Get into the nifty gritty of it. Do the research. I’d quote stuff now but I want to make sure I’m accurate. I will circle back if you haven’t indicated you’ve looked into it.
Oh Man ! Seriously? What’s going on in those United States? Is it deteriorating into autocracy? Thank you from the rest of the world. Thank you for voting.... for standing in that line for so long!
If you really look at our politics, autocracy isn't a far cry from what has long been established in our government. If you are not a Democrat or a Republican, your chance at getting anywhere in your political career is almost nil (the only exception is Bernie Sanders and once he is gone, there will likely be no independent politicians again). And in case nobody has noticed, even though both sides seem to stand for completely different values, they really are just two sides of the same coin, which is why we are notorious for flipping sides roughly every 8 years, as if going to the other side of the coin will fix things, repeat ad nauseum. Trump has been the only person who has no experience as a politician before becoming president and it shows. But I refuse to accept polls and all of the positive spin on Biden until all is said and done because we were fed the same crap about Hillary, and look what happened there. We are not autocratic yet, but we are definitely duopolistic.

My voting experience in 2016 was 5 hours in Florida. 4 of those hours were the machines not working. I live in the suburbs also. I was only asked for my drivers license and my voter ID. They checked I was registered to vote. I got to the machine and it looked like a 90's giant printer that was falling apart. I was like WTF lol.
In 2012, it took me just under 8 hours to vote in Gwinnett County, just like the Fulton County man at the beginning of the video. In the 2014 and 2016 elections, I drove to the extra white north side of the county and got in and out in under an hour. In 2018, I went back to my local place and waited an hour before other folks in line advised me that disabled people (I need a cane these days) can go to the front of the line. If I had stayed in line where I was, it would have been another couple of hours. I don't see how requiring an ID that is quite literally REQUIRED FOR EVERYTHING in society can be considered voter suppression. It insures VOTE INTEGRITY.
I live in Ireland, it takes me about 20 minutes to vote and always has. (30 minutes including the walk to the voting station). True, Ireland only has the population of a single US state (Just under 5 million, about the same as South Carolina or Alabama) . Still, the entire country votes in one day by pen and paper ballot, and the votes are usually counted 3-4 days after. I can't understand how the US got like this, and frankly it scares me that a system can be so corrupt from a 3rd party perspective and yet so many people inside it seem oblivious.
In Sweden the longest I've waited to vote I think is five minutes. I showed up, didn't understand the line system since there were so few people in line, and wasted three minutes wandering around before I could get going. It took me four minutes to walk there from my house.
Unfortunately, I did not understand why for especially the Black Community voting is so difficult. Why these waiting lines and hours spent to just set a cross? Could somebody please sum it up for me?
Basically closing polling stations in areas with a high black, student and growing minority population, while White suburban area numbers stay the same. PLus also gerrymandering areas so that high black populated areas have their voted count for less
Watching this from another country (Germany) is so surreal. Nobody here even thinks about the possibility of the right to vote beeing surpressed. I recently read that the 2020 election could bring up record numbers of voting, 60 to 70%. 70% is the lowest we ever had here! (highest was >90%). Just the fact that you vote on a tuesday, not sunday.
Witnessed this in Houston, TX. My parent’s has voting at the schools across the street hours waiting in lines. Me in the Lilly white neighborhood I live in is always in and out
@Catoosa Dawg Ha. So, you know our numbers are arabic, right? You know much of US research today is done by non US citizens? That many of the entrepreneurs you idolize are sons and daughters of immigrants? You know most of technology was made by a myriad of different people from different places and improved by other people? You know white people also were "guilty" of the only 2 world wars there has been, a genocide, and most of climate change? And that's not even talking about slave trade, the murders with the discovery of america, and many other things. And I'm white dude.
I live in GA and will vote NO MATTER WHAT!! I plan on showing up with food, drink, chair, book...It's sad that it is this way but change only comes in the U.S when "We the People" change it. I hope that the new BIDEN/HARRIS administration will make Voting Rights one of the first things that they address. #BLUEWAVE
Yes it does. So why didn't they have more polling places open? If the person in charge in the state knew places were going to close down why didn't they go and find a new one? Why did they make laws that disproportionately affect people of color? Sure they say its to prevent voter fraud. But there has been no evidence of fraud to begin with being about .002 percent. That number hasn't changed at all so what was the point of the law? The laws didnt help fight anything and there are plain statistics that say that the laws effect people of color more often. So if they have that information then why do they not repeal these laws? Its almost like the population percentage of color people in one county plays a huge role.
@Cliff Warden first of all that is not what I qas going for at alll here. I was talking about voter suppression. You went a totally different route. It is extremely clear you are a racist. Before you say anything about me being dumb or some kind of sjw. Look up the definition. You are grouping a certain skin color together and have a prejudice a pre conceived notion about them. Saying they are the reasom the area changed.
@Cliff Warden white flight is racist, whites staying in the neighborhood is racist (gentrification). there's nothing you can do right, you should just off yourselves.
Alex. And Kassie: When will the collapse in values and egalitarian behavior reach rock bottom? Why must raw power always be granted a win based on overall failure? Why do Secessionists always get the brass ring?
Wait they are making this a color issue when the guy in begining of video walks up to line he had to wait for 7 hours and there were at least 10 white people right in front of him!
Vote no matter what, and vote for people who you know are least likely to do stuff like this. And tell everyone you think might be interested about it.
The one thing I don't get about America is that states pass laws on federal elections. Shouldn't it be the role of the federal government to make laws on federal elections? In Australia, which has a federal system much like the US, the federal government makes laws on federal elections, and the states on state elections. We also have both a federal and individual state independent election commissions whose jobs is to manage and count the elections as well as update district boundaries. I mean why should it be the job of politicians to decide their own districts?
That's the point. States have the right to regulate and shape its own election processes. However, the US Constitution says that under Article I, Section 4, Clause 1: The Times, Places and Manner of holding Elections for Senators and Representatives, shall be prescribed in each State by the Legislature thereof; but the Congress may at any time by Law make or alter such Regulations, except as to the Places of choosing Senators. So in the next election cycle, voters can and should ask how their representatives will fix the issue.
The guy at the end is awesome, “we can put a Tesla in space but can’t vote.” I love the sentiment but Tesla is run by a genius and our government is ran by a bleached chimpanzee.
It's so weird from India, in our country by law it's required to set up a polling station every 2 Km from every individual's residence. And it's suffice to say we have a huge population.
India has its own set of problems but no one from my family nor I have ever waited more than 30 mins to vote and we literally have a population of a billion. Elections are the basis of a democracy, I did not expect this from the most technologically advanced country in the world

Theoretically, that's a "Sates Rghts" issue. But THAT term has been "reacquired" and repurposed by the GOP to mean that Slave States exercise their "right" to keep brown-skinned peoples from being recognized as citizens, or even human. When it applies to HELPING The People, States Rights is a call for the Feds to overturn the overreach of the Left. When dealing with a completely corrupt evil regime, there is simply NO REASON to attempt to work within the framework of the law or the Constitution. Republicans stopped doing THAT in the Reagan years, and continued the relentless march to full Fascism until the appointment of Obama. THAT was a deliberate choice to rally the racists and fascist, and it worked. We are now a Fascist Oligarchy, and DAYS away from being unable to reverse the process, even if we win and control BOTH Houses and the Executive. With a 6-3 majority and those on the "Right" completely owned by the Republicans and corporate Oligarchs, NOTHING the Dems can do will EVER take effect - the Injustices will simply strike down ANY attempt to return to a Republic. And honor any request to move FURTHER Fascist. And Trump will sim[ply declare the Election as a fraud and sue all the way to the Supremes who will ONCE AGAIN award the election to the loser. THIS MEANS: Abortion rights - gone. Civil Rights - gone. Workman's Compensation - gone. Affordable Health Care, regardless of the Act - gone. Consumer protections, job security, overtime pay, decent public education - gone, gone, gone. You will have the right to buy overpriced insurance. The Insurance Racket will have the right to deny your claim. And you will NOT be able to protest, protestors are arrested for sedition, for DARING to disagree with the Fascists-In-Power-Even-After-A-Loss. And THIS is if we WIN THE WHOLE BALL OF WHACKS. IT IS TIME TO REVOLT As if the GOP wasn't revolting enough.
In 2006 the House & Senate had unanimously authorized section 5 of the Voter’s Protection Act, established to prevent jurisdictions with a history of implementing discriminatory voting practices from making any changes without clearing it federally in advance. The changes that took place over the years to come, along with a divided Supreme Court Decision that overturned this provision is what effectively ended the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Therefore, it timed out/expired in 2017. So, to answer your question, no. This wasn’t an issue back in 2008 or 2012.
I don't live in the US and it's really really hard for me to get my head around the fact that you can so easly prevent people from voting in America. Showing ID is not voter suppression. Any state ID would do and everyone has one or they can’t function in our society. What BS. You lost me right there in this video by being dishonest.
GoTocco thank you! My thoughts exactly.
Watch 8:36. Showing ID is necessary but it still has its problem.

Cliff Warden Fascist Trump supporters. 😂😂Going onto these places really help to boost my self esteem.
@Cliff Warden
What does that have to do with voting places? Trumpism is a plague.
Let the white european community vote for a white president .... period
Wait they are making this a color issue when the guy in begining of video walks up to line he had to wait for 7 hours and there were at least 10 white people right in front of him!
Project Veritas, ilhan omar, enough said...
no, please go on. i'd love to hear more of what you have to say here.
@@ETJeanMachine Cliff Warden 👍
I’m so angry watching this. Someone please tell me what’s the solution?
However, the US Constitution says that under Article I, Section 4, Clause 1:
The Times, Places and Manner of holding Elections for Senators and Representatives, shall be prescribed in each State by the Legislature thereof; but the Congress may at any time by Law make or alter such Regulations, except as to the Places of choosing Senators.
So in the next election cycle, voters can and should ask how their representatives will fix the issue.
Sounds like a constitutional amendment is required
The guy at the end is awesome, “we can put a Tesla in space but can’t vote.”
I love the sentiment but Tesla is run by a genius and our government is ran by a bleached chimpanzee.
It's so weird from India, in our country by law it's required to set up a polling station every 2 Km from every individual's residence. And it's suffice to say we have a huge population.
LMAO NYT was trying to say it was fair a week ago hahaha
Pivot... PIVOT!
Also. I am surprised how in the States of allll places in the world, it seems so difficult to make voting work. That is ridiculous.
India has its own set of problems but no one from my family nor I have ever waited more than 30 mins to vote and we literally have a population of a billion.
Elections are the basis of a democracy, I did not expect this from the most technologically advanced country in the world
I’m not a fan of the 1619 project nor BLM but It really is a crying shame this country had has and will continue to have an unhealthy obsession-paranoia with race due to a legacy of slavery.
They need that argument to keep people separated. The good people out weight the crap humans that look to enslave us.
The whole world hates me based of my skin color even my own people hate each other
This is SO NOT FAIR!!! It MUST change!!!
Yes! Ballot harvesting and the rampant buying of votes MUST stop! Just tell that to Ilhan.

I voted for the first time in Singapore this year, the whole process took less than 10 minutes 😌
I’m so tired of all these idiots blaming Dems or Republicans for US shortcomings. I don’t care if it’s a republican or dem in the White House, I just want Trump out of office. He’s not a good president, America is worse than it’s ever been and people are blaming other citizens for problems with the government. Biden isn’t great but it’s an either or situation and he’s way more competent.
trump is great tho....so what you talking about?
Im confused. Shouldnt the federal governtment make sure ALL the states dont suppress voters???
Keep it up great content.
Idk why people even go voting
You still gonna live the same depressing life no matter who wins
Dam you good bro?
Im glad because anyone who says "Anyone but Trump" shouldnt be able to vote
You're right! He needs our Tax Money to pay off more hookers
So American citizens who disagree with you shouldn’t be able to vote? Gotcha, spoken like a true right wing nutjob
@@jarengeorgecomedy I pay taxes for one reason, my presidents golf trips
#DwightdeVilla No wonder you're so ugly, your heart shows through.
"Freedom"
why dont people just go to voting booths where it isn't busy somewhere else in the city?
There was no problem in 2008 or 2012.....hhhmmmmm
Most interesting right?
In 2006 the House & Senate had unanimously authorized section 5 of the Voter’s Protection Act, established to prevent jurisdictions with a history of implementing discriminatory voting practices from making any changes without clearing it federally in advance. The changes that took place over the years to come, along with a divided Supreme Court Decision that overturned this provision is what effectively ended the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Therefore, it timed out/expired in 2017. So, to answer your question,
no. This wasn’t an issue back in 2008 or 2012.
Imagine waiting 7hrs in line to vote for Joe Biden 🤣🤣
Why would you go to vote for Joe Biden in the first place is beyond me.
You know we wouldn’t exactly have all these long lines if people just took the time to vote by mail
How do we make a loud and clear message to the Dems- Vote flipping in person and vote the Dems out both locally n federally.
Lol this like to dislike ratio is something else. xD
I don't live in the US and it's really really hard for me to get my head around the fact that you can so easly prevent people from voting in America. It's so out of my mind, that you live in America and are a legal citizen and they can tell you, "No, there is a typo in you name here. You cannot vote".
Classic georgia. Sad but not surprising if you live here like some of us unfortunately.
Georgia is a great state.
We need to have the UN here as observers
