I printed a new D-pad for the Jaguar controller. It makes this game, and others easier. I always thought of the Adventure square as a mascot lol. Its my favorite game. Long story, but it ignited my life long love for video games.
Another great one sir.. I have been looking for a good price on this to try to complete my Jag collection.. It is not wroth the asking price but would still like to get it, someday!
I hope you find one. Beware of the chinese knock offs that have been flooding eBay lately. I'm now scared that somebody will pass one off as original. I keep my eyes peeled on eBay and stuff so if I see anything I'll shoot you a message!
So what if it was a Mario Kart rip off, this was an excellent game. I'd like to see a release of it either in the Atari VCS store or a Jaguar mini console
Did I miss it, or did you touch on the split screen? Atari Karts handles split screen very well. It's very impressive for the time. I recommend trying it out if you can. Also, the shoulder buttons on the pro-controller can be used to take corners at speed.
I know about this one. Miracle Designs would go on to make Merlin Racing for the Nuon & from the looks of it, it seems that despite its flaws, it's STILL a better game than Merlin Racing in every way aside from the music.
It was a bit of a looker when it came out. It lacks the MK personality though. I think they rushed it and left out weapons. Even then one can have fun with it. Its ok to me.
I really enjoy Atari Karts. As a racer, it is much better than Super Mario Kart. It does not have the battle mode stuff, so if you love that, Atari Karts will not be as fun for you One thing I like about Atari Karts is all the shortcuts. Most levels have at least a short one, and some of the levels have huge shortcuts. As much as I enjoy this one and as much as I have played it, I have never beat it. The last cup gets to be almost impossible.
@@TheAtariNetwork I've only finished the first cup, and so far I'd say I'm having a very positive experience! I felt the power downs were not that bad, not nearly as miserable as getting stuck on an obstacle, but as long as i can reverse, It's not the worst problem in the world, maybe on a higher difficulty when the race is really close, it could be an issue. But overall, very fun Kart racing game! Also have to point out how killer the graphics are! the 2D sprites look amazing, and animate very smoothly! 4 out of 5 from me!
I've heard that this game is on the Atari 50th anniversary collection. Might have to pick it up some day. I mostly want it for Food Fight. Maybe I'll enjoy Atari Karts? I agree with your selection of characters that could've been in the game. I would've love to play as Charley Chuck. The elf character you play as in Centipede would've also been a great playable character, and Pitfall Harry if Atari gets permission from Activision.
I played this on Evercade Lynx collection. I like it, it's just a decent, sometimes fun, mindless game to play once in a while. I agree with it being a 3 rating.
Yeah it kind of boggles the mind why they didn't think to use anything from their history. They don't have many or possibly any real popular characters but they still had options.
Atari Karts is all about the vibe and getting in the zone, plus it is very psychedelic. But the wall hangs and reverse control power-downs can take you out of the zone. 😂
A Jaguar video that I would like to see that compares Jaguar ports of 16-bit games with their respective 16-bit versions. You'll often find that the Jaguar version will have a higher resolution, far more on-screen colours, and bar a few retail titles all run at 60fps with no slow-down. Power Drive Rally is a game that took advantage of Jaguar's features for the game's graphics, but even the 'lazy ports' are significantly better on the Jaguar. Nba Jam: T.E. is much better on the Jaguar than any of the 16-bit versions. For me, I think it would help to illustrate the Jaguar's abilities and strengths over the big 16-bit systems.
My main gripe with Atari Karts is the obstacles. They take the fun out of the game. The grinding to a halt when veering off the track is also annoying. If ATARI took these issues out of the game, it would be a fun and fast-paced game. It's a nice-looking game for the system. If they removed the gripes and improved the character roster and gameplay, ATARI would have a fun and enjoyable game. The only obstacles should be power-ups used by other drivers. Great review.
The parallax scrolling in the background looks sorta neat at first, but it doesn't make any sense whatsoever. Why isn't the sky moving? That's just weird. It's like this was made by someone with a fundamental misunderstanding about how 3D works compared to 2D side-scrollers.
I'm ok with the rating you gave to Atari Kart, it's a fun game that could been great if they had more time and put more effort into it, I'm happy that you spoke about the flat obstacle, I didn't understand what was happening, so I had to go backward, thanks for the explanation, I play this game on the Atari 50 compilation on Steam but I remember playing it on an emulator a while ago, do you see a difference with the orginal version and the Atari 50 version ?, Thanks for the video Jon !
There was SD-F1 Racer but it was only released in Japan and was never localized for Super Nintendo at least in North America, there was almost a European release but it got canceled.
We did a great interview with Ted Tahquechi about the Jaguar and why the games turned out like they did. It sheds some light on some of this stuff. As far as FPS I have no clue but while playing on my CRT TV at no point did I think the game was running at an unplayable frame rate.

That's awesome about adventure. Do you sell the new dpad? If so where can I go to check it out?
At the time Atari Karts was made, Berzerk was still owned by Stern. The others would have been good choices.

Oh I'll have to check it out. I usually have nobody to play with so I simply forgot to mention two players. I just assumed it was split screen racing.
I know about this one. Miracle Designs would go on to make Merlin Racing for the Nuon & from the looks of it, it seems that despite its flaws, it's STILL a better game than Merlin Racing in every way aside from the music.
Playing the square from Adventure would have been an awesome choice.
Great video as always, 1st place all the way.

The difficulty does ramp up a ton which is funny because in the beginning it's stupid easy
I havent played this game yet, but a Jaguar Game Drive is on its way, so i'll be playing Atari Karts soon!
Let me know what you think of it!
@@TheAtariNetwork will do!

The best racer of all time
Merlin Racing by the same team on the Nuon is considered the spiritual successor to this game
I didn't know that thanks for sharing

I always thought this was just WACKY RACERS re-done for the Jag
One of the too few super scalers made for the Atari Jaguar. I highly recommend it.
I got Atari 50 because it looked interesting.
This game is meh. They could make a new one with Charlie Chuck & Bubsy
That would be pretty wild!
Bubsy, Plok, Croc, and Boogerman!
Looks like a game I would have liked to play. I definitely agree, they could have come up with some better racers
Yeah it kind of boggles the mind why they didn't think to use anything from their history. They don't have many or possibly any real popular characters but they still had options.
If this had projectiles to shoot, and mines to drop I'd be playing this, but therefore super mario kart on snes is my pick

Man as a one time 2600 fanatic, I rooted for Ataris comeback so many times
This game wasn’t good….compared to its competition
I played this for the first time tonight. I regret that I didn't like it.
There was SD-F1 Racer but it was only released in Japan and was never localized for Super Nintendo at least in North America, there was almost a European release but it got canceled.
The tire power-up lets you go off road without slowing down.
Thank you for clearing that up!
I'd take mario kart on snes not 64, over this any day of the week
I can imagine Atari Karts DX being a thing.
Super Mario Kart ran at a steady 60 fps. This struggles to maintain 20 by the looks of it, and on a supposedly much more powerful console.
We did a great interview with Ted Tahquechi about the Jaguar and why the games turned out like they did. It sheds some light on some of this stuff. As far as FPS I have no clue but while playing on my CRT TV at no point did I think the game was running at an unplayable frame rate.
@ralfvanbogaert3451: I had this game back in the 90s. It seemed to run just fine and had far better graphics than Super Mario Kart.
It really needed weapons...
I like this game and I know it sucks
It doesn't suck good sir! It merely blows...
This game is similar to Street Racer.
Street Racer is better but this is pretty good.
