    A new Syntakt track featuring a perfect companion for it: OTO boum.
    This track is a rolling uptempo techno track that is quite crunchy because of a lot of overdrive stages being used. But it's done in a way that the track still sounds quite smooth and clean. Hope you enjoy this one !
    Shall I post more like this?
    This track was completely made with Syntakt. The only post processing was a hint of bus compression, and a limiter (hitting -2db max).

      For the performance aspect for DT, DN, and ST I have something interesting in mind for the courses :). Can’t share yet what exactly but it’s going to be cool I think. Part 2 for syntakt will dive deeper in more complex use of its functions and creating a more complex groove.
      Currently boum is the one I prefer. :)

    hi dave, what do you think of the boum compressor compared to the new AH+FX? which do you prefer?

    • @Davemech
      @Davemech  10 місяців тому +2

      Hey ! Late response. Ehm. I use them in such different ways that it’s difficult to really compare them. The AHFX gives more complete control over the compressor obviously. The OTO Doesn’t have such fine control but it does what is does in a very nice way. I especially like to use it as a parallel processor so that I can use some heavier settings. One cool thing the oto can do that AHFX can’t is negative ratio compression. Which is pretty crazy when fully wet but when dialed in in a subtle way it’s really great.
      So no clear winner I’m afraid. They both have things going for them. I think in terms of vibe I’d choose oto

      Well, it is not a daw, nor a workstation. It’s a synth / drum machine / groovebox.

      @@DavemechIt's a digital system that manages audio and can create full tracks; by definition, it's a DAW. An example of what isn't a DAW would be editing and manipulating tape or vinyl or playing an electro-mechanical or acoustic instrument. greets!

    • @Davemech
      @Davemech  Рік тому +1

      @@MRTM-kl5dda bit too purist for my taste. I’m an instrumentalist myself (guitar, bass guitar, piano, singing) and this is just as much an instrument. It’s not a daw and neighter does it fit the definition of a daw. By that definition any synthesizer with a sequencer would be a daw. Which makes no sense whatsoever. But to each their own :) May I suggest you look into what syntakt actually is and how it works ? It might make it a bit more clear for you what it actually is. Cheerio

    • @MRTM-kl5dd
      @MRTM-kl5dd Рік тому

      @@Davemech Well, that's the point. An analog synthesizer with an analog sequencer is, by definition, not a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation). I know exactly what the Syntakt is, as well as every other Elektron box. Most of them are simply a DAW with sampling and/or a synth engine. And that's a defined term, not a matter of "taste". I also didn't deny that it's an instrument, but it's also a DAW! Greets :)

    • @Davemech
      @Davemech  Рік тому +1

      That’s odd, because Oto boum is not doing that much as it’s subtly blend in and there is no heavy compression on the master. ;) for the mix within syntakt the kick and bass are layers of one another so it’s more a rolling vibe than a “4/4 punch in your chest” thing. That was a creative choice though.

    The Boum 1/4" jacks are unbalanced, correct? I sometimes misunderstand the issues with balanced vs unbalanced, but are you running the output back to an audio interface with balanced ports?

  • @xwife6293
    @xwife6293 16 днів тому

    How are you triggering the sidechain? Are you?
    Nobody has done a video with midi cc triggered sidechain, which would be helpful for syntakt and digtakt owners who don't have separate outputs for the kick. Wondering how that works since the manual is kind of vague.

    • @Davemech
      @Davemech  16 днів тому +1

      That wouldn't be very useful as it would then also compress the kick itself. Especially because there's no seperate output for the kick ;)
      I'm not using sidechain here. Sidechain compression is not a must. It's a nice effect sometimes but it is not necessary to glue a mix. I make sure the tracks sound as good as possible within the grooveboxes and then boum is just a big cherry on top gently saturating and glueing the mix. if you want a side chain effect you can create those with lfos on the DT and with ST we have the FX block that can be used for that with the amp envelope. Digitakt 2 has a routing menu for the comp so there we can do proper SC comp by having the kick bypass the comp. Hope this helped :) cheers

    Great Techno as always Dave! I also learned two things that I hadn't seen mentioned anywhere else, and I did RTFM. 1) You can save and recall to temp storage using the TRK button, I thought you could only use FUNC. 2) You can enter mute mode even if the TRK button is held down, I thought that would take you to Keyboard mode. These two tricks will definitely help with the finger gymnastics. You just convinced me to sign up for your new Syntakt course ;)

    • @Davemech
      @Davemech  Рік тому +2

      Awesome to hear :) !
      Yeah I do use those a lot. One addition though: when you keep holding track and control all some stuff, then press NO it reverts to the state before control all rather than the saved state. Which is cool because that gives us another layer ;)

    • @sgsrules
      @sgsrules Рік тому

      @@Davemech Nice! Thanks for the tip, that will DEFINTELY come in handy. So does FUNC + NO/YES and TRK + NO/YES save to different "locations" so that they can function independently? So you could save to temp with FUNC, then do a bunch of stuff with control all, hit TRK NO revert that state, do some stuff, and then hit FUNC NO to take you back all the way?

    • @Davemech
      @Davemech  Рік тому +2

      @@sgsrules exactly :). TRK + NO only works as long as you keep holding TRK. As soon as you let go you’ve only got func+no left. And we can also copy a pattern. So that gives 3 layers total hehe

    Hi Dave, great sound. I do think the compression is a bit much. You want to stay in the middle of the bottom row lights or less on the OTO Boum.

    • @Davemech
      @Davemech  Рік тому +5

      Don’t look at the lights ;). It’s heavy compression (as I meant to) but it’s only mixed in subtly. When using parallel compression it’s okay to push it. The dry sound is most of what you hear. The wet sound is only there to strengthen the sound basically:)
      When turning the comp beyond 12 o’clock it goes into negative ratio compression and you’ll pretty much always have the bottom row leds completely lid up.

    • @dkamhaji
      @dkamhaji Рік тому +2
