Ethan, you don't need to explain yourself, you are thinking ahead and making the best decisions for your operation that you can. You will learn over time (as I'm sure you already have) that not every decision is the right one but you'll learn so much from every wrong decision. Keep up the great work, your work ethic is awesome and I think you're going to do great in life!!
Congratulations on the new investment. Wanting a 1000 bushel cart for capacity is smart. J&M makes a hydraulic kit for grain carts so you could still put it on the stiger without a pto. Never let that boxcar leave the farm. Your son will enjoy it as much as you do. Many blessings to you, the family, and the farm!!
@@gregjames5070 Yes, but they are also very good dependable tractors. It can still do almost anything in his operation right now and as he gets larger you will still need a tractor that size if most of his others are larger.
The bigger combine was smart . Because you might expand more in the next few years so instead of buying a class 6 machine just to turn around and need a class 8 you skipped the extra cost and hassle. You were thinking ahead now all you need is a 340 magnum and a 1000 bushel cart and send it . A mid sized farm like yours needs to take advantage of a decent priced piece of equipment especially if it's in good condition and larger than what you may need . My family farms on a large scale 8000 plus acres but just 12 years ago we were only 1500 acres. We expanded as us younger guys finished school and got into farming. We grew the farm by picking up land and equipment when a deal came up . Give yourself another couple of years and you will be a large operation through your determination and skill. Great video keep up the good work !
Dad and I were talking about you a couple of weeks back. About how important guys like you are. The next generation of the non-mega farmer. Just how rare you are in this area and how badly we want to see you succeed. We are rooting for you The home town is rooting for you. Keep on making good decisions. Keep working hard. You got this.
I just wanna say that equipment is a GOOD investment. I bought a big air seeder that people really doubted I needed. In two years it has planted several crops worth a lot more than what I paid for the air seeder. Equipment is a necessity, and if you play your cards right, which it seems like you are, it can be a good investment. My latest theory is buy once cry once. Spend decent money when necessary to get exactly what you want. Spending money over and over on the same thing that only takes and never gives us what drives me crazy.
You may be surprised that I actually enjoyed the entire video. You don't have to explain yourself, though it was very interesting to know what you were thinking about the future and the decisions you are facing. I for one followed your thoughts and would have to agree. It is after all, a business, which requires some forethought. I say follow your gut instinct, keep your eyes open and you will be fine. Not sure if you get alot of wind in your area but guys in our area have found that if they have a chopping corn head they need to work the ground lightly right behind the combine because the wind blows all the trash into the fence lines, ditches, and waterways. And the guys that no till in our area found that the chopping corn heads leave a mat of trash of ground that it has a harder time warming up and drying out in the spring so they lightly till it just to warm it up and try to dry it out. Also my father in law runs a 1000 bu dual auger killbros cart on a 7150. I would think your 7140 would handle a 1000 bu cart. Just through a drawbar support kit on it and maybe just slightly turn up the fuel pump.
Young man, I’ve been at this a while now. And it’s bullshit that equipment isn’t a good investment. If you have the right equipment, and can cover the acres faster? You can’t put a price on that. Farming has everything to do with timing, and if you ever get behind? You can’t catch up. We don’t farm for the money,,,, we farm because we love it. It’s not for the meek or the weak.
Agree with you. Equipment doesn’t look good on a balance sheet but when you consider the extra value of getting over all your beans at 13% and getting corn out before it blows over (or whatever else could happen), it really adds a lot more revenue than your financial statements might show. Some years more so than others
@@NWIAFarm what else doesn’t look good in a balance sheet are large expenses on equipment that has no depreciation left. Especially when you have a crop sitting in the field and no way to get it out. Congrats on the new combine. I think buying a bigger grain cart would be a good investment. Look at the time spent dumping the small cart. That costs fuel, less time in the combine means a longer season and a bigger chance for bad weather to ruin your harvest., not mentioning the longer the grain drys out the less money your going to make. From one Hoosier to another, I wish you good luck, and a good harvest every year. I really enjoy your videos.
Ethan that 8230 is a huge step up from the 2388 and the reason when I bought a new combine that I decided to buy a 8240. The 8230 had no problems that I heard of and they was building the 8250 a couple years then and I decided on a new combine so the 8230 was no longer being built. I had the 8240 for four years after a couple years the 8250 came out with the upgrade in technology along with the trade in value of the 8240 and the good crops I had last fall this past summer I decided to trade the 8240 fir a 8250. Like I said the 8230 didn't have any problems that I heard of and I didn't have any problems with my 8240 it was all about getting the upgrade in technology with the 8250 along with a good crops in 2020 with a strong grain market is the reason I traded and I like the 8250 so far so I ham happy I traded. The 8250 is still a class 8 combine and I considered a 9250 which is a class 9 but I have a hard enough time keeping the grain moving out of the combine to the bin with a 8250 I don't need a bigger combine. I hope you enjoy the 8230 as much as I enjoyed the 8240 and 8250. I love my green tractors but when it comes to combines I prefer red.
Your decision to trade combines was a smart decision. It's bigger than the other one but it's not having to work as hard. You probably got a good trade in because after a while they will dollar you to death. You take good care of your equipment and that's a plus. You have a good head on your shoulders. Keep it up.
Appreciate you do explain yourself and I understand your reasoning and the ones that don't understand either don't farm or are this stagnant farm that is not going anywhere and as farmers we have to continue to evolve and grow. Keep it up your doing a wonderful job.

Enjoyed the video, I appreciate your thoughts at the end! Especially about the whole not wanting to be the next 10,000 acre farm and just having enough to be comfortable when/if any kids want to farm with you when they are older.
You are doing a great job to be so young, I love watching your channel and the content you provide. Don’t ever think you can’t do things. Cause you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you. With God all things are possible.
Best of luck with the bigger machine. A wise plant operator told me once, you do small work with a big machine but you cannot cover big work with a small machine . If the trial with the chopping head works out, not only have you upped your capacity when you have the extra help at the weekends but you save a pass with the reel disc, extra fuel chopping , save with reel and time. As you know your operation the best, I am sure, you have have covered the above along with many others when you were making your decision. Speaking of the older gentleman, how is he? Will you be able to let have a go on the new “wheels”? Keep safe over harvest especially when closing the bins when tired👍
Best part was the last ten minutes. Farming is awesome whether it’s 80 acres or 10K...people are proud of their gardens and the produce they get. Growing and feeding people!
Ethan there is no need to explain what u r doing most people that never grew up on a farm does not understand what the American farmer is having to deal with I grew up on a farm in Miss I could not I imagine what we would have to do today to keep farming u keep farming because we need the farmer U r doing One hell of a job Thank U
It is scary to think about, back in the day my grandpa had 9 sections. They did a lot of moving and trading and wheeling and dealing so keeping track of it is kind of hard.....But at some point 3 sections got sold off, and my dad and my uncle each took 3 sections when they started farming. My Dad has the 3 sections paid off so we were able to afford to buy another half a few years ago because the rest of the farm will pay for it, but someone who wants to start out could never afford it. Now me and my brothers will never be able to pay back my Dad for that land, and it would have to be split between us, its unsustainable. We are in Canada so we only get 1 crop a season and we can't grow corn or beans, our income per acre is much lower than corn growers. Land is also cheaper, but up here you need about 1000 acres to make a living, to support a family probably closer to 1500.
Congrats on the new combine, definitely wouldn’t call that a rant. Would love to hear more explanations like that of how you think about farming in the future!
In my view, you have made the correct business decision and it is because the low interest rates have made the cost of capital cheaper than the cost of labor. The time savings generated by having a larger machine are permitting you to do the harvest by yourself instead of hiring labor to help. The cost of the bigger newer combine (purchase price and interest combined) is cheaper than the labor cost that would be necessary if you had a smaller machine. The reduced run time as a result of the extra capacity will also reduce the frequency of repairs and that adds to the savings.
The beauty of American agriculture is that each farmer has the ability to make his own decisions. The test is always whether we're in business 5-10-15-20 years from now. I agree with other comments below, equipment is a good investment. It is a constant investment and a budget item every year. Whether new or used... maintenance means everything.
I'm normally a John Deere guy, but I'm also a track guy, and Steiger has been putting out big 4 track articulated tractors for a long time that can pull the biggest grain carts, thus they have a place on our farms. Case IH / Steiger, whatever they are called today, they are good products also.
Also another piece of helpful advice make sure the def system finished pumping back before turning off the battery disconnect. I dont know if it gets long periods of freezing there like it does in ND but the disconnect got flipped before it finished pumping def back and it froze and cracked the injector and made a mess. And also drain the def tank after the season,it will crush the pickup tube if it freezes. Once again not sure how cold your winters get but just want to pass on the knowledge.
Heck yeah I love the upgrade I been waiting 2 day in suspense lol god bless you man and all the farmers of the world that get out there and get it done with there 2 hands and thanks for the videos catch ya on the next
Your doing a good job of thinking as I see it, planning for the future, using what is given and making the most of it, for me stay the course on how you see it and with what you think is coming at you, Later
Ethan combines are a lot like planters, if you don't get the seed in the ground the best way possible you won't grow the crop and if you don't harvest the crops the best way possible and leave it in the field you can't sell the crop that never makes it in the bin, combines and planters is the best two investments you can make in farm equipment in my opinion, they don't cost you money, they save you money.
Health to drive your new to you combine, it is looking good. Need a new shed too to house it. Perhaps you can get a few custom combining jobs if you get finished off early with your own work. Buying equipment in the good times sustains you during the harder times. Really glad you are having a good year. What is your yield averaging out at this year?
So proud of you for making the right investments and keeping things growing (no pun intended) ..... Sad to see the other combine go, but this big new one looks just as amazing!!!!! Looking forward to seeing you grow and continue to thrive in the fields!!! Much love to you and your family from me .d mine!!! 🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
Funny a year ago this channel was brand new I was one of your first subs you were tighter then a bullfrogs ass today you are out here balling not sure if this is good or not either way I’m glad your making it happen
Neighbor here pulls an 850 cart with an older 2001 year model Deere 8310 fwa with no problems, and those old 8310s are fairly comparable HP and weight wise to your magnum. Hills and flat ground around here. I’d say it could handle an 850 cart no problem.
Up here in northern indiana the farmers are shelling over 300 bushel corn and 100 bushel beans. The stalks that are sticking up is what tears your tires up.
Have you ever thought about planting maybe a acre of O.P. heirloom corn just in case something bad was ever to happen and you couldn't get seed . With that seed you can save your best seed every year to replant . We grow Truckers Favorite that produces really good . Thank you for sharing !
Being in farmer or any other kind of business you are always looking to the future, making decisions taking risks are all part of the game, for a young man you have a very good business out look.
You want scary? We have a few young farmers. That lost 500+ Acres in one year. Solar farms are taking way to many acres of farm land. When they could build on land that can't handle farming.
Agreed, I don’t know where your from but here In Ohio it can be all four seasons in one day, unlike down south in Georgia, Florida area where is is sunny probably 75% of the time? Why not put them on rooftops down there or even on the ground where it at least isn’t good ground.
I started on my own and really have no desire to farm “large” but I want to farm enough to have my own piece of the pie. If I could make a living at 500 acres I think I would be happy there and add a piece or two as they came along in my “network” instead of chasing ground wherever I can get it
If you haven’t seen it yet might want to look into availability of 360 yield center stalk rollers and yield savers for the head. Definitely a good investment if they are available for your model head
Congratulations on the new machine! It's your operation and your decision, you're young and hungry and I think that's what I admire most about you, Good luck with the rest of harvest and all the years to come, congratulations on the new baby! Also I'm curious do you run the bottom sieve all the way open in corn with the new machine?? Works great on the older smaller ones but wasn't sure if you ran this one any differently?
By far my favorite farm channel to watch. I don't think you needed to defend your reasoning for a bigger combine. Sounds like it was a good deal so why wouldn't you upgrade now of the price was right is my thinking as well. Also this combine easier to upgrade, if you found a deal on a 45ft draper she can handle it (not saying you need one). One day you you want a 12 row corn head she can handle it. Allows more flexibility if you pick up more ground. Now if you can only find a full time helper you would really be moving.

We had a JD 7520 that was a workhorse but my favorite tractor was the 4640 with front wheel assist.
Awesome new combine great video keep them coming my buddies just baught a 7120 they love it
Best of luck with the bigger machine.
Congrats on the purchase! Heck of a jump up and rock on with it!!!
I like the talk to really got to me and I’m really happy for you with your new combine and hopefully one day I can be a first gen farmer also
This old Boer (=farmer) is proud of you. Keep it up my friend
Very nice combine hope you have good harvest with your new combine
Congratulations!!! No need to explain your self... Don't listen to the haters!! You are killing it!!
I'm normally a John Deere guy, but I'm also a track guy, and Steiger has been putting out big 4 track articulated tractors for a long time that can pull the biggest grain carts, thus they have a place on our farms. Case IH / Steiger, whatever they are called today, they are good products also.
Dude with corn like that I’d say it’s a good year to make the upgrade. Must be exciting to run that new one!
Keep your passion and never apologize for progress or secuss.
Its hard to imagine you running an old crappy New Holland with a 4 row head. You've come so far that's awesome.
Once again not sure how cold your winters get but just want to pass on the knowledge.
congratulations on new combines and what years is your combines??
I’m happy you bought the combine. It makes for better content and that’s what we are all here for right😂
So inspired to be a farmer love the channel my man, ur killing it out there!! Much love from Northern Indiana.. 🤙
Nice! Huge upgrade. Gonna need a bigger grain cart now!
Evansville, Indiana here .looking good . We plant white corn .
Holy crap you did it that's going to make the rest of harvest really fun! congrats
Here in TN we are completely no till besides the bottoms. It helps immensely with erosion and all that matter left over really helps
Wow ! Looks like a great upgrade to your equipment !!
Man you are an absolute madlad buyin that, with these corn yeilds you are on the yellow btick road to becoming a bto 😂
Funny a year ago this channel was brand new I was one of your first subs you were tighter then a bullfrogs ass today you are out here balling not sure if this is good or not either way I’m glad your making it happen
You should get in touch with #agleader
Neighbor here pulls an 850 cart with an older 2001 year model Deere 8310 fwa with no problems, and those old 8310s are fairly comparable HP and weight wise to your magnum. Hills and flat ground around here. I’d say it could handle an 850 cart no problem.
You should always do what you think is best for you and your family.
Am glad you are growing so fast
I run a 1000bu J&M on my 7140. As long as your on some flat ground it does just fine. If your on some hills, then you have to be patient.
Ethan Congratulations on the new combine u r very deserving to have it an keep the videos coming
So what’s going on with the house?
We need a tour of the new combine.
What a purchase! Congratulations!
Being in farmer or any other kind of business you are always looking to the future, making decisions taking risks are all part of the game, for a young man you have a very good business out look.
You’re a good UA-cam you told the truth about farming
Awesome so happy for you
Was listening to him also while hauling calves
You want scary? We have a few young farmers. That lost 500+ Acres in one year. Solar farms are taking way to many acres of farm land. When they could build on land that can't handle farming.
Agreed, I don’t know where your from but here In Ohio it can be all four seasons in one day, unlike down south in Georgia, Florida area where is is sunny probably 75% of the time? Why not put them on rooftops down there or even on the ground where it at least isn’t good ground.
I started on my own and really have no desire to farm “large” but I want to farm enough to have my own piece of the pie. If I could make a living at 500 acres I think I would be happy there and add a piece or two as they came along in my “network” instead of chasing ground wherever I can get it
It takes around 1000 acres per family.
I think you did a great job buddy, great job
If you haven’t seen it yet might want to look into availability of 360 yield center stalk rollers and yield savers for the head. Definitely a good investment if they are available for your model head
You are doing great! Nice machine
Hey Thanks for sticking with the best combines remember red combines rule
You should sell those hats in the future, they look really good. i would totally buy one
23:33 - yes that makes complete sense!!!
A very nice looking machine. Did you let the mice know they were not welcome in the new one?😂Congratulations, this investment will pay off.
Congratulations on your newest investment. Can’t beat that red equipment
Highly recommend a Demco 650. We pull it with a Case 7220 and its like a match made in heaven
