- Official music video for the single "This Woman's Work" written and produced by British singer Kate Bush.
"This Woman's Work" was released as the second single from Kate's album The Sensual World in 1989 and peaked at 25 in the UK singles chart.
The song was originally featured on the soundtrack of the American film She's Having a Baby (1988).
The music video for "This Woman's Work", was directed by Kate herself and features Tim McInnerny.
This song is very personal and precious to me. Back in 1993 after already having 2 miscarriages, my wife all of a sudden was feeling excruciating pain in her stomach. We hurried to the Hospital ER and she was found to be bleeding internally and she was filled with blood. The ultrasound revealed she had an ectopic pregnancy. As she was taken to O.R. for surgery I was sent to the waiting room as they told me she had lost quite a lot of blood and would need at least 2 blood transfusions. I waited and worried as it seemed for hours. I had already loved Kate Bush and this song for years and so it continued to play in my head over and over and over again as I cried and worried for the life of my dear wife. It really got me through a really tough ordeal. Almost 30 years later (and 3 other high risk pregnancies' resulting in C sections), we have 6 wonderful children ( and 2 grand-daughters). This song still means so much to me and makes me cry almost every time I hear it !!!! Women indeed sacrifice so much in order to bring life into this world.
Your wife is a brave woman.
God bless you and your family. That is God's work, give him thanks,Life is a many splendored thing . God is with you !
@@rn6710 truly brave to go on to have 6 more pregnancies after that!
I’m so glad your wife is ok! My friend lost his sister in 2008 to an ectopic pregnancy 😢
Talk about a strong and powerful Woman.
I'm 16, and my friends laugh at my songs on my ipod, including this one. They don't realise what a sensational woman she was, is. She is an amazing singer, and such an inspiration.
Your friends are idiots

Wise words.
You have good taste.
Algunos como tú y como yo somos seres extraños con una sensibilidad que nos hace especiales, cualquiera con un gran corazón puede enamorarse fácilmente de la música de Kate Bush.
Better than nicki minaj and justin bieber and all that shit. This is real musicccc
I love both Kate's and Maxwell's version of this incredible cut. I dedicate this to my mother who passed away this past Sunday (06-13-2021). RIP, MOM,😔🙏♥️💎🌹.
My condolences.

At 16 I thought Kate Bush was beautiful and had an incredible voice
40 years later I still do
So do I at my age of 57
My mum is 88 this evening in hospital.
Am listening to songs and this moves me again so much
It kind of says it all about my mum
Am waiting to see if my mum comes home again.
Im listening to this song right now at 16 and Im sure in 40 years ill be listening to it as well. her voice is so beautiful :)
I was born to late and missed my chance with her :(
I was 13. Still love her music 45 years later. Recently I've been listening to Anne Briggs, who was recording in the 60s and early 70s. Another unique talent
Me too!!!
I came to this song because of the new Netflix movie titled The Mother.
How amazing and moving this song is. It gives me chills and makes me teary.
Same!
Also in the movie A man called Otto with Tom Hanks
Same!!! I came to this song after watching the Netflix movie!!

Aww same i just finished and i loved the song 🎵
There’s not to many songs that can completely crush this 45 yr old man. My first time hearing it!!!

Joseph Smith Kate Bush, 'crushing the lily in our souls' since 1978.
It’s a special song with the perfect video to compliment.
I love your name, it is very special to me. His work literally saved my life in many ways.
For me, Kate Bush was simply the greatest female artist, ever.
Still is.
When I was 16 she released Wuthering Heights & I adored her & listened to the album obsessively. She inspired me in many ways, as did all the bullies who sang Wow Wow Wow at me in the school corridors…we wear school uniform in Britain, I just ‘unfortunately’ look like her & come from the same home town so we sound alike. I chose to embrace it! She wasn’t a 1 hit strange wonder. Looking alike stopped being an insult when I was in my 20’s & it was cool to like her!
People are strange…not me!
Possibly her finest work...and thats saying something considering Kate is one of the foremost artists of her generation.
I don't think a better song about grief and loss has been written or probably ever will be, anyone who has suffered the loss of a loved one will understand the truth and poignancy of this song. It is a masterpiece.
100 %
First "Running Up That Hill" in Stranger Things, now "This Woman's Work" in A Man Called Otto! Kate Bush is on fire right now! Both are amazing songs.
Also on "Firefly Lane" S1 E10 (43 mins in)
I came for this song righ after watching the move as well! Such a touching moment, the song felt perfect in the scene!
Watch She's Having a Baby with Kevin Bacon. Heart wrenching scene
She always has been. She's a real artist.
Goodness watching the movie now, had to stop the movie and watch this song! Love it!
A Man called Otto, a amazing film and a amazing song!!!
This is THE Kate Bush song for me. Tears every single time. I'm a minute in and struggling to type this. Thank You Kate, you have no idea how much your music helped a little boy in a kids home in the 80s. I'm so glad people are discovering you for the 1st time again😊
Every. Single. Time. Just a perfect song.
Every single time 😢
This is the toughest song I have ever had to have the honor to listen to. Kate, Thank you.
I was in the earthquake in Mexico about a month ago and a school fell down. Lots of little children died, it was awful. I was there helping as a volunteer. I remember arriving there and seeing all the parents trying to find their kids. There was a tree where they put all of the names of the kids they were trying to locate. I remember a father holding a piece of paper with his child’s name. José Eduardo Huerta... Later that night they published a list of names of some of the kids that died in there and that name was in there... For some reason I remember this song playing in my head... I hope all of those little kids rest in peace..
Sad!!! i feel for those parents. Rip
That is so sad.. 😢
@Nanda Valim. You are an amazing person for going and helping out the way you did. I can't imagine how that father felt at that moment when he saw his sons name there. It brings tears to my eyes even now thinking about that horrible tragedy.
❤
Our Flag Means Death S2 Ep3 brought me back here for this song. Tears and goosebumps every time.

I've been on a Kate Bush binge for the last 3 days (since watching that episode) and it's astounding how many men she has brought to tears in the comments.
Listening to this track and crying, don't know why just crying, beautiful
Of all of Kate's songs this hits closest to home. I've sat in the waiting room waiting to hear about my wife. I've also sat besides her during chemo treatments not knowing how things would turn out. I couldn't count the number of times this song ran through my mind. Life is too short to take anyone granted. This song says what I though during those times. I'm blessed that she is still around.
I'm so happy for you mate. There is nothing more precious than the love you have for your partner. I know you will, but keep telling her how much you love her and how precious she is to you. I'm 66 and I do that more than once everyday with my wife. She helped me get through some trying times in my past, especially when I had a heart attack 6 years ago. She's the love of my life and I cherish every minute of the day, knowing that she's right there beside me even when she's not actually there. This year will be our 37th wedding anniversary and our 40th year together and I'm so happy I met her as I'm sure you feel the same about your wife. I wish you and her all the best for the rest of your lives.
Loved this in OFMD!! So beautiful!
What is omfd ? Oh fuck my dick ?
Can't listen to this without SOBBING 😭😭😭 I love Kate so much. She puts into words what I can't find in my own head. Thank goodness for humans like her and her talents that she has shared with us all. 🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡
This song just breaks my heart! She embodies strength and vulnerability in women hood. Men could never…
Thank you Dave Gilmore for discovering such a gem.
SAME 30 years later i still love this song
Apparently we need to thank fans from "A Man Called Otto" and "OFMD" for this tidbit. Kate's streaming numbers for this song were around 35k/day. Early August - to today - those numbers show between 50k and 70k daily, with brief dips to 35k. Kudoes to all fans of really cool cinema.
My wife nearly died during childbirth, this song instantly reduces me to tears, this is pure beauty xxx
I lost my wife, the love of my life, last Oct 18 as she passed away from complications due to alzheimers disease. I am having a tough time " making it go away" I probably never will. I miss you so much !!!
😢So sorry to hear ....Stay strong and always cherish the great memories ❤

My Dad is watching my Mom fade as I type this. I am beside myself, yet I know it's even worse for him. May the memories of good times comfort you in her absence. I'm so sorry you had to go through that. Sending prayers your way, internet stranger.
I had no clue this wasn't a Maxwell original. Shout out to Kate Bush!
She wrote this song.
Same! Wow!
If you watch him perform the live version on MTV Unplugged (the best version from him in my opinion) he talks about Kate Bush before he starts singing. He knows she's the GOAT.
@@evaneleven17 ...and produced it and played piano and directed and starred in the video. Plus she can dance. Wrote most of the songs off her first two albums before she was 15 years old. Signed to EMI records at 16. Almost immediately given full artistic control over her work. EMI didn't mess with Kate Bush.
The one the only original version, sang with passion by the incredible Kate Bush. Stunning!
Kate Bush is an artist in every sense of the word. She is a magnificent performer and it's just a shame that when she rarely does do a show, all the tickets are bought by celebrities before anyone else has a chance to get one. I'd love to see her live. Truly one of a kind.
I got lucky and bought a ticket ten years ago to see her. I am in no way a celebrity. USA Midwest guy here.
This is again - the perfect example - of how genious this woman is. Kate Bush, you are one of my biggest inspirations, from the day I was a little boy. For me it was never a question if a Woman can do everything she likes!! Thank you for all you did - to me, and also to the world.
To all the kids here from Stranger Things, if you thought Running Up that Hill was good, buckle up
💯
Yeah, just wait until they pour through her ENTIRE discography!
Her versatility, varying styles, tonal range, choreography and performance (as a complete package) are still unrivaled today.
Handmaidens tale, the hanging scene !!! Intense and gripping TV 📺

I'm loving the fact people are finally realising how good the bush was
What a beautiful woman and artist. She amazingly combined alternative music, dance and theater and made it “cool” during my teenage years. This comment section does her talent and artistry justice and it gives me extreme hope for humanity.
Peace and love ❤️
She's amazing
The thing I love about Kate is her ability to pull you in her songs and make you feel emotions. She’s an incredible artist and a big inspiration. Such a beautiful singer and songwriter
The most beautiful song ever written and sung by the most beautiful voice ❤
How is it a video from (to date) 33years ago, be so timeless & still so fresh? Absolute chills listening. I grew up with Kate Bush's music and it genuinely fills my heart that new generations continue to discover her music and incredible talent. This is, undoubtedly, her most underrated song. ✨✨✨
Hi Melanie
We were just at a Kate Bush tribute concert in Belfast last weekend and they performed this song for a former band member who died in a car crash two years ago. We were bawling our eyes for them and also thinking about our own losses in the last few years.
😞😓
So sad you made me cry, it's rare for me
Here from Our Flag Means Death and omfg… i am crying my soul out.
The thing about Kate is that she brings her rhythm of original creations of music and words to an eternal soul level. Others recreate absolutely beautifully, but they can't raise the hairs on your body like like Kate's voice does. ❤
The last 6 months have been hell for me. Emotions in general take so much energy for me. I've been trying to cry all night to let the sadness out, but nothing would come. It finally happened listening to this. Thank you Kate, for expressing the emotions I can't feel
stay safe❤️

She is just amazing . This song will never get old . If your 60 or 16 this song will touch you

This is clearly the best song ever written. Her performance and production just make it possibly the best song period. It is hard to describe the emotional power of this song.
What a melody... this song touches my soul deeply!
Great Choice
Guv Waylo thanks! not for everybody's taste
There is nothing that Kate Bush cannot do, some are born with a life gift, Kate has such a gift and we have been gifted as well x
GO FOR YOUR MAN STEDE ❤️❤️❤️❤️
❤
Peaked at no. 25 in the charts, I really don't think most people understand her music, far more interested in catchy tunes and lyrics rather than any sort of depth to the music. It's a shame but it is what it is, her catalogue of music is breathtaking, it just gets better and better with time, it will be listened to many years from now with equal reverence as it is today. Many, many number ones will be long forgotten having faded away into obscurity having had their short moment in the limelight.
The album was number 2
Amazing artist! Following her since 1986 and still learning from her!
Thank you my teachers you and Benjamin Moss New York & England
me too.
giacomo castellano Think same. Following since '78.
Someone told me maxwells version was better - it is not ! Kate bush QUEEN
To be completely fair, and as a K8T fan since 79 where this goddess is concerned I am not always fair. It does depend on which version they were referring to. Was it The Sensual World or the Directors Cut version? If it was the later then I would agree with them. In the DC version of this song she completely gutted it of the heart and soul destroying beauty of the SW, this, version. It was the one song I wish she had not touched.
Oh and the great K8T is not a queen she is a GODDESS.
@@Dermacrosis My favourite track off Directors Cut was "Lily". Most of the others I prefer the originals.
Man I grew up to Maxwells version... today is the first day I found out tht there was an actual original version of the song...they are both a masterpiece I didn't realize it was about someone dieing.... thought it was about a break up...either way this song will forever be a classic
My God this always cuts deep. This is an actor from many 90s UK romcoms. Kate did a sing Don’t Give Up with Peter Gabriel which has that power behind it.
What I love most about Kate Bush is her empathy. She feels so strong that we can feel it through her songs.
This song has always made me cry, even now 😭 Still does to this very day 😢 Kate Ur an angel
Ahoy, pirates! ❤🏴☠
I have heard this many times and still I am taken back by it's beauty
Kate Bush’s legacy will be like of the great painters from yesteryear. Her music captivates people. The Uk is truly blessed to have produced one of the greatest artists.
She is classy & there is a sense of mystique about her that keeps people coming back to her music from around the world.
This is written and sang so beautifully.
Talayne Edwards Her "Moments Of Pleasure" is just as touching. Kate pays tribute to family and colleagues in music who have passed on 'Here come the hills of time'.
Since Firefly Lane , i'm adicted to this song. I listen everyday! 😭😭😭💔❤

Me too. It’s literally breaking my heart.
From some of the comments below, I pin the blame solely on Maxwell for not forcefully noting that he is - to date - one of 37 covers of Kate's original work. Yes, you may think he did it 'better'. But, if that were the case there would be no 'covers' - since nobody would cover a second rate song. In a sense this is a compliment to Kate's talents. If she didn't create it, fans of all those covers wouldn't be on Kate's site.
hi, Our Flag Means Death fans. I too was brought here.
What is our flag means death
@@mandysymons2142 (i cannot tell if sarcasm over text so here is honest answer) a show currently airing on HBO Max about a bunch of queer pirates that used this song super effectively and emotionally in the new season that just premiered. i see a lot of comments here about "OFMD" which is the acronym/shortening of "Our Flag Means Death"
😭❤️
Used to think that Kate's R.U.T.H. and "This Woman's Work" were the only songs covered by other artists. These two have many covers all by themselves. Got a surprise today when I stumbled upon spotify's list for her other covers. There are a minimum of 38 other songs by her that have at least one cover (list had 127 covers - some from this year). Kate's output over the years is over 100 published works. Our muse is raking in the royalties.
Used in a very touching moment in the tom hanks film a man called otto, the legend that is kate bush being delivered to a new generation and they like us should treasure it and keep it alive
Before Madonna, before ga ga there was Kate Bush and still is 💙
our flag means death fans anyone ?
There is a legend about a bird which sings just once in its life, more sweetly than any other creature on the face of the earth. From the moment it leaves the nest it searches for a thorn tree, and does not rest until it has found one. Then, singing among the savage branches, it impales itself upon the longest, sharpest spine. And, dying, it rises above its own agony to outcarol the lark and the nightingale. One superlative song, existence the price. But the whole world stills to listen, and God in His heaven smiles. For the best is only bought at the cost of great pain… Or so says the legend.
― Colleen McCullough, The Thorn Birds
The bird that flies the entirety of its life... 😭😭😭 Thank you for leaving the quote here I will now impale myself thank you
The original... and best. Sublime.
Speaking strictly about this video, it seems to me at the very end the nurse delivers the news that his wife is going to make it. She has a soft smile on her face, and the man has a look of astonished relief, after spending the entire video being sure she was going to die. I think it ties in with the lyrics as well, as my feeling is that Kate's song tells us that this woman still has work left to do, and will do it. What do you think?
Watch “She’s having a baby”..
Who’s here because of Our Flag Means Death 😅
no. That's the last thing that would bring me here. To listen to Kate Bush singing did.
I must admit that i cannot express in good english how much i adore, appreciate and admire Kate and her music throughout the years. He compositions are a feast to listen to, as is her voice. Please continue, please!
Ahoy mateys
Should have been a Number 1 in the UK, easily one of her best and having Kevin Darling from Blackadder in the video was momentous. Kate Bush is one of he best acts we have ever had in the UK, she deserved far more chart toppers than she got.
The sensual world album was n°2.
@@isobeljames1328 Yes beaten to number 1 by Erasure, yes really! shows what poor sense of taste we have in the UK when Erasure beat Kate Bush to number 1.

I found it grandma the song that we last listened to together outside in the porch that one of the neighbors were playing. You were talking to me about grandpa and how this song made you remember him. I heard the words to the song in one of my dreams and I woke up to look it up and I found it!!! I miss you grandma and I know grandpa is with you and you both are looking after me and my family!!!!
This is pure emotion and Kate at her very best. I’ve tried listening to Maxwell but his Falsetto is hard to listen too and the busier & louder music saps all the emotion out of this beautiful song.
@mrburgess1698 To me, his cheese and sleaze R&B inflections make him sound like he's just trying weasel his way back into someone's panties. Doesn't have the innocence and sincerity of Kate's.
Absolutely agree. I had no idea who maxwell is but thought I’d give it a listen. Bloody awful - Whingy, whiny and over-complicated. He murdered a beautiful song. I had to come and listen to Kate to soothe my poor, tortured ears 🎶 ❤
