What does Allen Millyard's workshop look like?

- Allen Millyard is behind some of the wackiest bike creations, including his award-winning ‘Flying Millyard’, which is powered by a gigantic, 5.0-litre V-twin engine designed for an aeroplane. It resembles a two-wheeled Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and was magically created in his suburban garage in Berkshire.
Editor of Classic Motorcycle Mechanics, Bertie Simmonds, went to visit Allen's home to find out how he got started, view some of his creations and find out how he accomplishes everything without the use of a huge industrial workshop.

When alan,s time comes the national motorcycle museum should buy this entire garage and set it up as an example of what can be achieved with such rudimentary tools
12 months L8R, I second your motion!
Yup, it would be held in the same reverence as Scott's hut in the Antarctic !
I agree
Such an unassuming nice bloke, and an absolute genius!!
Allan is a national treasure!
the post office once was
Hey buddy, we luv Allen across the pond too! 🇺🇸 🇬🇧
I have been doing metal work since I was 12, I’m 73 now and the things this fellow makes and does is AMAZING. Genius
Could you weld crankcases together, without any welding equipment? Strange there isnt a single video of him building the space shuttle with a hammer and chisel.......................lol
Allen Millyard, showing shed-dwellers everywhere how it can be done. What an inspiration.
It may be small workshop but the results that come out of are out of this world.
What a top bloke.
A dying breed, we should concentrate on training more youngsters to carry the magic on.
My father was a tool maker and taught me "theirs no such thing as carnt" we made many things in our little garage and Ive lived by those words.
I think the real garage is between his ears :) The guy is awesome 😎
Thats the most important garage 👍
Allen is a "master craftsman" and knows how to get things done with what he has.
The man is a legend
Genuinely love Alan, met him briefly once a couple of years ago and he was so nice, humble but has an unbelievable talent, people like him deserve to do well in life. Top man… go Alan 👍👍👍👍
I watch Allan all the time he is a legend and Genius he should be Knighted 👍😊
Genius, simple as that.
I made over 40 pieces of furniture ( sold all of them) in a garage with only a 8” table saw and a drill press along with various hand tools. Firmly believe in less is more theory .
But Allen is a genius besides a skilled mechanic and few people posses those qualities.
A true Craftsman without a massive engineering workshop loaded with many expensive machinery.
I'm well pleased with this
Just perfect
Allen is a true craftsman.
I was there at that Staffordshire show - I remember speaking to him about what he was doing. He kindly helped my friend measure a barrel he’d bought.
some man for one man.genius mechanic.
Having known Allen for some 25 years I am sure that garage is a reference to mine.
Welding those crankcases together is a highly skilled job! Even more skillful, without a pretty substantial TIG set, and a largish oven for pre-heat and post cooling! A miracle worker indeed!
I think Allen uses his Weber barbecue for pre-heating his welding jobs.
ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC, JUST SHOWS ITS THE SKILL OF ALLANS HANDS 🙌 & BRAIN 🧠 RATHER THAN THE MACHINES . ALSO WHY MOST MOTORSPORT ENGINEERS AS FROM GREAT BRITAIN 🇬🇧
Good old Allen !!! 👍 💯
Love the guy and he’s a genius.
You need to do more videos! People like Allen, ahem me… doing their own channels of restoring or modifying bikes. Get videos of the guys in your mag, restoring their bikes. It’d be an awesome addition to the magazine! And!!! A money maker 😜😜
Allen and i should team up, we both have a hacksaw😁
A genius and modest with that.
My workshop is about the same size, with the same machines. All I lack is the ability to get my arse in gear and get on with the job.
Legend !
He always gets there in end...usually with one of Tracy's cupcakes in his belly.
love it, I enjoy my little shop a lot. some of my best work has been done in a two car garage at my home. worked in big shops my whole life and my best is in my shed. I did a little college but have learned more about mechanics and engineering from actual hands on work
An amazingly bright young chap! 👍🤠🥳
Coolness Galore
My workshop is a similar size. No real engineer wants a posh new toolkit, as you suggest, because then you would have to modify, and adjust them all to do what you want. The first lathes, mills, and power tools had to be made from basic tools, they didn't just appear.
In 60 years of engineering, I learned to avoid people who had new, clean expensive, and unused tool kits. They try to compensate for their lack of ability with complex tools.
The more you understand a discipline, the less complex equipment you need to carry it out. This applies to mechanical, electronic, software, and all engineering.
Allen's most valuable attribute is that he is well grounded.
Wot no cupcakes?😁
Muffins!
After years of small or no workshop space I now have too much room… but I can just my more machines now!
Genius. No other word.
A genuinely top bloke
A genius..so interesting to se his bikes..and garage!!!!
Imagine what this guy could do with a large workshop. We'd already have been to mars!
Just goes to show what hand skill is capable of. Its all about practise practise practise. Ive worked with some experienced trademen when i was an apprentice whos handskills shock me to this day, and that was close to 20years ago.
This man is all about attitude.....
I was told, by my team leader your a fitter, make it fit!
WOW !
I'm amazed his wife allows a bike in the lounge/dining room!
A house is not a house without a bike in the lounge and a dog on your lap.
It’s not a bike it’s a artful masterpiece!
One day his hacksaw will be auctioned off. No other hacksaw was used so regularly to build engines.
Great garage, reminds me of my grandads garage, small, everything has it's place and achieved alot in a small space. I expect a lot of this expertise will be lost in the UK in a few decades as this generation leave the earth. I am a little younger than Alan, my secondary school had all the best gear, lathes and drills really big high quality British made machinery. Never got to use it, I think by then it was deemed too dangerous to use. No chance of finding this stuff in a secondary school now. Schools need to bring back some of this stuff, boys would have an interest in it if you could get them off their phones and computers.
you need to put out content we want to see these things. thank you !
Salute to you SIRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
Could you imagine what this guy could do with a CNC And some room.
3:36 - Charlie Weaver¡! 😂
A TRUE BACK STREET HERO 🤣🤣🤣
Not a computer in sight 😂. Just skill.
Had a chat with him at a show many years ago pleasant chap made his son a mountain bike with a gearbox so the gears never got covered I. Mud he can make anything engineering genius
Genius
Blimey someone needs to explain to that interviewer how to interview people. He just keeps interrupting him.
Is that by any chance an Elliott Omnimill? If so I have the same lathe as you (Colchester Bantam) and milling machine. :)
At 2:19 he said he had a decent vice. Well, actually, he doesn't - it is a very ordinary plain vice. What Allen owns in his tiny workshop is nothing much. What he has in skills is amazing. More than makes up for lack of equipment.
Allen, Allen, will you be my dad ?😂
Bro really is just a brit in a shed
Actually I'll bet you he outgrew his second shed and... 🙂
"a bad blacksmith blames his tools"
Allen can make a nuclear reactor in a closet.
Basically he’s as tight as a ducks
Yaaa ratchet end ring spanners! Too posh to use a regular ratchet like us peons are ya Alan?
Very clever man 😊
A certified genius and I use that word very strongly that can build great motorcycles in an area the size of a prison cell 🏍️🛵 he just shows you you don't have to have fancy lathes and all kinds of tools to build great motorcycles are vehicles in that case and actually there's two shows he has a great wife that sure can bake some great baked goods
