The navy jets used in this film were: “F-14 Tomcat” - hero planes “A-4 Skyhawk” - Topgun instructors “F-5 Tiger” - stand in for MiG-28s There’s no such thing as a MiG-28 in real life. All of the MiGs are odd numbers. There is a MiG-29, but it was not used in this film. MiGs are flown by Russians, but also many eastern block (former Soviet) countries like Ukraine. The enemy was never identified by nationality in this film (on purpose) as this was released during the height of the Cold War. They are merely referred to as “the enemy” to keep it ambiguous. The fact that they are flying MiGs kind of gives you an idea of who it might be though. The F-14D “Super Tomcat”, the last variant of the fighter was retired a number of years ago; it was replaced by the F-18E/F Super Hornet. The F-16 “Fighting Falcon” (also called the Viper) is an Air Force fighter that is still very much in service. But it was never used in the Navy, and is not capable of a carrier landing. The most modern (5th generation) fighter jets we have are the F-22 “Raptor” (Air Force), and the F-35 “Lightning II” (Joint Strike Fighter). The 3 different variants of the F-35 are all meant to eventually replace older aircraft. The F-35A will replace the Air Force F-16, the F-35B (which is capable of short take-off/vertical landing) will replace the Marine Corps AV8B-Harrier II, and the F-35C (which is capable of carrier take off and landing) will replace the older Navy F-18C. Side note: I am a retired Air Force MSgt, who was once an enlisted personnel manager at the Air Force Test Pilot School at Edwards AFB California. Every pilot at the school grew up watching this movie and for half of them this movie was the reason they became a fighter pilot (and later test pilot). This is true for all of the Naval exchange students AND the Air Force pilots as well (even though it’s a Navy movie).
@@whitenoisereacts By the way, if you’re interested in some of the less realistic aspects of the film (from a legal perspective), this is a pretty funny and mostly accurate breakdown of all of the laws being broken in this movie, lol. ua-cam.com/video/sTx_qZL3tqM/v-deo.html Or, if you’re into the more technical aspects, here are some actual fighter pilots take on everything right and wrong with the film. ua-cam.com/video/0z0UjYJiLmQ/v-deo.html
All modern fighter pilots will point out all the inaccuracies of this movie... but then say it's still awesome and inspired them to be pilots. What a classic. I can't wait to see Top Gun 2.
And then the non-fighter-pilots will point to the most realistic part of the film (the flat spin, which has only one VERY MINOR problem with it) and bitch about it being bullshit.
There is a flight instructor from the real life TOPGUN school that claimed that any student that would quote the movie in class would automatically be fined 5$ every time they did it. The movie is ingrained into their culture, but they take it so seriously they don't want it quoted constantly.
1975 - 1989 was a watershed moment, renaissance, in cinema history. Blockbusters that set the tone and are still unmatched now. Jaws, Halloween, Star Wars, Terminator, Predator, Back To the Future, Alien, Indiana Jones, Exorcist.... and dozens more that ARE THE FABRIC OF society even to this day.

The back of my house was 10 miles outside Miramar Air Station and I was able to watch dozens of maneuvers a week and several air shows from the pool slide. What you see in this movie is real. You mentioned the color settings several times and while I am sure they did touch-ups, San Diego sunsets look very much like what you see in the movie. All the scenes were shot around San Diego, the mountains, the marina, the streets, Miramar and the ocean... all in the San Diego area. Thank you for doing this Reaction! SO happy to come across it this morning. Made my day! Glad you loved it as I do.
Being in mira mesa when i was young was fun! Tony Scott adjusting the goldens & oranges makes all the difference in this, although SoCal in general already has more gold than other parts of the country.
I had a classmate from San Diego and his home snapshots used to always look like postcards. I always used to joke and tell him that it wasn’t a real place. It looked way to pretty to be real. Lol!!
Growing up in the 80's, movies like this were AMAZING for boys. Because of this we had fighter jet posters on our walls, we had fighter jet video games, toy fighter jets, and we had movies like this and Iron Eagle. I even had a few books growing up that were like encyclopedias for fighter jets of the time.
DUDE, YES!! THIS IS MY DAD'S FAVORITE MOVIE! It's also the first Tom Cruise movie I saw growing up It was a box office success making $360 million dollars ($798 million dollars today) against a $15 million dollar budget. It took home the Oscar for Best Original Song. Next Friday, him and I are going to go see Top Gun Maverick.
@@jannathompson2262 Hell yeah it’s good, I saw the original 3 times in the theater when it was released in 1986, it was top grossing film of that year. The soundtrack is also amazing and Berlin’s song, “Take My Breath Away” was the one that won the Oscar that year. I see now you meant Top Gun: Maverick which is also amazing and the top grossing film of 2022. I saw that one more than 3x last year, as I’m sure you have by now.
This is part of the reason why the US military would become involved in these 80s movies and allow them to film actual military locations and equipment. Great propaganda and recruitment tools.
Top Gun was that movie we used to show off new home sound systems w subwoofers. :) It's wild to me that you're just seeing it for the first time. I saw it in the theater & then, obviously, on VHS/DVD/BluRay later. It was huge & really helped make Tom Cruise a mega star. I saw the sequel today & it was a great sequel, all that you want it to be... fun, loud, outstanding flying, egos, call-backs to the first movie w/o just rehashing.
As kids my brother really had no interest in joining the military. Then this movie came out, 2 years later he joined the navy. Not only did he serve his 4 years, but stayed and is now a retired Navy Chief.
Vil Kilmer is awesome. He plays lead singer of the Doors Jim Morrison in the Doors. He is the hot shot in the movie Willow. He is Doc Holliday in the western Tombstone. Unfortunately Val Kilmer doesn’t act anymore. He has throat cancer which has made it almost impossible for him to speak. He did do a documentary on Amazon Prime called Val about his acting career.
My family and I are big fans of Tom Cruise. As a matter of fact the only movie I watch are Tom Cruise movies. I have watched his movies repeatedly on Prime video. My favorites are Top Gun, A Few Good Men, MI’s.
Risky Business (1983) is a Tom Cruise movie I would recommend. It's the leading role in a movie that got him really noticed. Regarding Val Kilmer, before Top Gun, he was in a good little movie called "Real Genius" in 1985. Also, he was really good in Tombstone (1993), in a co-starring role, playing Doc Holliday.
Netflix has documentary on Val Kilmer made by him and his son, his story is very interesting and with the sequel premiering this week I recommend giving Val some love.
That whole Ice Man taking too long is valid. If this was combat, the more time he wastes trying to hit one jet in a bad angle, the more likely another jet will come around and take out Maverick his Wing Man.
I'm a San Diego native, born in 83 and this movie was literally my entire childhood lol. Ive seen this more times than I could ever count and I love every minute.
And you can see why people were so excited about Top Gun: Maverick finally coming out decades later involving Goose's son. Definitely something you should also check out.
This is like a 90s movie in the 80s. Pretty boys with "attitudes" doing "extreme" things (including macking on their teacher) to a pop/rock soundtrack. It's a precursor to all the Michael Bay movies that came out a decade later and went at the speed of sound. At least they didn't completely ruin this with CGI. All the effects were practically done, so I have to give the movie that.
Interesting point, especially with this film. This ‘cool’ factor is exactly what Bay loves and likes to entertain his audiences with that kind of element.
Tom cruise said he wasn't going to make top gun 2 maverick without Val Kilmer. They have been friends all these years thays so nice. I hope Tom and the actor who played " goose" are friends too.

29:17 Mav and Goose drifted into jet wash, which means that their engine intakes were sucking in exhaust instead of oxygen, which led to their flameout.

Even though Top Gun is all cheese, the line about Maverick ordering “hemlock” at the airport bar is like arthouse cinema levels of cleverness compared to a typical blockbuster. Someone was writing their ass off for that throwaway line.
8:03 Fun fact: You guys may or may not already know this, but the Penny Benjamin Goose mentions is Maverick’s love interest in the sequel, Top Gun: Maverick.
Perfect timing on this as I’m going to see Maverick later today, so this was a perfect refresher! It pumped me up even more! I’m glad you too enjoyed the movie while still getting the message behind it.
I went to the air force base this was filmed at in San Diego and got to see the officers bar where they sang. There is a pretty large air craft museum there for public access, which I absolutely loved the experiencing.
My brother used to fly Tornadoes, which I always thought was the coolest thing ever. Especially when people misunderstood and thought I meant the natural disaster 🤣🤣🤣🤣
One of the reasons I became a USN fighter pilot. Did not get the chance to take up the Tomcat but I did fly the F/A-18 which is used in the second movie out in theater's now for over 10 years.
Crazy thing is that these ultra cool F14 Tomcats wouldn't stand a chance against an F22. The F22 would shoot the F14 out of the sky before the F14 even knew what shot it. Technology advances over the past 40 years have been amazing.

I feel like Maverick really portrayes an overconfident child in many ways in this movie. He is talented, good-looking and everything always went right for him that way. Until it didn't, and he experienced true personal loss for the first time. It's almost like he thought it would never happen. Like a child who is so sure of himself, that there is nothing that can harm him.

Saw this in cinema when it first came out and absolutely loved it. Then saw Top Gun: Maverick in cinema - absolutely fantastic to a fantastic original film. And Tom Cruise at 60 is still damn fine and an amazing actor.
They were using F-16s at the time, but not on aircraft carriers, for those they had the F-18 Tomcats, which they're flying in this movie. For the carriers you need planes that are designed to be able to take off and land on them. As for the MiGs, a lot of countries had them. In fact, there was an incident 3 years after this movie, in which two US Tomcats took out two MiGs from Libya.
From what I understand if the behind the scenes for the second film, they literally made the actors learn how to fly actual jet fighters and film themselves doing everything for the scenes, and got a CARRIER!! that’s some serious dedication to realism. god I love these films

Glad you guys noticed the coloring of the film. Thats a trademark of the director Tony Scott(brother of Ridley Scott). Some of his other top films to check out are Beverly Hills cop 2, Days of thunder also with Tom Cruise(a must see), Spy Game, Man on fire, Domino, De ja vu.
I heard that after this film, applications to the US Navy went up 500%. And some of those applicants who actually joined the Navy worked on Top Gun: Maverick. That would be so amazing, getting to work on the sequel of the film that impacted your life in such a huge way.
You guys are the only reactors who focused on the iconic volleyball scene and I say rightly so. That is the F-14 Tomcat debuted in the 1960s and served until the 2000s. Nowadays, the navy uses the F-18 Hornet/Super Hornet. The fighter jet 'Mig-28' is actually an F-5 Freedom Fighter/Tiger from the 70s which was later updated in the 80s, renamed the F-20 Tigershark.
I think I was 13 when I saw this film in the theatre with my friends. Picture a bunch of girls walking around afterward, saying, "I feel the need... the need for speed!" Lol. And I can confirm we all paid a LOT of attention to that volleyball scene. 😁😉 (Heeheee)
Although the Navy still has Block III Super Hornets on the production line and currently plans to upgrade Block II planes to Block III through 2033, F-35Bs were flown off the U.S.S. Essex starting in July of 2018 and the Vinson now has a squadron of F-35s since August of 2021 as well as Super-Hornets.
Growing up in the 1980s like I did, you don't skip out on what this film meant to the culture. Months earlier, there was a film of similar content called Iron Eagle (loosely based on true events) that had spawned 3 sequels. But Top Gun would eventually outrun, outgross and overshadow that film. Cruise as an leading man on his A-game with a great supporting cast. The late, great director Tony Scott (brother of Ridley Scott) with one of his first blockbusters features. Everybody wanted to be a fighter pilot after seeing this and the impact on recruitment was unbelievable. No.1 film of 1986, soundtrack goes platinum and the song "Take My Breath Away" by Berlin won an Oscar & Golden Globe for Best Original Song. Top Gun is a video-game franchise. 18 games, each on various systems. The final game was Top Gun:Hard Lock on PS3 and it was so fun. Top Gun was in limited re-release for IMAX theatres only in 2013 and it was just as good the second time. Top Gun:Maverick will be available on Paramount plus around late summer and you'll definitely love that one.
What a COOL Review! I saw this movie more than 250 times, it's My favorite movie of all time. I'm SO glad yo see new generations apreciate the COOLEST movies of the 80s.
This movie came out when I was born, my father was in the navy and had the soundtrack. I started listening too it at 5, OH I ROCKED OUT in my room like MJ black and white. I wasn't 20 until I finally saw the film.
Around 22:07 you mentioned being reckless and then talked about music. This reminded me of the fact that the heavy metal band Judas Priest was approached to have their song "Reckless" in Top Gun since the movie producers thought that it fit the underlying themes. But the band declined since they would lose all rights, couldn't have the song on their album and thought that the movie wouldn't do well. Their album did sell over a million copies anyway but later on they talked about regretting the choice.
OK now you guys have to watch Hot Shots. Just kidding, you don't have to. But it's a great movie and I strongly suggest you watch it. It's a parody of (mostly) this movie.
The bit where Maverick & Charlie are in the lift was done after & both Tom & Kelly were working on other films. She had dyed her hair, hence the baseball cap. I think I read somewhere that US Navy weren’t keen straight away, but eventually came around. There is scope for a 3rd, but it would have to be a prequel to show Maverick’s dad, possibly Maverick & Goose’s early times.
A movie made before Karaoke, CGI and streaming. I think I went back to the theater 20 times, because back then, you had to wait about a year for movies you loved to come out on home videos....uphill....both ways.
One of the lost stories from this movie is that Art Scholl, the pilot who filmed the spin used in the fictional goose's death died while filming the scheme when his Pitts S-2 camera plane failed to recover from the spin.

So to answer the question you might have on what the "hard deck" is and why they failed in that first fight. The hard deck is a set altitude that represents the ground here it was at 10,000 feet so when Mavrick dove down past that 10,000 mark and locked onto "Jester" what he really did was dive straight into the ground in the simulation. Doesn't matter if your in a F-14 a F-18 or a Cessna do something like that and swan dive into the ground and you just killed yourself instantly. The ground is just as deadly as any missile the enemy can fire at us.

Hey man, this is super cool. I do also want to say, thank you for your service brother!! I love hearing this sort of trivia
@@whitenoisereacts By the way, if you’re interested in some of the less realistic aspects of the film (from a legal perspective), this is a pretty funny and mostly accurate breakdown of all of the laws being broken in this movie, lol. ua-cam.com/video/sTx_qZL3tqM/v-deo.html
Or, if you’re into the more technical aspects, here are some actual fighter pilots take on everything right and wrong with the film. ua-cam.com/video/0z0UjYJiLmQ/v-deo.html
The F-16 was used by the Navy as aggressors (In the actual Top Gun schools) simulating enemy aircraft. Look up F-16N.
@@christianjadot4459 I stand corrected. And actually as you say that, I think I knew that and just forgot about it. Weren’t they painted camo blue? 🤔

All modern fighter pilots will point out all the inaccuracies of this movie... but then say it's still awesome and inspired them to be pilots. What a classic. I can't wait to see Top Gun 2.
I'm a pilot because of this movie, not a fighter pilot though.
That’s fair!! But still…gotta love it!
Negative ghost rider, the pattern is full 😜
It would be impossible for me to not say “I feel the need…the need for speed!”
Isn't it also rumored that the Navy shoots you out of the sky if you start singing "Danger Zone" or "Take My Breath Away" in the cockpit?
1975 - 1989 was a watershed moment, renaissance, in cinema history. Blockbusters that set the tone and are still unmatched now. Jaws, Halloween, Star Wars, Terminator, Predator, Back To the Future, Alien, Indiana Jones, Exorcist.... and dozens more that ARE THE FABRIC OF society even to this day.
I really hope we are going into a little Tom Cruise reaction adventure from you guys, would really love to see that... All the way from his more dramatic movies like "A Few Good Men", to his action movies series like "Mission Impossible" to even his more Si-Fi ones like "Edge of Tomorrow" and "War of the Worlds"... Hopefully you guys can react to some of those that you haven't seen.
Days of thunder. A movie in the spirit of Top gun.

You left out one of his very early ones. Legend.

Thanks for making the old man be feelin the 80s cool again through y'all eyes. Great balls of Fire
@@MG-jv7pe Yes! I was in Tierrasanta.
Wow! I'm jealous! They sounds so cool!
I had a classmate from San Diego and his home snapshots used to always look like postcards. I always used to joke and tell him that it wasn’t a real place. It looked way to pretty to be real. Lol!!
Tony Scott liked to film during the golden hour, 30 minutes after sunrise and 30 minutes before sunset
They were pretty amazing for us girls too lol Especially the volleyball scene😅
DUDE, YES!!
THIS IS MY DAD'S FAVORITE MOVIE!
It's also the first Tom Cruise movie I saw growing up
It was a box office success making $360 million dollars ($798 million dollars today) against a $15 million dollar budget.
It took home the Oscar for Best Original Song.
Next Friday, him and I are going to go see Top Gun Maverick.
Well? Was it good?
@@jannathompson2262 Hell yeah it’s good, I saw the original 3 times in the theater when it was released in 1986, it was top grossing film of that year. The soundtrack is also amazing and Berlin’s song, “Take My Breath Away” was the one that won the Oscar that year. I see now you meant Top Gun: Maverick which is also amazing and the top grossing film of 2022. I saw that one more than 3x last year, as I’m sure you have by now.
@@goldenshark3182 Yeah I saw Maverick and didn't like it. Top Gun was so much better;)
@@jannathompson2262 Top Gun Maverick actually seemed to get to better to me on repeat viewings, it holds up really well.
The Navy itself says that recruitment rates skyrocketed after the film's release, rising a ridiculous 500%.
This is part of the reason why the US military would become involved in these 80s movies and allow them to film actual military locations and equipment. Great propaganda and recruitment tools.
Charlie’s “older man” was the real life Viper and Top Gun instructor Pete Pettigrew 😊
“We weren’t below 10,000 ft for more than a few seconds.” In other words we only briefly crashed into the ground.
😂😂
My family and I are big fans of Tom Cruise. As a matter of fact the only movie I watch are Tom Cruise movies. I have watched his movies repeatedly on Prime video. My favorites are Top Gun, A Few Good Men, MI’s.
Yes!!!
I live VAL...Great movie!!!
"Weird fighting without fighting". Perfect way to explain the Cold War.
Haha like a staring contest
More like it's an 80s movie that's imitated by the 90s.
Ninetailedbrush: I feel like he could get Goose into serious trouble.
Me: 😬😟😭
Top Gun practically defined a summer blockbuster. Great film.

They fixed that problem with later versions of the F-14. I don't think any military jet has this problem anymore.
That is the reason that both commercial and Military aircraft takeoff is staggered, in order to give the jet wash from the engines and the vortex off the tips of the Wings time to dissipate
@@arnoldsherrill2585 US military jets can take the jet wash now because of the F-14 fatal crashes. However, its not good for performance and maintenance.
Oh thanks, I never understood that. Or what a “flat spin” is.
Even though Top Gun is all cheese, the line about Maverick ordering “hemlock” at the airport bar is like arthouse cinema levels of cleverness compared to a typical blockbuster. Someone was writing their ass off for that throwaway line.
That’s true lol
So much quotable lines that was referenced by later movies from this !
8:03 Fun fact: You guys may or may not already know this, but the Penny Benjamin Goose mentions is Maverick’s love interest in the sequel, Top Gun: Maverick.
I appreciate the quality discussion you both have post-movie. A lot of reaction videos are not genuine. Thank you for keeping it real.
I appreciated seeing the names of the real pilots
Perfect timing on this as I’m going to see Maverick later today, so this was a perfect refresher! It pumped me up even more! I’m glad you too enjoyed the movie while still getting the message behind it.
Top Gun Maverick should only be seen on the big screen 👍🏻😎 imax if you can. It’s so freaking amazing!
We got a nice big computer monitor so don’t you worry
I went to the air force base this was filmed at in San Diego and got to see the officers bar where they sang. There is a pretty large air craft museum there for public access, which I absolutely loved the experiencing.
When they filmed this, it was the Naval Air Station Miramar, now it is the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. There is no Air Force Base in San Diego.
My brother used to fly Tornadoes, which I always thought was the coolest thing ever. Especially when people misunderstood and thought I meant the natural disaster 🤣🤣🤣🤣
That coloring is natural, i live in san diego the sunsets are like that .
One of the reasons I became a USN fighter pilot. Did not get the chance to take up the Tomcat but I did fly the F/A-18 which is used in the second movie out in theater's now for over 10 years.
"They don't stop all the way" You hit the burners as you land on the carrier in case you don't snag a wire or have to bolter.
Y'all need to watch A Few Good Men. It is another great Tom Cruise Navy movie!
They actually power up upon landing in case they miss the cable they can take off again, otherwise they’d go off the edge of the carrier.
Hard deck simulates the ground level, so going below that is the same as crashing your plane.
Viper was played by Tom Skerritt who also played Dallas in Alien - another amazing film.
Crazy thing is that these ultra cool F14 Tomcats wouldn't stand a chance against an F22. The F22 would shoot the F14 out of the sky before the F14 even knew what shot it. Technology advances over the past 40 years have been amazing.
My fiancé served on the USS Enterprise (the ship in the film). They had a room on the ship dedicated to playing this movie 24 hours a day. Fun fact!
That awesome!!!

Thank you for really enjoying the movies and not making fun of them. That’s why I love your reactions😊
03:13 "it's not our's" hey dear americans. That's an F5 with an comunist looking paintscheme. But it's an F5 designed for the USAF (and in that movie flown by USN aviators)and mostly flown as jet trainer by USAF, USN and NATO partners
A great film reaction, you guys! Always glad to see what you think of the classics! If you haven’t already, I’d love to see your guys’ reaction to Tombstone (1993)! I think you’d enjoy it. It’s also got a star-studded cast. It stars Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, Sam Elliott, Bill Paxton, Michael Biehn, and many others you’ll probably recognize!
One of my favorite Tom Cruise movies is Far and Away. He plays an Irish immigrant to the USA during the western era when people were moving out west.
It does this old heart good to see younger generations "get" this movie.

@@whitenoisereacts even better!
It’s been a while since I saw this. I forgot how much foreshadowing they did re: Goose’s death
They didn't use any blur effect. it was the jet exhaust and natural heat.
From what I understand if the behind the scenes for the second film, they literally made the actors learn how to fly actual jet fighters and film themselves doing everything for the scenes, and got a CARRIER!! that’s some serious dedication to realism. god I love these films
No actors flew any Navy jets. They were in the back seat. They were put through the rigors of high G maneuvers, but they did not pilot the F-18s. Ever
@@davidchairez31 oh that’s a shame, thought they did. my mistake

I was 2 when this came out but loved it when I first watched it at 11. Bring on the sequel.
At this point I think the guy that brings him coffee is in on it

Goose dying was absolutely heartbreaking as a little kid
Around 22:07 you mentioned being reckless and then talked about music. This reminded me of the fact that the heavy metal band Judas Priest was approached to have their song "Reckless" in Top Gun since the movie producers thought that it fit the underlying themes. But the band declined since they would lose all rights, couldn't have the song on their album and thought that the movie wouldn't do well. Their album did sell over a million copies anyway but later on they talked about regretting the choice.
Great content! Saw this movie when I was 4 and it was on repeat. It’s the reason I became a pilot when I became an adult. Subscribed sonnnn

They DO have to.
The bit where Maverick & Charlie are in the lift was done after & both Tom & Kelly were working on other films. She had dyed her hair, hence the baseball cap. I think I read somewhere that US Navy weren’t keen straight away, but eventually came around.

It’s so annoying to me when they get mad at Maverick for breaking the rules when the instructor is basically hiding in what represents the ground.
Yeah, can’t shoot someone flying underground!
