For instance, in the sentence of Anders I quoted above, "what" and "which" would both be replaced by "that" by a native English speaker. Anders not using "that" in either of these contexts implies that has native German does not use "das" but instead "was" and "welchem" (I think that's the word?), respectively. So ironically, if you are trying to learn a language (we're assuming English is your first language), it can be useful to hear native speakers of your target language... speaking English. If something sounds wrong when they're trying to speak English, you can safely assume that it is the right way to say it in the language you are studying.
