    I'm just now looking into doing videography as either a hobby or a side-career. Im still in nursing school but this video honestly was what sent me over the edge of just dreaming about making art like this to wanting to seriously do it. I will be a nurse but I am passionate about music and film and capturing moments and emotions like this and making something so beautiful out of them. Until I finish school I can only afford to do my research on how to get started but I want advice from you above all else. What do you recommend I purchase as far as cameras and editing software whenever I have the funds? Eventually if I am successful I will purchase whatever you used, I saved the comments to my phone so I won't forget the names :) but as a starting camera and editing program, what is affordable and practical for someone like me to purchase starting out?

    I've been looking at the Canon XF100 and the Canon XA20.
    1. Would you recommend 10x or 20x lens zoom?
    2. Also would you prefer MPEG 2 or MPEG 4? Does it matter?

    • @LoveUniqueStudios
      @LoveUniqueStudios  10 років тому

      We use Canon 5D Mark 3's. But when you buy a DSLR you need to invest in a few other things which makes it get expensive fast. The XF100 is going to probably be the more professional camera, but they are both poor when it comes to low light like at a wedding reception but I would get the XF100. They also have a "digital" look then if you went with a DSLR like the Canon 60D or the new 70D that has auto focus. Lens are expensive but a very key part of getting good looking footage. If you are a nubi then any camera is better than nothing and I don't recommend dropping $5K on gear if you are new. If you are serious and want to make this a career I would rent a Canon 70D with the 18-135mm from BorrowLenses for a week and see if it's a fit for you. 10X or 20X zoom should be the main thing you are looking at in a camera. You should be looking at (which one is better in low light, does one have XLR inputs over the other to capture audio etc.) We record our audio using a Zoom H1 and a lapel mic so we don't need XLR's on our cameras. It's cheaper and actually sounds better then if you try to transmit a signal from the mic on the person over the airwaves and into your camera. I'm not sure what you gonna use the camera for but if it's for Weddings I would recommend Ray Roman's course on CreativeLive to get a solid look at how to film weddings. Mpeg 2 is mainly for creating DVD's and Mpeg4 is for posting online. They are two completely different formats. When I export my final project I export it as a Mpeg 4 and a 5 min highlight film is around 300-500mb in size. We edit on Final Cut Pro X, but it's just a tool so it doesn't matter what software you edit on as long as you like it. If you are going to get FCPX then purchase Larry Jordan's videos on how to learn how to use the software.

  • @benduke7947
    @benduke7947 9 років тому +1

    Amazing! Question if you have the time... audio, how did you get it so crisp from their mic's? Where they directly fed into your camera or audio recording devices, or did they have some kind of soundboard you tapped into? I'm planning to shoot for a friend's wedding this fall, and their ceremony likely won't have a PA system, so I'm looking for recommendations. Thanks! And again, great video.

    • @LoveUniqueStudios
      @LoveUniqueStudios  9 років тому +2

      If they won't have a PA you need to buy at least two Olympus recorders. They range from $120-$175. The main difference is some you can adjust the recording levels in increments of 1 or some have only 3 settings to change the recording level. Mine has a Low Medium and High and I just set it to Low and add Gain to the audio in post production. Then use the best Lapel money can buy. Plan on spending about $100 minimum but our mics are the Sanken Cos-11's which are $400 mics. They sound rich and amazing. Get a cheap old-school leather cellphone case that has a clip on it so it can be clipped on the back of the female speakers dress and hide the cable under her arm and under the front of her dress and then use Rycote stickies to stick to their dress. Easy to do once you've done it a few times. Do the same for male speakers but tape the lapel under their collar and put the recorder in their coat pocket.
      If they do have a PA you can use a three way xlr splitter from Monster cable and a Zoom H5 or H6. Both are great. And get a 6ft XLR cable. We do both because usually the DJ sound is not very good.

    Hi Shakewell, this is the only 11-min wedding video that I actually enjoyed watching every second of it. Can i ask you some questions?
    1. Did you use a Neutral Density filter for the outdoor on high noon wedding shots?
    2. From 3:35 to 4:10, did you use any color correction or straight out of the camera?
    3. The focus is spot on for a 60D. did you use an external LCD monitor to help with the focusing? I have a 70D and still have focusing problem.
    Thanks.

    • @LoveUniqueStudios
      @LoveUniqueStudios  10 років тому +1

      Hi Tuk, thank you for the kind words on my film. No ND filter was used. If I use one it's only for the ceremony. My ND filters don't allow you to use the lens hood so it's a trade off. There is color correction but the lens flares are real. I color correct all my shots with FCPX. We use a "LCD Magnifier" eyepiece that magnetically sticks to the monitor. They cost about $20 on Amazon.com. We also have Magic Lantern installed on all our cameras to help us with focus. They don't have ML for the 70D yet unfortunately. Best of luck, Jesse

    Bloody awesome mate! what frames do you guys shoot in? I shoot with a cannon 7d and my frames are always choppy don't know how to stop the footage from skipping & lagging. any advice would be awesome.

    • @LoveUniqueStudios
      @LoveUniqueStudios  9 років тому +3

      Noah Lealaogata Noah, we shoot at 24p and 60p. You need to keep you shutter speed as close to double your frame rate as possible. So if your frame rate is 60P then you need to be at 125 shutter. If your at 24P then your shutter is 50. You can not change the shutter to anything else. Only change ISO and aperture to correct exposure.

    good stuff but this could not have been shot during a single 4 hr. standard wedding unless you have a crew of 3-4 people? if so nice work!

    • @LoveUniqueStudios
      @LoveUniqueStudios  10 років тому

      We never only film just 4 hours. They are not the kind of client we'd want to work with because you can't possibly make a good film in that short amount of time. This was shot all in one day with just me and one other cinematographer, no assistant. If we had a third videographer it would have been even better. There were moments I wish I had a third. We were hired from 12-10pm.

    Incredible video! It was amazingly shot! Only one question though the still motion moments with everyone being frozen and the camera moved through them... How was it done? Was it through software such as Adobe Premiere or were they trully standing frozen for that particular take?

    • @orioncreativearts
      @orioncreativearts 9 років тому

      You need the guests to freeze like 10-15 seconds to shot it.

    • @BlackLegMJ

      I saw one guy using Adobe After Effect with one shot, multiple scenes with the same people. It's far more complicated. Probably you will need green screen, long dolly shot.. and the list goes on ;P

    Hello, Shakewell Studios, did you only use the 16-35mm 2.8 for the entire film?

    • @LoveUniqueStudios
      @LoveUniqueStudios  10 років тому

      We used the 16-35mm for the Glidecam and slider shots. You can also use the Tokina 11-16 for Crop Sensor cameras like the Canon 60D or 70D. We mainly use the Canon 70-200's, 50mm Sigma Art Lens, 24-105 and the 100mm Macro.

    • @leondrodelsol6797
      @leondrodelsol6797 10 років тому

      Great work! I own a Mark 3 with a Canon 24-105 lens, and I'm currently searching to expand my business with better lenses; with that said, considering a budget of two thousand, which lenses do you recommend? I'm searching for glass that will allow me to produce great photos and videos.

    • @LoveUniqueStudios
      @LoveUniqueStudios  10 років тому

      If you are shooting weddings you need a 70-200 canon mark 1 2.8 IS.. Buy it used. U also need a wide if you are doing weddings like a 16-35mm If you are into all kinds of filming a Canon 50 1.4 is a great start. My fav lens are the 16-35mm, Sigma Art 35 and 50, 24-70mm mark 2 and the 70-200. Sigma Art is by far the best glass for the price but they only have two out right now. I rec renting glass from a site like borrowlenses.com and see what you like. If you are into film then a nice 50mm Art lens would be a good purchase.

      Thank you Courtney! It appears that you can't purchase this song from TheMusicBed anymore. They must of signed to a new and bigger label.
