I loved my Home Ec class in grade 7 & 8 and learned so much. My two younger sisters did not take it and 45 years later, they both regretted it. The school stopped offering the class 4 years after I left. Your students will remember you and the skills you cough them for the rest of their lives and appreciate you for many many years to come, especially with all the wonderful UA-cam videos you do. Great job teacher. You deserve 10 stars!⭐️
Back in the day we did sewing in our Home Economics Class. So sad to see schools doing away with Home Ec, Cosmology, Drafting, Welding, etc. So thankful for folks like you sharing your skills with everyone! 😊
Yes, these skills need to be returned to schools. I loved home ec. But I wasn't allowed to take the small engines class. Boys only 😢 My sister and I did laundry, dusted, vacuumed, waxed floors, canned foods, etc. Our brother? He took out the trash and mowed the yard. He ended up teaching himself to cook and did well at it, but his other skills were lacking. He was born in 55, sis, and I was younger.
You’re a wonderful teacher and your room is a great example of your dedication to your art. The students will forever remember the lessons and organizational skills, too. Bravo!!
I am amazed. Never saw such a cool room in all my life. I was in school learning about sewing and other skills in an “off” year between high school and commercial college in the seventies last century and we had pedal driven sewing machines. What a machines and facilities you have. We had to buy our own pattern and fabric before we started this class for the first project. I really am blown away. I just retired and started to do sewing for fun in the same year you made this video. It is my new hobby and I am a student, but hey “ never too old etc.“ 😅 Thanks for your tour and guidance in many a sewing project for me. Greetings from Fryslân, North Europe from Marian❤😊❤
Catherine, I am wildly jealous. In my "home ec" classes of more than 50 years ago we made stuff that no kid would ever dream of wearing. So motivation was really low, and girls took home ec just because every girl took home ec every year. I can't even imagine being able to make a bathing suit. And even the simple projects like pencil cases are something a kid will actually use. And those of us who had already learned how to sew at home, like me, would whiz through the assignments and then just have to sit there while everyone got caught up. So what most girls learned was that sewing was useless, unless we already had learned how to love to sew at home.
Wow! What a fun tour! Those students are incredibly blessed to have such an amazing classroom AND instructor! I imagine that the skills they learn will be used throughout their lives. Thank you for all that you do for students and for your UA-cam audience! I have learned tons from you!
You are so lucky to have a vocation that you love so much. Your students will never forget you. I binge watch your vids. Your classroom is phenomenal! Thank you for all that you do❣️❣️❣️
This video brought back so many memories. My mother was a Home Economics teacher. That's what the class was called in the US and was more than just sewing. It also included cooking, table etiquette and home decorating. I was fortunate to help her with her classes from lesson plans to actually helping out in the classroom. I went to a different school so it was an added advantage for me. Your classroom is just amazing and I'm so sorry that we no longer teach any of these type of classes. Thanks for another great video and bringing back some amazing memories.
I remember checking out the Home Ec/Fashion classroom organization and “materials/stuff” flow through the classroom to learn about how to handle my science labs. There just isn’t enough appreciation for how much “stuff” and multi-tasking that this subject teacher is responsible for. Hats off to you!
Wow that is an awesome sewing classroom. Organised in a way where everything has its place, easy to access and see at glance with all the labels. Wish I had a school like that when I was growing up. Keep up the beautiful work Catherine.
This is the class I always wanted. I'm 58 and I had to teach my sewing instructor at 14 how to sew and cut out patterns. My mom and grandma taught me a lot , but having a class like yours was my dream. Thank you for sharing with me and so many other people like me who had to learn what they could from our parents and grandparents, and the best with what we could figure out or read thank you.
Hi Michal, sorry I missed replying to your comment until now. It's a shame that it so often happens that a skilled sewing teacher can't be found and so someone just has to try their best to fill in. Your instructor was lucky to have you, and hopefully you learned a lot along the way!
Oh, my! I would love to have had you as a teacher! The room is so well laid out. You are so organized & efficient! You make me jealous! Thank you so much for sharing your space with us!
Heaven to have such a well stocked classroom. We had to buy our own fabric and queue to use a sewing machine. Our teacher did the cutting of our fabric as there weren't a lot of scissors but to be fair that was around 60 years ago. I love your classroom.
Wow, just wow. Your students are soooo lucky. When I was in school in Kamloops BC, sewing was called home economics. I took courses from grade 8 through 12. I was extreemly fortunate to also have textiles, tailoring and advanced tailoring. To this day I do all my own sewing and for others as well, from coats to purses you name it, I will try anything. Your passion really shines through and your students will never forget the gift you have given them.
Thanks for the kind words, Cathy. Your home ec sewing classes sound like they were very high level! I didn't learn any tailoring until I got to fashion school.
Wow! I would think that I had died and gone to heaven in there. For another scrap project for your fleece scraps, you can make glasses cases out of fleece. A rectangle of fleece, if you want to add some decorative stitching or trim add that first. Next, hem the top , about a half inch using a zigzag or other wide stitch, maybe something decorative. What you want is to catch the raw edge in the stitch. You then add a short strip of hook and loop tape just below the hem stitching. The strips don’t have to go all the way across the top, just enough to keep the glasses in safely. Then with right sides together, folded on the long edge (the hook and loop strips will be on the outside, sew down the long edge and across the bottom with a narrow seam allowance, then turn right side out. Great for eye glasses, and sunglasses. Make the size you need for different glasses. They make great gifts.
OMG !!!!!!!!!!!!! Your Fashion Classroom is MAGNIFICENT. We didn't have anything even remotely close to this when I was in school. My teacher taught us so much. We made a suit, lined with bound button holes out of a light weight wool and I thought I was something when I finished that thing. I think back to those days while remembering all the things she taught us and realize that almost everything I learned about sewing I learned from her. Thank you Mrs. Boyd.
Simply astonishing! Not just the amazing classroom and supplies, but as a former teacher, I know how much time it takes to plan and prep and organize (and seam rip 😁)
All I can say is amazing! I wish more schools had sewing and fashion classes. I took Home Economics my sophomore year. That included the basics of sewing, cooking, household finances/economics, childcare and cleaning. Of course that was in the mid to late '70's. Most schools in the USA today don't have these classes anymore. Such a shame. I enjoyed this tour of your classroom. I love your sewing videos.
I’ve been watching your channel for a good while now. I just found this one and I just want to say, l hope you have been recognized as teacher of the year … many times! I wish I could come and take your class. I am self taught and would have been so happy as a kid to have such an awesome class and teacher. Wow… you are so busy. ❤ Diann
Wow! Your classroom is amazing and so organized. I think your students are lucky to have such beautiful machines and a teacher who obviously loves her job. I wish I had that available when I took 'Home Economics' in the old days.
I have a home sewing room that has everything labelled as I do so many different design projects like sewing, decoupage, collage, furniture painting and on and on lol.....I have to label or I will just drive myself crazy. I love your organisation, it makes so much sense to me and I NEVER throw stuff away unless I really cannot make something from it! Thanks for the tour you are an awesome teacher I would have loved to have had you as my teacher as you are wonderful and very passionate!
You‘re a wunderful teacher and I would be happy to learn from you. It is so helpful watching all of your videos and enjoy every single one. For me is two lesson in one - first sewing, second learning English 😊 for a German girl. Maybe it is possible to Show on you viedos, how to make this adorabel fashionwall? I think will be really helpful sewing fashion instead of only clothes😍
Fabulous set up as you aknowledged to the previous teacher. My high school (US) experience in 4 yrs of home economics d id not come close to what your program accomplishes. It would be wonderful to be your student . Thanks
Wish I were a teenager again! I’m self-taught, and my skills at dress making are very poor. I’ve found my passion in bag making. You’re an inspiration! Thank you for sharing your passion.
I love your classroom! We don't even have Home Economics in our schools anymore. I think some kids could benefit from learning how to sew, alter and refashion. It's so nice that after a long day of teaching sewing you kindly take your time to teach us what you know. Thank you!
It's unfortunate that Home Ec courses have been taken out of so many schools. Food, clothing and shelter are the most basic human needs, so isn't it good to know a bit about them!? Thanks so much for the support 💘
I was able to share your web page with the deer young gal from church. She was so excited she's a homeschooler I've taught her a lot but you are magnificent for her tonight thanks
It’s just possible that your classroom is heaven on earth. I could quite happily be locked in and could keep myself occupied for a long, long time. It is so far removed from my school sewing lessons (40 years ago) where I made a navy polyester A-line skirt (for school wear) using a hand cranked sewing machine!! So grateful that you are willing to share your knowledge with us all.
I would have loved sewing in your class. My mother taught me to sew on one of the first elec Singers when I was about 6yo. When I got to school and started Home Economics (sewing & cooking) i was early to the first sewing class and found the machines were identical to mums. I'd almost finished making that first project (a skirt - a simple tube hemmed on each end with elastic threaded thro for the waist) before the teacher arrived and was sent to the head's office and instantly expelled from the class. Thank heavens I got my own machine and continue sewing to this day. Thank you for the tour.
WOW! Your students are so lucky to have you as their teacher. You are so talented . You're amazing! I love all of your tutorials. Your classroom Omg! Love the organization and the abundance of patterns and supplies. How fun! You've thought of everything! I just love you! ❤
Fabulous! It takes me straight back to my sewing classes which I loved in High School! Am so loving your tutorials and have learned loads and even remembered some old skills I once had. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I have a regular machine and a serger and make most of my own clothes. Now I am learning how to alter thrift store clothing too. Love it all!
I gained my love of sewing/creating in middle school. I wad 13 and have had a love ever since. Back then it was called Home Economics (HomeEc) I still remember my first make, a t-shirt with a small embroidered bumble bee at the left shoulder.
So impressive! Your enthusiasm just shines through. Your students and school district are so lucky to have you. I love all of your videos and am grateful for all that you have taught me. A million thanks from an ardent fan.
I had the pleasure of fashion and cooking classes in my school in South Pittsburgh.. West Mifflin South School! Wow your a teacher in public school! Congratulations! Rock on Teacher!! Bonnie Ohio
Catherine your classroom is wonderful, reminds me of my days of learning to sew in school. We did fashion shows and all the lovely things your doing with your students. I learned to love sewing and made many of my own cloths and later became a quilter. I am getting back into clothing and learning from your videos how to upcycle. Thank you for teaching the kids (and us) to sew, wish they still did this kind of class here, it is so needed.
What an amazing class room. Wish I had a teacher like you when I was at school :-) Your students are very fortunate to have a room like that and a teacher like you!
When I was in 6th, 7th and 8th grades we had home economics 1 semester was sewing the other for cooking. We had old sewing machines in the tables and we had to have our own kits with box, scissors, etc. That was in 1980-1984, I still have most of the items from then still. I would have loved to learn how to embroider and use a serger back then.
I am a fairly new subscriber to your channel. I believe you are a talented sewist and tailor. I just saw this video that popped up on my screen. The classroom that you teach in is well stocked with so many things. I’m sure you enjoy your job. I take exception to your comments about cultural appropriation in fashion. Teaching students that there is an invisible shield around certain things that a culture is known for is misguided. Every culture originated in the Garden of Eden, so we are all from the same God. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, I believe. I also believe that it honors a culture when one wants to copy it. When tourists go to the Bahamas, every little girl wants her hair done in cornrows. The locals are not offended by such. They do the cornrows to earn a living. Similarly, when one wears a Grecian inspired gown, one is honoring that style. When one goes to a foreign country and learns to speak a few words and phrases of the language, that is showing respect to the natives as well. When one travels to an Islamic country and dresses as the natives do, that is also showing respect and honoring the differences. You would try to eat and enjoy the local cuisine when traveling. These are all part of the same mindset. Telling people that you ARE something you are not and trying to benefit from it - now that is real cultural appropriation and should be condemned. Just wanted to put my 2 cents in. 😊
It is sad that the schools no longer have the sewing classes any longer. I learned all my sewing skills when I was in Jr High School which has impacted my life as I have been sewing all my life. I wish they would bring this back to schools.
I just found your channel and watched a few videos. I thought, "She is so clear, encouraging, and positive about making mistakes. She sounds like a HS teacher" and so I was excited to find this and I'm inspired by the organization of your room!
What an incredible classroom you have! And the kids are so lucky to have you for a teacher! I’m so glad I found you on UA-cam! I’ve sewn for 60 years and I’m still learning new tips from you. Thank you so much for sharing your precious time making UA-cam videos! Where are you located, if I may ask.
I wish our school had had that type of class, and of course you to teach it. You are like a female Bob Ross with lots of fabric and little fluffy zippers.
Your classroom is awesome what a great programme. I’m sure it’s a stressful job but so much fun at the same time. It helps that you are super organized. Your student are very lucky to have you xxx
I had wonderful teachers when I took Home Ec (in the 60's) but our rooms were nothing like your room! You have very lucky students, not only because of the room but because of YOU. My dream was to become a home ec teacher but life happened and I didn't pursue the dream, but I still sew...a lot! As this video was playing I realized you were Canadian...and then you mentioned the Lower Mainland which is where I'm living....you are cool!
You are inspiring. Wish I had had you as a colleague when I taght fashion arts. Fantastic organization ideas!! Best class in the world, learning to sew. Retired now but learning lots now from uou.
Wow Catherine what a great classroom. Wish I had this in highschool. I love the spinning wheel you have on the upper shelf. Your a wonderful teacher. I'm learning so much watching your videos. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. Love 😘 it all.
Wow. I love your channel so much! Thrift flips are my favorite, but this video is amazing. I thought you were probably a stay at home mom. Who knew! You shape young minds to develop the sewing skills that will follow them for life. My hat's off to you. 👏👏👏
I'm so thrilled I found your Channel! I love your Tutorials! What a beautiful Classroom!! 🤩 I took sewing, grades 7 thru 12. Wow!! We never had all these supplies accessible to us. We had to purchase everything on our own. One of the first things we made was a sewing tote bag. So if we wished to take something home over the weekend we had away to carry everything. So Sad that Schools in the US rarely even offer Home Economics anymore.
Wow! What an amazing creative space to teach your lucky students! I teach beginners to sew in classes of about 10 students at a time. I can’t imagine trying to keep 20-30 students all organized and paying attention in class all at once. Bravo to you & thanks for sharing your wonderful classroom!
OMG- you’re teaching at my old high school (clue on your memorabilia board) ! Just wish they had your program when I was there many, many years ago. So glad to see the kids have the opportunity to learn skills and take advantage of your expertise.
Catherine, that classroom is amazing. I am also a teacher like you, and I will definitely take some pointers in terms of layout for my classroom. Thank you for the tour.😊
Thank you so much for sharing with us! I really enjoyed seeing your classroom and think you are so talented! I've been watching your videos for a while now. Do you make Bucket Hats? I have made a few from different patterns I have bought but have had problems sewing the crown to the top piece without puckers. Do you have advice, or can you do a video?
Catherine! What a fantastic classroom. My classroom was moved to a new space this year and I am currently trying to figure out the organization. This totally helps. I thought I have a lot of stuff- you have so much more. As soon as I have the room sorted and organized, I’ll post a video too! You prep so much for them! Thanks for the great video. Where do I get the magnifier light?
I'd LOVE to have a tour of your room. How fun! I got the magnifier lamp from our main sewing supply wholesaler in BC, N. Jeffersons. But I have seen similar things at Fabricland.
I traded my Baby Lock Imagine in for an Accolade. I wanted a cover stitch machine, but I don't have room to put a dedicated cover stitch machine. I miss my Imagine, it had a thinner stitch that width than the Accolade.
I can not believe your classroom. I never, in 30 years of teaching clothing and textiles was I able to buy fabric for projects. Each student had to buy there own fabric which was a problem for some students. A local children’s clothing manufacturer would give me some end rolls but students did not want to use these fabrics. You and your students are soooo lucky. Most of the US school systems have cancelled ALL home and family programs because of cost. Really, sad.
I took sewing in seventh grade (and never stopped), but we had to shop and pay for our own pattern, notions, thread and fabric. The school supplied the machines. It looks like you supply every thing. Can students buy their own fabric and pattern?
Yes, I encourage them to buy their own, especially the older grades. The creative process includes all of those purchasing decisions at the fabric store!
When I was in School my needle work teacher was frightening, she would shout out loud, I loved sewing but she was scary, I wished she had been nice like you it would have been more enjoyable, This was in the 1960s.
Wearing fringe is cultural appropriation??? That’s ridiculous. I’m a (mostly) white woman and I love love fringe. I wore it in the sixties and seventies, and the flappers wore it in the 1930s. Am I trying to pretend like I’m Native American (or First Nations)? No. Even tho my great great grandmother was a Cherokee woman. I also wear Indian batiks, Chinese silks with Mandarin collars, and some African prints, too. Why? Because I appreciate all the cultures. And I don’t support division.
I loved my Home Ec class in grade 7 & 8 and learned so much. My two younger sisters did not take it and 45 years later, they both regretted it. Awwww, thank you, Charlotte! I really do have the best job!

What a wonderful classroom! It looks like your kids are ‘set up’ to be successful! I’d LOVE to learn there!
I had the pleasure of fashion and cooking classes in my school in South Pittsburgh..
West Mifflin South School! Wow your a teacher in public school! Congratulations!
Rock on Teacher!!

Wish I had a teacher like you when I was at school :-)
Your students are very fortunate to have a room like that and a teacher like you!
Oh..another thought
My sewing machine is a Janome work horse!
Blessings to your students and their families!

I love your organized class room.
You do an excellent job as a sewing teacher.
I love your videos.
Thank you for sharing!! Awesome class room!!!!
Fabulous! So glad I watched!
What an awesome room & an awesome program! Your students are fortunate to have a teacher so knowledgeable & passionate about fashion arts/design!
Thanks so much! That's very sweet!
Thank you so much, Kathy. I'm in the Vancouver area.
Awwwww, thank you Nancy Ruth! That is an awesome comment. Nice to meet a fellow "cool" Lower Mainlander, lol!
You are inspiring. Wish I had had you as a colleague when I taght fashion arts. Fantastic organization ideas!! Best class in the world, learning to sew. Retired now but learning lots now from uou.
Really nice! I love this.
Wow Catherine what a great classroom. Wish I had this in highschool. I love the spinning wheel you have on the upper shelf. Your a wonderful teacher. I'm learning so much watching your videos. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. Love 😘 it all.
wow, wish I could be one of your students!
Wow. I love your channel so much! Thrift flips are my favorite, but this video is amazing. I thought you were probably a stay at home mom. Who knew! You shape young minds to develop the sewing skills that will follow them for life. My hat's off to you. 👏👏👏
Love it, it looks like heaven x
You are an amazing teached. When I was a teacher we didn't have much funding but during the summer I collected lots of supplies for my kids.❤
You look lovely Catherine in that outfit. Loved the video. Very interesting. Thanks for sharing. 👍🙂
Thanks, Queen! It was fun to do. Always nice to have you on board!
OMG- you’re teaching at my old high school (clue on your memorabilia board) ! Just wish they had your program when I was there many, many years ago. So glad to see the kids have the opportunity to learn skills and take advantage of your expertise.
Wow, that's amazing! Stop by anytime for a visit!
@@CatherineSews Thanks - that would be so interesting. I may take you up on that 😀
I want to be in your class!! I guess your UA-cam videos will have to do. TFS
Lovely!
Catherine, that classroom is amazing. I am also a teacher like you, and I will definitely take some pointers in terms of layout for my classroom. Thank you for the tour.😊
beautiful!
Loved this ❤
Thank you so much for sharing with us! I really enjoyed seeing your classroom and think you are so talented! I've been watching your videos for a while now. Do you make Bucket Hats? I have made a few from different patterns I have bought but have had problems sewing the crown to the top piece without puckers. Do you have advice, or can you do a video?
Thanks! I enjoy your videos ❤❤❤.
Thanks so much for the Super Thanks! Greatly appreciated!
Great tour Catherine! I hope you're going to produce an awesome Halloween costume tutorial!
That's a good idea. So far, I'm only fixated on one particular costume, but if I get a few more good ideas...maybe!
💃💃💃…WOW! …💃
I traded my Baby Lock Imagine in for an Accolade. I wanted a cover stitch machine, but I don't have room to put a dedicated cover stitch machine.
I miss my Imagine, it had a thinner stitch that width than the Accolade.
Oh my God!!! You have an amazing classroom😍 I'm pretty good at organize stuff around me but you're a super organized person. Love your classroom!!!
Haha, thank you!! I have to give credit to the previous teacher who built the whole organizing structure. I just have to maintain it!
Is the student who pay for the fabric fee?
I can not believe your classroom. I never, in 30 years of teaching clothing and textiles was I able to buy fabric for projects. Each student had to buy there own fabric which was a problem for some students. A local children’s clothing manufacturer would give me some end rolls but students did not want to use these fabrics. You and your students are soooo lucky. Most of the US school systems have cancelled ALL home and family programs because of cost. Really, sad.
❤️❤️❤️
OMG. I use hockey pucks as pattern weights too! Lol.
Right!? And it's just so Canadian.
Nice to hear from you my friend! I hope you're well!!
One of a kind…teacher!,, I’m curious where your home town is… are you on the island!
@@estherclausen81 No, I’m in the Lower Mainland but I love visiting the island!
When I was in School my needle work teacher was frightening, she would shout out loud, I loved sewing but she was scary, I wished she had been nice like you it would have been more enjoyable,
This was in the 1960s.
I can relate! My sewing teacher's name was actually Mrs Holler, and she did!
I wish I had you when I was in home make in 1952
Hola me gustaría saber si tú tienes afuera de la escuela Donde dar clases
I am sooooooo jelly of your room.
I count my lucky stars everyday!
Wow did not even know this kind of class was offered anymore. Ah just realized this is not in US.
22:17 is my mouse!!!!! I’m so happy 😁
Oh, well done! It's lovely!
@@CatherineSews thank you!
, cool seeiNg the. Kids
I’m interested to take the sewing class I need the address thank you
My class is in a high school but you might find classes in your area!
So, I hear that YT is evapping comments, eh?
Something weird is definitely happening. I can see comments in my notifications, but not here. Weird?
Wearing fringe is cultural appropriation??? That’s ridiculous. I’m a (mostly) white woman and I love love fringe. I wore it in the sixties and seventies, and the flappers wore it in the 1930s. Am I trying to pretend like I’m Native American (or First Nations)? No. Even tho my great great grandmother was a Cherokee woman. I also wear Indian batiks, Chinese silks with Mandarin collars, and some African prints, too. Why? Because I appreciate all the cultures. And I don’t support division.
