ATLANTIC Ocean RACE PREPARATIONS - Sailing Tranquilo Ep. 57
Вставка
- Опубліковано 11 лис 2020
- We've finally made it to Las Palmas, and we start preparations for the transatlantic race, the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers. 13 major tasks await us, from provisioning for seven people for 3 weeks, to fixing a rusty smile between our keel and our hull - a real cause for concern...
And best of all, our family crew make it into town!

i am beyond hooked on your vids
Remarkable preparation, nothing is left to chance, and crazy atmosphere ! Ready for the big jump ...
Yeah it was pretty intense atmosphere!
Awesome video! Keep it up. Stay safe and fair winds ~
Cheers thanks guys, you too!
Feel the breeze family just did it the wrap looks incredibly
Great idea Denny, and looks like it's the way the Volvo 70s go...
The one thing I would suggest if you decide to do a wrap make at least 2 layers depending on weight maybe 4. And keep extra for mishaps There's plenty of channels to show you how to wrap good luck on your trip ahoymateyarrr
Good luck and fair winds from Brisbane Aust.
Cheers John!!
Looking forward to seeing the crossing and how you guys manage day to day tasks. Cheers from Denver CO USA
👍
cant wait!
Also from Denver and maybe the arc in a few years
Excelente comdante e esta maravilosa modelo muito bonita e maravilosa
WOW! A 41 minute video! We enjoyed every minute of it.
That is a ton of work to edit all of that! Very enjoyable to view! Great work.👍
Have a Great and Safe crossing!
Great to hear! We do wonder sometimes about if a vid is too long, great to have your feedback! Thanks!
Estupendo vídeo ,y bello velero ,es posible subtitular en Español ,,gracias.
Wd 40 works wonders on the track
We thought wd40 is great for loosening up metal pieces that are stuck, as opposed to silicon or mclube's sailkoat which is best for reducing friction. We've found mclube's the best product for these applications.
👍
Not to scare you off, but I had the same hull-keel crack on my Hanse 445 (2014) few years ago and I had the keel lifted off the hull and found a pretty horrendous assembly with a rusting keel top surface (due to the moisture that had come into the crack) and various big washers(!) applied (by the Hanse factory) in the kit between hull and keel to correct for differences in height over the keel top surface. This was nicely repaired by a professional boat yard. One of the keel bolts showed small signs of rust being exposed to the moisture. I can provide pictures if needed
Wow, that's bad. Yeah the 445 in the ARC also had the rusty smile... seems a common feature of Hanses and needs to be addressed.
And with regard to 316 stainless not rusting, it can be susceptible anywhere there is an absence of oxygen, I believe.
Hi friends! Thanks for the Amazing videos!🙏❤️
May I ask you What kind of boat you have Good luck🙏❤️ Greetings/ Joseph - Stockholm Sweden
Thanks Joseph! Tranquilo is a Hanse 455. Cheers!
@@Expedition_Tranquilo Thank you good luck and take care🙏❤️🌺
Hi Guys .. Just thought I would mention .. #propspeed for your prop and thruster. This is an awesome product and has always outlasted my antifoul paint. they also do a product for your sensors and underwater lights too. I'm not an employee or have an affiliation with #propspeed ... its just a great a product.
Awesome thanks Alistair, next time!
When you fill the boat with everything for all the crew for a big journey you realize you need a bigger boat . I was.there.in 1988 but with plans to go to Brazil but cash ran out so sailed the islands for a year and then sold up. Now was going to be there this year on 30 ft mono hull but chose to wait in Ireland and cruise Ireland until next year due to all this covit nonsense going on . Flexible plan.
Yes, although it's amazing how many bluewater yachts around 35' take part in the ARC. Apart from taking a few days longer they made it across fine!
Just curious how much lower the boat was in the water after provisioning :)
Good question, around 10cm lower. The additional weight actually added to better sea kindliness, more inertia through waves.
This is why most cruisers who convert a day sailor or raceboat like mine to a cruising boat-- increase / change the water line to 6" higher from the original. This way--- you are safe from growth or barnacles growing on that expensive upper paint job (which has zero anti-foul on).... ;)
Really informative review of preventive maintenance and professional repairs. Not everyone on YT is a do-it yourselfer, and others are but prefer to get the pros to do major repairs for time and quality reasons. You have the right mindset about maintaining the value of your boat and being able to document all the TLC for a new owner in future. Did the ARC help you finding these tradespeople or did you arrange this all yourself? Seems like Las Palmas is an excellent place to get work done. (the anti-foul covered neighbour notwithstanding :)!
Thanks Donal! Yes we wanted to have the pros do it for the first time, especially for some of the critical items - sails, rigging, engine - didn''t want to cross the pond without making sure they were as perfect as could be!
The ARC didn't help us find these trades, but the yard is right next to the marina and they have most of the trades we needed. Penta and the sails team are also at the marina, so all key services are there. Watt & Sea and B&G organised their technicians to be at the ARC themselves and went around to everyone who has their kit which was very valuable, to say the least!
Would you mind sharing what all the service work cost you? I wonder if Hanse is watching your channel. I am surprised to see so many issues that appear like routine quality stuff for a manufacturer of that size.
The fixing of the 'rust smile' between the hull and keel cost around 1k euro. Fixing the bowthruster door Raulnautic did for free, after all they were the ones who put too much antifoul within it... The antifouling and the engine service were just regular maintenance...
It would have been a lot less money doing it yourself. The capt seems a bit helpless..
Sheesh, someone help the guy out: torque-wrench
The Penta mechanic? Yeah, but he still did a good job.
In future Jerry may want to use a second line for hosting up the mast...
I cannot believe I as a specialist in safety issues and accident investigations, that so many of the cruising community do not have a second spare Halyard ...I for one have this feature..
You should NOT be hoisting up the mast without a second safety line...
A 63 ft drop with a sudden stop ends with a box......
Fairwinds from the @captains.chair
100% Jim. I did ask Jerry if he wants a second line, he said nah, won't be a problem...
We always use the main and spin halyards when going up.
Do you just pay for all of your maintenance?
Yes, now that we've left the marinas of Europe behind. And the diesel on the rare occasions we have to motor.
Next time you pull the boat out for anti foul check out doing a wrap much better than paint
Yes definitely considering it! How well does it keep off barnacles and other growth?
@@Expedition_Tranquilo check out Feel the Breeze Family they just got it done
Don't know for what you were using the silicon spray but don't use it on any "running gear" like the track on the mast. It's a "wet lubricant" and collects amazing amount of little debris and makes things worse in no time. Only "dry lube" for mast such a graphite based ones. Was watching RAN sailing the other day and this came from some sailmaker guru who's supplying sails for olympic teams etc. But yeah what he said kinda makes sense. Good luck with the crossing and stay safe!
100%. That's why we swear my McLubes. It's a dry lubricant. Thanks!
@@Expedition_Tranquilo Shoud have watched the whole video first before commenting but when you got up to mast in the beginning and said "silicone" I went like stop get down haha;) Good choice of lubes now, thumbs up!
You are handsome in batik clothes. Hehehehehe.
Why thank you!
@@Expedition_Tranquilo You're welcome.
Leffe Blonde
Yes, expected it would be hard to get Leffe once we left Europe!
You need Prop Speed on your prop! Google it for next time an Amazing product way better than antifoul!
Cheers Mike, will look into it!
The guy doing the sanding at the port rudder was covered in black antifouling and no breathing protection. All that crud must be damaging his lungs....Thanks for the video.
Yeah we stayed away from the yard as much as possible for that very reason!
May I give you an advice. If you want to sail around the world don't race (as indicated in the title of this epsode). Not even one ocean crossing. Top priority is to bring your boat home in one piece even if you sail a few days longer. Don't underestimate the wear on a boat after years on the ocean.
Unfortunately you miss the Capo Verde island. We stopped there and liked it very much. Perhaps you moore there on your way home.
If you looking for some information about routing and islands check out our blog from our circumnavigation 2014-2017: www.circumnavigation-noe.blogspot.com
It comes in german but the Google translation is quite ok.
Fair winds
Hans
That's right Hans! We live by the adage a principal of a sailing school told us: 80% 100% of the time. Not 100% 80% of the time. Everytime something's gone wrong on Tranquilo, it's because we pushed 100%. (Or because we were tired).
BTW we make this very point in the upcoming crossing video...
it doesn't seem fair why from the factory they don't fully protect the products supplied. What's with that I wonder?
That's right. And many of the yards don't honour their warranty terms, trying to worm their way one way or another. Seems to help letting them know you'll post about any issues on social media...
xxxxxxx n
Just curious. In the video you are talking about xmas. Are you talking about 2020 Christmas or 2019. Just wondering because nobody was wearing those stupid masks.
Hi Eric, yes this was pre-covid. Otherwise we'd be wearing masks too, sailing oceans is tough enough without one of us being ill.
@@petertorrey236 No rip off, just takes time to produce the videos!
Dear Peter, if this is such an old video, and my comment to Sailing Tranquilo is old news, than why are you making a comment on it.??????
