They're from a Japanese rock band called "Plastic Tree". Ryutaro is the vocalist (which you're right about, he is the one with the checkered shirt), and Akira is the guitar player :)
It sounded to me like he said "'Kodomo wa mujaki de ii desu no,' to omotte mitetan desu yo." (he was thinking "Those kids are so innocent, that's so nice"). So actually, he did say "desu no-to", which is exactly how you say "Death Note", but that was just a coincidence. I love this video, it's so cute. (^^)
