I actually owned this puzzle when I was around 20 years old! A dear friend ( who is now my husband) bought it for me, knowing I loved puzzles. Anytime I talk to people about puzzles, I bring up the Flat Banana because it took me four months to build, although in my defense I was a full-time student with a busy social life at that time. At the end, I glued it all together because I never wanted to rebuild it again. Such a fond memory. Thanks, Karen, for reminding us how fun and therapeutic puzzling is.

vintage springbok puzzles look like an absolute joy to put together because of how thick the pieces are, it must be so satisfying being able to pick up large sections and not have them fall apart even if you were just staring at a whole block of YELLOW for quite some time 😂

When I was in London a couple of years back I bought a 1000 piece puzzle of the London Underground map as a souvenir. Little did I realize that, after all the tube lines and station names were in place, I'd end up with about 250 flat white pieces. Those pieces took far longer to put in place than the entire rest of the puzzle...

Hi Karen I was fortunate enough to pick up this yellow flat banana puzzle at Goodwill a year ago. I found some good "tells" that helped me put it together and I don't think you mentioned them already. I was glad to see that I had sorted the puzzle pieces as you had. I went a small step beyond and sorted them also based on color variances.
    1. You must keep in mind that this isn't just a picture of yellow. It's a picture of a yellow banana. Color variances are expected. If one would look at a real yellow banana before starting this puzzle it helps your eye to notice the subtle shade differences at random points.
    2. When looking at a real and firm banana one notices that of course it is not flat. Now picture what it would look like if you flattened it in order to take a picture. A very obvious thing would come to light. The banana peel itself is not flat. It has edges that give the banana its stability and firmness. Now, go back to the yellow flat banana puzzle box and look for the banana's edge. It should pop out to you now and you'll wonder how in the world you missed it before. I first saw it when I was taking a picture of the cover to show a friend of mine what puzzle I was going to do. (If you still can't find the banana edge, it's located down the center of the picture from top to bottom. The color variance is a distinct wide line.)
    3. Camera filters can really help find color variances in a solid color puzzle. The subtle differences can leap out at you once you know what you're looking for.
Lastly, nice job with this puzzle. It's on my list of ones that were most difficult to put together. All the best to you.

Last year, I was gifted an old Ravensburger puzzle. I initially didn't want it because it was not an image I wanted to work on. But I was so happy I worked on it- the pieces were so very thick and even sections of two pieces didn't come apart. You could also lift it once finished. Pure joy- similar to this yellow puzzle. The sad thing is- they don't make them the same anymore.

It was a happy childhood memory. I would have been 7 or 8 in 1979/80 when I helped my parents assemble this puzzle in the living room. A year later, they divorced. I remember doing the red sticker part, probably the 2nd time it was put together.
I didn't know it was a bragging rights thing. I wish I could say I did it as a child, but I probably didn't do it alone.

The comics on the back of the box are very "punny", but also very clever!
I happen to like puns. They are actually often difficult to create, and they cause your brain to have to do a little flip to make sense of them.
However, I would like to object to the epithet "boomer humor". I prefer to think of it as "dad joke" humor or little kid humor, because it's clean yet clever.
Also, the cartoon style of each panel is still being used today. It's proment in the Red Bull ads, for example.

Your sorting routine is impressive and key to your swift solving. Good skill demonstration. (Nice working music. YELLOW)

Since you are still struggling to describe puzzle pieces. Here is a quick nomenclature you could use that is fairly simple and can probably be extended to describe non standard pieces:
    - all outs would be 4/0 or simply 4s
    - all ins would be 0/4 or simply 0s
    - 3 outs, 1 ins (or castle as you call them) would be 3/1
    - 3 ins, 1 out would be 1/3
    - 2 outs, 2 ins regular shape puzzle pieces would be 1/2/1 (I guess 1/1/1/1 would be a more consistent description, but I think most people would have a better intuition as to what a 1/2/1 piece would be)
    - And the non regular 2 outs, 2 ins would be 2/2
from there you can expand to shape that have less or more than 4 ins/outs using the same type of patterns

Hi Karen, what's the length and width of your puzzle table? And would you ever do the 13200 piece Disney Orchestra puzzle? Working on it now and it's a lot of fun!

I certainly wouldn’t do a Starbucks jigsaw but my favourite coffee chain (Prêt à Manger) is branded in my favourite colour (burgundy) so that would tempt me.

I remember my late Mother had a jigsaw puzzle which was black apart from a strawberry in one corner! Took her ages to finish!

yellow! I've been binge watching some of your videos over the last few days and have been wondering. Since you puzzle for long periods of time at once is there anything you do to help your back from getting sore? I can only puzzle for 30 min or so at a time because my back starts hurting from leaning over the table.

A few days i was puzzling while watching this and i was curious if the puzzle would stay together if i picked it up like you did the yellow puzzle.
(For context: have 2 others by the same company as the one i was doing and they definitely changed their puzzle manufacturer, pieces were thinner, harder, and had a blue back now. The old pieces would stay together fairly well)
i picked up the top third of it i had completed and one side crumbled, i got it together farely quickly so thank goodness.

I recently gifted a "Pick me up Puzzle" to my grandparents. Supposedly they also stay together when picked up and that's a selling point in its own right. 😁 Don't know if they are sold in the US also.
