I got the first moment to play from my teacher just the other day and wasn't too excited about it. But after finding your recording I got way more excited to play it. This is one of the pieces I need to be able to play when applying for auditions next spring so finding the motivation to start practicing was needed. Thank you!
I watched this awhile ago, and left the page without commenting or liking it, and somehow I was constantly retargeted with it. I knew that there must have been some reason for that, so here it is. Never commented before. I am American, I learned this piece from the Franz Beyer edition, and there are differences in accidentals in print to what is published abroad, and when I first listened to the Konoe recording, while drunk, I thought, "this guy has somehow misread the music!" Only when I sobered up the next morning did it occur to me that something else had gone on and that he had simply learned the piece from a different edition. Aha. (In all seriousness, this is a very good performance! Well done.)
This concerto was written sometime between 1780 and 1795, so the lack of orchestral color or variety of sound can't be blamed on the period. After all, Mozart was in full swing during this time working out the same compositional concerns. So we're left with the sad reality that Hoffmeister just wasn't that imaginative of a composer. The playing is great though - it's a shame this is what violists get to play.
The " interesting" or imaginative viola repertoire is from 20th century .. There are few works originally written for the instrument in the 18th or 19th century and this is one of those... You can't choose much because there isn't more options from that period... That is the reality of the viola music
i love that the winds look like their feelings are hurt whenever they aren't playing.
Hahaha
Superb musicality, outstanding technique, great understanding of the form and style. Hofmeister doesn't get better than this.
One of best interpretation on UA-cam 🔝🔝🔝🙏🙏🙏

There is no doubt about it but the German provincial orchestras are superb - lovely solo playing,
The oboe players are like: "We wanna go home..."
