  • Despite being athletic since the age of seven, Ms Fathima Zohra, who is quadriplegic, sometimes still feels like she does not belong when she works out at the gym. www.straitstim...
“At the gym people tend to stare like they are wondering what I’m working out for. But disabled people need to work out too. “We also have hobbies just like everyone else. It’s the same for working. Disabled people have dreams and aspirations too - we don’t just work to keep ourselves busy, which is what many people assume,” says the 24-year-old, who was left paralysed from the neck down after a car accident in 2017 left her with a spinal cord injury.
The desire to promote greater inclusivity and disability representation in society drives Ms Fathima, who also goes by Zoe Zora or Zora, to advocate for people with disabilities. The programme manager at inclusive running club Running Hour posts candidly about her experience as a disabled person on her Instagram @zoraaax6, which has almost 32,000 followers.
The Straits Times executive photojournalist Jason Quah documents how Ms Fathima has emerged stronger from her accident.

Dear Fatima Zohra, don't care about what people think or say, you ate in a better shape than some able-bodied busy bodies. God bless you, keep going.

People with spinal cord injuries belong in gyms and health clubs just as much or more than able bodied people do.
As my friend was told in rehab...your upper body will be doing the work of your legs from now on--it is imperative it be in the best condition possible.
Of course that doesnt apply as much for high cervical level injuries, but it certainly applies to all paraplegics and low level quads/tetraplegics.
