  • My top 5 reasons as to why a borescope is a great addition to your tool box for automotive repairs. Ever since I've been introduced to borescopes, they've been a huge asset both to my videos and for troubleshooting/inspections. #teslong #mechanic #mechanictools

    Reason #1
It’s a great way to check out identification numbers. This can be anything from an engine identification for an engine or a part number on a component. A lot of times you will find that within one model of vehicle, you can have multiple part numbers of an item. Perhaps you don’t want to take everything apart as you are still driving the vehicle. To further help this, You can’t even use the borescope to take a photo instead of writing the number down by hand.
    Reason #2
This is a great way to inspect to used vehicle. Perhaps you’re looking at purchasing a new vehicle for yourself, and you have the mechanical knowledge to look over yourself and rather not pay someone. It’s a great way to check in behind panels if a vehicle is in an accident, inspect a frame for rust or rot, and look over hard areas in an engine to see if there are any faults such as poor repairs or leaks.
    Reason #3
It works great as being an extra set of eyes. Recently I was working on my BMW M 57 diesel engine With minimal room. I was able to insert the camera at another angle, this gave me a good view when testing the crank sensor along with replacing it. Without the borescope, I would not have been able to see what I was doing.
    Reason #4
A horoscope is a great tool to help assist with troubleshooting. They can assist in anything from finding a fluid leak, inspecting the inside of a cylinder head without doing a complete breakdown, viewing damaged components, etc. On my boat, it’s a two-stroke and that particular model is known to have the oil pump gear strip inside the engine. After removing the oil pump I was able to insert the bore scope into the drive hall and view the condition of the gear. In my situation there was barely anything left of the gear, I was lucky enough that it didn’t cause any damage to the engine and I decided to install an oil pump delete kit instead.
    Reason #5
With many models of horoscopes available on the market, especially the models I use from Teslong. They can take photos, and record video and audio. This is a great way to take notes along for whatever project you’re working on, you can save the media footage for future use to have another person reference it, and it can even be used to document any repairs.
    Reason #6
Did you lose a bolt or a tool? Some borescopes have attachments for the top of the camera, either hooks or magnets that retrieve those lost items. It can be hard routing your way around those tight spaces, but it’s worth it when you don’t have any missing tools or are stuck trying to replace a lost fastener.

The damn cat swats the little toys under the TV cabinet. Using a borescope with a long claw tool retriever works great!

Had to replace timing chains on a 4.7l once. Before I even dug into that kind of job I decided to use my borescope to inspect the inside of the cylinders. Lone behold, there's a crack in cyl 1 and chipping inside cyl 5. Didn't justify doing chains and saved me half a grand and 7 hours of labor to fix a trashed engine. If that isn't a reason to own a borescope, I don't know what is. Good video! P.S, that little V8 ran for another 50K miles with knocking chains and scored cylinders, haha!

Thank you and glad to hear you avoided a big headache. Was that the 4.7L from Dodge?

I really like the magnet attacment. I wish I'd had it few years ago, when I had 2 Audi V6's. The next owners probably had 10+ free sockets when they take those belly pans off :)

Lol, yeah I've managed to find some tools in vehicles over the years.
