The first time I've witnessed these type of performances was back when I got to see Kenichi Ebina on America's Got Talent 2013. He wasn't exactly a dancer nor a computer animation expert but the artist in him knew how to work with visual projections to entertain an audience. I'll provide the link on the next comment box should you like to check his performances out.
Another AGT contestant who made use of visual projections is Hara. The difference lies in that he's a magician, not a dancer.
