My brother was gonna throw away his sons ps4 slim and I checked it out first and it was also just a dying hard drive and I swapped it out and it’s alive again so sometimes parents will throw it out cause they’d rather buy a new one and not deal with the hassle of trouble shooting it
I recently bought a cheap Slim where the harddrive was also dying. The problem was that the previous owner had also mucked around with the disk drive and somehow it wouldn't take in disks (and of course he didn't tell me that). They had somehow managed to put some of the cables that go around the disk drive inside the disk drive, which prevented it from working. I fixed that and put a new harddrive in, turned out the console was still on firmware 8.xx, so I updated it to 9.00. Now all I need to do is to clean the rollers (that one's on me) and the console is fully working again and on 9.00.
absolutely fantastic phil..loving the fact that you have got your hands on a console that others may well have let it rot away but you have not only given it a new lease of life but more importantly it's another electrical device saved from landfill thank you for sharing 👏👏👏

I had the exact same issue, replaced the port en the retimer chip and the problem was the hdd hahah from now on i will be checking the hdd first😂, nice video bro!

I've done that before too, changed the port and encoder only to realize it was the HD!
1st time seeing this kind of work replacing hdmi port, its perfect and definitely better than factory.

My brothers xbox had no sound and screen kept flickering black.
I replaced the hdmi retimer following your videos ( thank you ) and the screen is perfect but still no sound , I've did hard reset and still no luck.
I do get sound through a headset though 🤔

480C is a bit much Phil. Try preheating the board and maybe around 400C on the hot air to keep the board in shape
funny that i came up on your video. someone put out an xbox one and i think it has the same problem with the hard drive. i already replaced the dvd drive twice but it won't go past the logo screen. i would like to install an ssd for faster boots.
If it had been dropped or thrown, which it looks like one or both happened, then with a mechanical drive, it would be very unlikely to survive. So yeah, you should've checked the drive before the decoder :P haha. Came across your channel randomly after watching something, really enjoyed it, will give you a follow on Twitch.

Hey man, I took my ps to a hardware store for them to resolder the PS4 pro power connector back on the motherboard, however, now my PS4 Pro gets power, but it doesn’t turn on.
As in, the blue light at the front comes on flashing.
None of the ports work & there is no signal in the hdmi.
After about 45s it will turn off.
Any idea what it could be?
My brand new switch was left in Dock for many mths and it now won't turn on. I see ur repair u did which was for a resistor blown. Nintendo want £126 for the repair as I wanted it official nintendo but is that well over priced?

I think the beep-on/beep-off thing could have been a slightly dirty connector.
Where I use to live in Santa clara ca once a month the city residents can throw out what ever in that time and you wouldn't believe all of the stuff I've found digging thru the garbage from x boxes ps3's, super nintendo countless controllers and all sorts of toys legos etc.
Try to use low melt solder so it can melt faster and not damage the board with heat by any means. Other than that great job

Well I mean you know they got their use out of it and some people just would not want to pay the cost of repair you know at my shop in the United States that would be minimum I would have to just because of my time charge 150 USD to fix and something like that I probably would actually refer to another company and I believe they charge around $119

how do you not strip things with that drill? It seems way too powerful for electronics work.
I actually have a good method for avoiding that. I make sure my wrist stays limp, so when it reaches a torque level that's just about tight enough my wrist will absorb the power of the drill and stop me stripping screws

just discovered your channel, great content mate i used to do repairs on 360's during the rrod times.
while others were bodging them with cheesehead bolts, removing x clamps and blasting them with heat guns, a few others and myself were reballing them with leaded solder and reiinstalling the x clamps, the only "upgrade" i did was fitting the heatpipe gpu cooler if it had the crap one on.
i dont touch consoles anymore been there done that, good luck.

Believe it or not I found one in a dumpster in a tip a week ago, turns out it only had a faulty hdmi port.
I once found a PS4 slim on top of a garbage bin (must have been four years or so ago, so they were actually worth more than they are now), it had the top part of the case missing and the metal parts down to the upper part of the drive was heavily bent. The laser was still fine, as was the disk drive. Got a BLOD Slim with no disk drive for around 50 Euros and switched all the components I needed and used that PS4 Slim for quite some time (until I switched to a Pro, that I had also gotten as defective and fixed).
It was all along the hdd

Lol yeah that's nuts, he did bring it up in a plastic bag so I presume that's the same one. It looked like it had a bit of rubble on it, like plaster or something. Very small world lol
@@TheCod3r it was definitely the one buddy the client from the property had ripped out the bathroom prior to me starting and had taken alot of the plaster/bond of the wall and was all over the rubbish in the front garden, is your brother in law called Dean at all?
putting an SSD in these machines helps because the reason the main HD was dead is because of it being knocked/dropped so yes an SSD removes the knocked damage risk

I bet it was actually working before you even replaced the port. The port did need to be replaced because it was broken, but I bet the hard drive was the only thing keeping it from working.

It's a profession, I used to do it myself and was happily turning over £1k+ per week. With the correct licenses, correct safety equipment and dedication you can make a lot of money collecting scrap

When the screen was black, it was caused by the hard drive, but it was not a total no display issue.
I wonder if that Xbox One S could have had a Black Screen of Death issue, because if that’s the case, the HDD could have possibly just been corrupted, and could have maybe been saved along with the console itself.
