I'll be putting this on the list. By the way. I'm about 120 pages into The Chibineko Kitchen. And it's poignant yet warming. The cat in the book does play it's part well. I do love me a calico kitty.

I try to read widely but have to confess that I try not to choose horror and Sci-Fi - I can't really get on with that genre

Sounds like it’s trying to be a new take on ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ but not understanding what made that story work.
