He was looking pretty rough in this documentary. Around this time, he was djing for an FM station in NYC and man.... he was really f'up then! God love him but wow. He has clearly turned the corner.
Thank you Joe, Jimmy and Dale for the great show in Columbus this past Sunday night to support our Military Veterans. James Gang is a CLASS ACT. Joe you lived in Columbus for only a short while in the mid to late 1950s but it was great to hear my/our hometown named a street after you and the mild fall weather inspired you to write “Indian Summer” And whenever I find myself on Clark State Road I will recall your history lesson that the city of Gahanna Ohio was founded by your great grandfather named Clark. What a cool story. And Joe hope you have a Happy Birthday on November 20.
Dale Peters seems to have a great personality and sense of humor. You've got to have that (plus a lot of musical talent) to coexist with someone like Walsh.
As much as Joe was Mad as a box of frogs back then as soon as he straps on that guitar and starts singing it’s like BANG there it is, Absolute God given talent, None of these muppets today could touch him even when he was not in the best shape he still had that Voice, I think he was very Underrated as a Singer and even as a songwriter, he wrote some fantastic tunes especially with the James Gang ❤️👍🏻🇺🇸⭐️🌞
Sorry dude, but both of those songs were on the album Bang! and Joe Walsh was absent. The guitar player was a young upstart by the name of Tommy Bolin.
I could be wrong, but I wouldnt be surprised if Joe was still using during this period because as a recovering addict myself he just has the look of a man who is out of his mind.. compared to how he looks now or within the past 20 years he truly looks sober and healthy.
@@michaelkavooras7664 good for him, man. He's an awesome guitarist and has such a down to earth personality when I met him. He was very enjoyable to be around compared to seeing him during his using days he was annoying. My parents bought me his star licks guitar tutorial vhs for my birthday back in the 90s and he was absolutely out of his mind during the making of that guitar tutorial to the point I felt like my parents were cheated out of their money. I couldn't believe star licks actually put his episode out because he didn't show how to play any of his licks like when they profile other guitarist on star licks.. he just sat around and was doing weird stand up comedy bits that weren't funny.. You almost feel sorry for i'm watching them in that video. His full star licks episode is on UA-cam if you want to check it out.
Yes.... around this time, Joe was dj'ing for a rock station in NYC. I heard every Friday.... he was smashed. Hilarious, but totally out of his mind. this like 90-94?
I was 16 when my brother came out the army 1970 and bought a load of albums with a little state of the arts stereo that was the first time music had its effect on me three albums were the yer’e album- the thirds and James gang rides again my two of my favourite tracks were STOP and COLLAGE Wow
I saw the James Gang on their first trip to NY. They played at Hunter College auditorium in 1970. A small and great place to see bands. We came out of there we left half our hearing ability behind us. They played LOUD let me tell ya. We met them outside after the show. They were begging to impress, and they did.
Gotta love the sense of humor of this band and Joe in particular since he could've been far too big for his britches had he not been who he was? No what I mean? Great music too, of course goes without saying!
We have all done things in are lives we learn we grow why should ppl in the spot light be any diffrent we are all human at the end of the day love ya joe xxxxxxx
I believe is was about 1972. I went to the Games Gang concert at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. I attended Santa Monica High at that time. Joe had just left the band and the band played on without him. The audience boo'ed at first but calmed down after they started playing. So I almost got to see Joe play. Funny, later in life, Joe became one of my ultimate guitar heroes.
Not sure how I have missed this post. I thought I had seen them all. Thanks for sharing! Good to see the James Gang reunite. Why 3 dislikes? I think we all know that Joe had a substance abuse problem! This is what made Joe what he was and the man he is now. He is clean and sober now since Hell Freezes Over, it's all good now!
Yeah, just what the Eagles needed: yet another "nice clean guitarist". Micromanaged, LA-approved trash. I'll buy the idea they did it as a favor to him to keep his head out of the toilet, but it sure as shit did his spirit no favors. Joe will tell you the same thing Keef or Clapton will: they were best when they were young and loose and crazy. Doesn't mean you can sustain it, though. Any more than a pro athlete keeps that shit up for very long.
Why is that every time I see Joe Walsh he is so wasted? Ok, I think I know the answer. I so love their music. The Ashes, Rain and I is so indicitive of how big they were. Really fantastic songs played oh so tightly.
The documentary failed to mention that Joe and 'Foxy' were students at Kent State Univ. where Joe flunked out after a year or so, that they began their career playing the bars in Kent. In fact, the cover photos on 2 of their first albums, 1 with the Kent waterworks in the background and James Gang Rides Again where they asked local biker gang to borrow their hog Harleys for the photo op and we're drunk as usual. Perhaps a recording scout first spotted them at Peabody's in the Flats in West Cleveland but they began careers and gained a following in Kent bars. I know, I was there until 1973. Chrissie Hine(Pretenders) came from just down the road in Cuyaga Falls. Michael Stanley, Tracy Chapman, Devo all came out of the Akron/Cleveland area. Those were the days and we rocked in N.E.Ohio and birthed much musical talent. As with Jack Cassidy & Normal (Jefferson Airplane) who established a music clinic- school at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio...their old stomping grounds. Athens also known for their bad ass Meags County weed.
I was Stationed at Ft. Lewis and sometime in '71 at the Paramount Theater, Seattle. I was hooked on them ever since that night. Must have been just before they became "famous". lol
Joe looks terrible. Every scene he's drunk. He's gotta cringe if and when he sees this. If he hadn't cleaned up his act, he wouldn't be alive today, based on this trajectory. Great to see them all back together again. Big fan.
It is a wonder he survived. Many did not, sadly. This guy is crazy but fantastic. It must have been a wild ride for anyone associated with him. Love his songs. Great to dance to. When I hear a song of his, I cannot keep still. Those were the days. Everyone had to grow up i guess...well.... except Joe!
About this time Joe was spending time in Memphis, TN...perhaps had an apartment there. My brother-in-law was working at the Memphis Commercial Appeal newspaper. It was 2am and he was sent on a food run. He stopped in a Taco Bell near Poplar and Highland and standing in line he noticed a guy semi-passed-out with a burrito hanging out of his mouth. By brother-in-law has always been a huge music fan, and he thought he recognized this man. As he was preparing to place his order he realized the man was Joe Walsh! I just texted him to make sure I recalled this story correctly, and he replied, "I stood in line for 15 minutes and that burrito never moved." I LOL'd and then thanked the stars that Joe got his stuff together, and I'm thrilled to know he's healthy and happy in 2020. A real gift to those of us who love gutsy, soulful guitar playing and unique personalities!
Thank you for sharing the story! I know the area you’re talking about. I am from Memphis but we moved out of town around that time. I never knew Joe lived there. I read your story to my husband and he said, “sounds about right” 😂
@sunberst1 Agreed, 3 piece is fun but demanding. I played power trio twice in my career and each time it was worth the work for the experience. There are some reunion tour videos from, 2007 I think, online here unless they got pulled.
I was on a bus in Wichita Kansas and a lady driving it said she used to babysit The Singer of the band. I called her a liar and she pulled me off the bus with my ear
They also did not mention Don Kriss, who played bass on their first record. They centered on the best selling lineup. I actually like the 2 Tommy Bolin LPs as much as the Walsh stuff.
I love Joe! If he was sober or messed up he still played great. It would have been around 1990 that I had tickets for Walsh and the Doobie Brothers and Red Rocks in Colorado. I only found out when driving into the parking lot the Joe had cancelled and it would be only the Doobies. Worst Concert I ever attended. Really bad sound system for outdoors.
Glad you quit drinking Joe, it's apparent at this point you've got that classic, " don't I sound great " syndrome going on. Been there, done that🤠 Love this band!
So glad joe got sober a couple of yeara after this had he kept going like this he would not have lived much longer . He seems really messed up and unhealthy here.

James Gang "Yer Album." One of my favorites. Beats anything Joe did solo or with other bands.
Jim F. is a great drummer.
Jim Fox was such an underrated drummer, one of the best rock trio drummers ever! The Bomber is THE BEST!

Totally agree. He was brilliant.

Absolutely correct..also gary Peterson from the guess who..both were awesome

I was fortunate enough to see this lineup of the James Gang perform at VetsAid 2022 on November 13. They still play fantastic together!

Bang & Miami my favorites! The Bolin period of the band is very underrated
One of my favorite bands. Great sound and tone.
Mr. Walsh had quite a ride....glad he has now landed safely. Bless Ya’ Joe.
Loved the Bomber! Of course everything they did was great!!!
Man, thats one of my favourites in whole youtube. THank you for uploading this. It really inspires me every time i watch it.

Sad that Jim and Dale stopped playing. The 3 of them are so casually creative!
Their jams are quite the gems.
