Radiohead lost their stage to wind in Toronto in 2012 and it killed their drum tech and injured a bunch of other crew. The wind is no joke once it starts getting a hold of big things.
I read somewhere that the wind by itself isn't so bad, but there's a big difference between the wind blowing a leaf into your face and the wind blowing a Lexus into your face.
Every time I heard about the wind and the screens and such stage trappings in this video, I was reminded of this incident. Really horrifying thing to happen. Lucky it wasn't during a show, the damage done would have been even worse.
Thanks Swell, glad you made it back. According to wikipedia - "Live Nation has been linked to at least 200 deaths and 750 injuries at its events in seven countries since 2006. From 2016 to 2019, they have also been cited for at least ten OSHA violations, fined for several more serious incidents, and sued civilly at least once for a concert incident." Having a monopoly on an industry definitely doesn't mean you're good at it.
Now im not gonna say they are doing the best they can but like it also comes with the territory from all the events they do, like anything more u do something the odds of something bad happening are increased, just for example driving ur car, the more u drive the likelihood of u getting into an accident is increased
I went on Oct 23 and honestly it was so worth it. I was at the barricade at the Black Stage for 5 hours including when Bring Me The Horizon and My Chemical Romance performed and felt fine. The security had a good eye on crowd surfers and everyone put in the effort to make sure they landed okay. Also they would routinely check on all of us at the front, ask if we were okay and toss water to us every 20 minutes or so. If anyone wanted to get out of the crowd people parted the seas and helped nudge them to the barricade where security pulled them out. I will point out, however, that in addition to security being great it was also a good crowd culture. Most die hard fans of these bands ranged from early 20s to late 30s and as such the crowd had a lot of experience at heavier shows and behaved differently than a super young crowd. There just seemed to be a solid understanding of concert etiquette and rock show etiquette. You didn't wanna be in the most pit? No problem this 6' 5" man with a mohawk will pick you up and move you to the side. You lost your ID? No worries, these girls in fishnets 3 rows back found it and passed it forward cause they recognized your face from an earlier set. (yes, this did happen!) It just felt abundantly clear that people in the crowd, at least from my section, had gone to these types of events and had a good understanding of appropriate behavior. After all, we were all super hyped to see our dream bands but not at the cost of harming others. Besides the quirks in organizing like the massive merch line and initial confusion on how to get to GA pit, I had an amazing time and got to see my favorite bands all in one place.
Yes! I had a feeling it would be okay. Also "when we were young" and first going to these concerts, there were other late 20s-early 40s people there to show us how to do things. We were taught how to behave. Someone made sure I didn't lose my bag at an event "when I was young", and now I will do the same.
I am old.. Like officially old enough to retire. I've been to thousands of gigs, and probably 100 festivals here in Australia. There have been incidents, including one I remember where a young woman was killed at the barricades, and this led to immediate changes being implemented, like split barricades etc. to reduce the risks. However, I agree that in general, the younger the crowd and the more inexpensive with etiquette = more scope for problems. One thing I've noticed over the years is that a good crowd is kind of a self policing beast. If someone is being a dickhead in the mosh pit, the crowd will work together to move them out before security has a chance to step in. I've also seen plenty of examples of the band identifying a problem from the stage, and calling on the crowd to get the idiot out. I remember the Red Hot Chilli Peppers just stopping mid song, pointing out the dickhead and telling the crowd to do our thing. We did, and they re-started the song, and all was well. I think people who are new to live music in general, but festivals in particular, think it's going to be a space where anything goes, but you couldn't be more wrong (part of my PhD was actually about the unwritten rules of live music). I've been to everything from acoustic sets to death metal, and everything in between, and at a good gig, everyone respects the rules, so you get things like the examples you gave... ID handed forward, helping people get through, bigger people shielding smaller people. On a good day, it's such a wonderful feeling of community and connection. On a bad day, it's bedlam. Go see every gig you can. Even go and see bands that you think you don't like much, because often seeing them live changes things. And look after each other!!
I was probably about 10 ft behind you near the pink stage you lol there was a single moment where the crowd crush got a little scary where i was standing but it dispersed pretty fast
I remember going to music fests circa 2006, and it being like this. Then I went to one a few years later in 2012, and suddenly it's every person for themselves. No one chatting with strangers. Everyone getting really pissed if you tried to weave your way through the crowd to a better spot. No one dancing and goofing around. It was all so serious, and made me never want to go to another music festival ever again. I remember my friends and I being able to casually go back and forth between drink/food tents, and bathroom breaks, and then make our way into the middle of the crowd no problem. We were also able to take sitting breaks between sets pretty easily. Usually one at a time though, as the others stood around the person, to make sure they weren't stepped on. I also knew if I wanted to crowd surf, I would make it to the other side of the barricade, be helped down by security, and shown the way around the side of the crowd, and choose where to get out at. I would do this multiple times per show, and always find my way back to my friends no problem. People always let me through.
That wind is terrifying. Big Valley Jamboree in Alberta had a massive storm come through about a decade ago and they refused to cancel it when they should have, and only made the decision when it was too late. A speaker was blown off of the structure and crushed a woman to death, and it was awful. No show is worth risking that.
I remember that. We used to go to craven and one year a storm tore through so badly the tenting area looked like a bomb went off. Luckly they shut down the concert bowl a hour befor. Mother nature can be mean
@@redneckreviews3016 The whole city was wrecked, as were a lot of nearby areas. People’s trampolines went flying, businesses signs were shredded, a bunch of gas stations had the little covering over their pumps ripped off, it was honestly wild that more people didn’t die.
Yeah, I really wish they toured in Europe as I don't think I will ever have the courage or the money to visit US (if they did tour Europe prior to 2016 I wouldn't know, I was literally 10 when self titled came out and was not allowed to go to concerts that did were not in normal arenas until I was like 16 or smth)
I saw them in July 2018, I don't remember if they performed that song or not. But I feel like Hayley was actually lip syncing for the majority of the concert 👀 she'd made a post about being sick before the show and the vocals sounded a little TOO perfect on most of the songs. Maybe she's just that good but I've seen numerous bands and no one sounds EXACTLY the same live, she did. The show was overall fun though. They were touring with foster the people and no one paid attention to them which sucked cause they were a headlining band at one point! But once Paramore were on stage it was great. I hope you get to see them one day 😊
@@petewhite3844 to be absolutely fair, she does sound incredibly good live - I saw them after Brand New Eyes came out, they did All I Wanted, and it was freaking awesome. BUT artists who normally sing live will sometimes lipsync
I’m choosing to believe Avril was removed last minute because the animatronic they replaced her with years ago was malfunctioning FNAF style and they were worried about getting caught
I drove by myself for 6 hours and spent so much money to stay in vegas for the saturday date. While I understand and physically felt the wind that day, any saturday ticket holder has a right to be sad and upset about the cancellation. I wish I ran into Amanda, that definitely would have turned my day around haha
Sympathising why it was cancelled and still being upset is understandable. Lost money and time are bad. It doesn't mean one expected them to hold the event despite the big risk
@@goddammitalana she never said she was? Why nitpick when she clearly explained her position and it’s totally understandable anyone else would be upset as well
I just don't think that concerts and festivals are a great investment for me. You have to be super wealthy, for it not to matter if it doesn't work out. If Live Nation were not forced(due to the fallout from lots of people dying due to their negligence) they would never have cancelled. I understand that cancelations really suck though, but it is the fact that Live Nation couldn't give any less fucks about people and safety, that makes me not want to support them. And ironically- no matter what you like listening to- Live Nation runs all sorts of music events.
"A lot of distraught emos wandering the strip," is such a fascinating sentence. I feel like this was nowhere near as bad as Fyre Fest or Astro World, but was nevertheless a mediocre to poor concert experience. Not everything has to be "the worst X ever", and it seems like everyone wants an event to either be The Best or The Worst when most will be a mostly good or mostly bad mix.
I went to the mcr show in oakland, and seeing black donning individuals roaming the nearby neighborhoods and fast food joints before and after the show in droves was hilarious, kind of had the same appeal as the "emos with santa" niche of christmas mall santa photos. Even more funny when you compared them to the other pedestrians who were most definitely locals.
It looked to me like a typical Warped Tour day with a great lineup from the start when I bought my tickets. Wound up being a typical Warped Tour day with a great lineup when I attended on the 23rd. Who woulda thunk!
@@hannobonanoart I paid $300 for GA and got my money’s worth! These bands cost a lot more to see now than they did a decade ago. Definitely saved thousands of dollars seeing all of them at this festival than on their individual tours.
There were a lot of potential red flags about this festival, but the fact that it went off without a hitch is pretty impressive. Booking the bands after you advertise them is a feat I can't imagine anyone else pulling off, and the lineup was pretty good tbh. Next year is not looking quite as stacked, but still not bad.
22:00 my only guess about Avril, I know she has Lyme disease, I’m not sure how much it still affects her but major fatigue after a big festival wouldn’t surprise me as a reason, although she has been on tour recently, so that’s not really the most concrete answer
We were walking to the event the 1st day and didn't even get a text that the event was canceled. They text us literally for everything else, but not that they canceled it. I was irritated.
OOF. I'd been mad too. And God forbid if you were a teenager who dragged an uninterested parent to this thing and didn't get notified of the cancellation....
@@DrawciaGleam02 it was all bad tbh. The side shows that we're being put on were shut down by the fire marshall left and right, and the Strat had the freaking swat team show up because they were afraid there was gona be a riot. Emo nite was even packed that people weren't able to get in. All bad lol
amanda thank you very much for the subtitles i know you’re not forced to have subtitles on your videos and you do anyway, it’s so helpful for me with hearing problems, you rock
i was also at WWWY, and went to warped tour once before and they were definitely quite comparable. it felt like if warped tour had a bigger budget to me lmaoo. either way, i felt similar to what you did. all the “issues” i had were generally just music festivals discomforts, but otherwise i felt it was great and everyone ik who went enjoyed it! definitely not a fyre fest or astro-world type of situation at all.
21:19 Yes!!! Discovering bands on a live setting is amazing. That’s how I fell in love with The Wonder Years more than 10 years ago. Saw them open for Comeback Kid and Four Year Strong and I was just in awe of them. Been a fan ever since.
As someone who was too cheap/skeptical to plan a whole trip for this, thanks for the insight! It seemed like overpriced Warped Tour to me lol. P.s. if you like longer festivals with this sort of music I highly recommend Riot Fest in Chicago. You pay about the same price for three days of Riot Fest as you do for one day of WWWY. Plus sets are longer, it’s one of my favorites. ❤
@@OmfgHiii nah, it’s still overpriced lol. The only reason this was such a big deal is because it took advantage of Warped Tour nostalgia and MCR reuniting. MCR played Riot Fest and tickets were about the same as WWWY with them as ONE of the THREE headliners for one of the three days. Then WWWY turned around and capitalized on the same vibe the minute people heard Tom Delong was back with Blink, doing exactly what they did before.
Riot fest is awesome and typically well managed, though I will say the main stage audio can be a little trash at times, but that's normal for any fest.
omg your food comment was such a mood. My sister and I went to a con this summer, she bought a couple drinks throughout the day and we ended up spending the same amount because I just kept buying snacks and sodas and grazed all day.
I went to Warped Tour in 2005 and 2006 and I genuinely do not remember there ever being food. In fact I remember buying a bottle of water in the middle of a heatwave for $5 and getting heat exhaustion because I didn't drink enough water.
I'm so glad I went to Warped in the later years. 2014 had free water refill stations all day and mist sprays to walk under. I wouldn't have survived without it.
Similar to when I saw The Jesus and Mary Chain and saw lots of elder goths, some of whom brought along their goth kids. I was mildly amused bc I definitely wouldn't categorize The Jesus and Mary Chain as goth, and yet the elder goths came en mass dressed in all their goth splendor... I'm guessing for the sake of mid-80s nostalgia.
So I’m an older person and have been to MANY MANY concerts and festivals. I was at Punk Rock Bowling last year in Vegas. I think the problem with what people were complaining about at this festival is that they have no or little concert experience. Complaining about lines or difficulty to see the stage is silly when that’s what happens all the damn time. I’m 5’4” and often have a hard time seeing stages but I’m used to it and know it’s probably gonna happen
those are normal festival/concert problems I absolutley aggree 😄 the GenZ crowd is probably 18-21 now and there were no concerts for 2 1/2 so for some those might be their first experiences and they aren't used to only seeing a glimps of a singer and a whole lot of giant man in front of you 😂
I had day 1 tickets and when walking to the grounds I was thinking, holy shit its so windy I hope this doesn’t affect the fest 🤦♀️ Seeing around 80,000 sad emos walking on the strip was a unique experience to say the least, still bummed but I definitely understood why it got cancelled.
After experiencing the Indiana State Fair stage falling because of wind gusts, I'm glad the festival and the city made the call to not proceed with Saturday. Luckily I'm insane enough that my entire friend group had both Saturday and Sunday tickets so my refund essentially paid for half my trip because I got my Sunday ticket for $100 the week before. It was such a fun festival day and despite the crazy crowds I was able to eat, drink, pee, and still see (almost) all of the bands I wanted to see! We went with a group of 8 of us that all have tons of Warped Tour/festival experience/have worked in the music industry and we all agree that they have nowhere to go but up from here. Also the Bring Me The Horizon after show was incredible!
I didn't see you. I am obsessed with how good day 3 was. I saw Story of the Year, Dashboard Confessional, Pierce the Veil, The Used, AFI, Jimmy Eat World, Taking Back Sunday, Alkaline Trio, Thursday, Death Cab, Bright Eyes, Paramore, MCR and Horrorpops. In that order.
I love live music so much but I always feel so pretentious talking about it. Just something about feeling the bass vibrations in my chest and seeing all these different people vibing in unison fills something inside my soul.
It's definitely a special thing. I've only seen a few, Green Day, Shinedown, Tenacious D and a rock fest with various bands, but man when the music starts it's like lightning jump starting your heart!
I know what you mean It’s a bummer people would make u feel pretentious for enjoying one of the oldest most bonding and arguably spiritual forms of human bonding. We’ve been doing group & live music for millennia 🥰 sound monke
I live in the UK and was extremely close to buying tickets. I really do not know why, but I had a bad feeling about it so backed out right before I hit purchase. I was about to buy tickets for the Saturday so that would’ve been a huge expense for no reason. I’m glad I didn’t spend all that money as I would’ve sadly gambled a lot more to fill the emo void.
seeing those amps swinging back and forth made me SO anxious omg- just thinking about that dancer who had a massive screen fall on him during rehearsal...
I was supposed to go on day 1, the canceled day. But I had been hospitalized a couple months prior which took a toll on my health to the point I was unable to work for 3 months. Any money I saved up for the flights, for a hotel/airbnb, for food, and for any extra wants had all gone to medical bills and rent that I wasn't able to keep up with cause of my hospitalization. In a weird way I was saved from traveling from across the country on my own. I would have had a panic attack with how much money I would have lost, while being completely alone, and unable to fathom the stress I would have been in.
[x] stuffy nose [x] uncomfy [x] overstimulated [x] mildly disappointed [x] still flirting and trying to pick up guitarists so relatable you have now experienced warped tour
I actually went all 3 days for work. We were staying at the Strat, and Hawthorne Heights decided to play there on canceled day 1 in the middle of the casino floor. It got so chaotic; the rideshare drop-off area was closed off, and you had to show your room key to police to be let inside the lobby. It was so crowded and crazy inside that making our way back to the room elevators was a mess. (My allergies are still also absolutely wrecked.)
There was audio issues at the Black/Pink stage on Day 3 as well. Also there was the odd placement of Deathcab for Cutie and the Bright Eyes singer had a mental breakdown on stage :(
Tbf if I made a whole music career and someone used it to write 3/4 of a good novel with a deeply embarrassing fumbled ending using my music as its central named audio, I’d probably have a mental breakdown onstage too The novel is called Little Star I think and oh my god he just fumbles that message that man sharts the last moments of his book Yes this is inextricably tied in my mind to Bright Eyes.
I flew from Australia for Day 1 and the grief has been REAL lol. But I already bought tickets for next year as well, so I'm just really really hoping it goes ahead. From everything I've seen I feel like I would have had an awesome time so I'm just going ton try to stay optimistic for next year and not think about the fact I spent $5k on flights and hotels for nothing.
Absolutely adore Citizen and bands similar to it! They’re on next year’s lineup so…Really recommend their stuff, esp since live music is always more fun when you know all the words haha
Hi Swell, thank you so much for this in-depth video, it's always nice to hear from someone who was actually at the event. I know UA-cam comments are the worst way to get feedback, but I'm going to try it anyway. When you cut commentary into the video, it would be so helpful if that was the same volume as the rest of the video. Right now it's so quiet that I have to turn up the volume significantly, and then it blast my ears out when it goes back to the normal video. Just something to consider
I work at Chickies and Pete’s at the Sahara and when they cancelled the concert we had people crying, yelling, and going crazy. I understand the frustration having been cancelled. The wind advisory was out for a week plus before that day. They should have cancelled the day before instead of 30 mins before. That day we were extremely busy all day.
Like you, I never went to Warped Tour and I regret that as a “Goody Goody Two Shoes” I never had the courage to ask my parents to go/ or friends if they wanted to go. I didn’t go to this because I was hesitant and I’m an East Coast girlie. Ugh. The regret. It’s so heavy
I actually helped build the festival and specifically the neon tent (structure and stage, not audio)and this review was great. Love to see how people enjoy what we do in the shadows.
👍Loved seeing PVRIS and Mom Jeans at the Neon stage...nice work (on both the stage setup and the festival)...bound to be issues in the first year of anything that big!
My friend and I had tickets to day 2 and there were so many technical issues- Almost every set on the Pink Stage ran late and Dashboard Confessional's set was cut short because you couldn't hear them for most of it, the crowd was booing them because there was literally no sound except the main mic sometimes and i think the band thought the crowd was booing them personally at first, made for a real weird atmosphere. Then The Wonder Years on the Checkered Stage played through 3 songs, halfway through the 4th song Soupy stopped singing and the crowd thought it was a cute "singer wants to hear the crowd" moment until Soupy was like "you guys sound great, but we haven't been able to hear shit this whole time can everyone stop?" and then they were cut short a song from their set because of the delays. Both Paramore and Bring Me The Horizon had technical issues too but overall it was a really good show but the Black Stage was a bit difficult to see. Most of the bands on the first canceled Saturday were able to find places to play which was great, The Wonder Years, La Dispute and Mom Jeans all played a show out by the airport and then I know BMTH had a show at a club and some groups played the Emo Nite down the strip :) Also my friend and I were in line waiting for merch and you walked past and I was like "oh that's Swell!" but we couldn't get out of line to say hi!
oh my gosh i was one of those folks who thought that this whole thing had been cancelled months ago?? i'm glad you had fun! i was a warped tour teen goon back when -- in a pre-pandemic world i wouldve loved to have gone! but as things are im still struggling to be okay around crowds, so i wouldntve gone even if i'd realized it was on (womp womp)
Worked setting up lights and sound for a Shakespeare show held in a tent that was destroyed by a wind storm before the show went up, because Florida. The struts and trusses were fine, the issue is with things that catch the wind.
I went on Saturday, and I haven’t watched your video yet. But I just wanna say that it was magical imo. I’m so so so glad I went! I got to see so many artists that I love on the same day and while I’m 30 weeks pregnant and had to do a ton of walking, I don’t regret it in the slightest. 🎶🤘🏻
Yeah, but we're aware when there's going to be crowds and where to avoid. As a local, the only time I decided to go to a venue on the strip I thought I was going to die in a fuckin crowd crush if an asthma attack from being so tightly packed didnt get to me first (as someone who used to go clubbing back when I lived near NYC I thought I was prepared, dear lord I was not, it was pretty much being limited to standing still and getting choked even all the way in the back), that's why a lot of locals avoid tourist-y areas, the same appeal for us isnt there. It's just seen as overcrowded and overpriced.
Someone suggested they started selling WWWY23 tickets to coincide with the Blink182 reunion announcement. Since Blink 182 is a headliner, they wanted to bank off their tour announcement basically, so people didn't buy local tickets and decide not to travel to Vegas if WWWY waited to announce the lineup.
I read that news of the Blink reunion and their tour dates *accidentally* lead to the exposure of WWWY23 and that’s why they have still only released one date. The WWWY team will (allegedly) drop the rest of the dates whenever they initially meant to announce it. This is all hearsay, but I think it’s very believable.
Hey amanda! Fucking love your content so much. When you're explaining events that you go to can you please do a rundown of what it is for those of us who have no idea what half these things are? like you kind of just jumped into when we were young but didn't have any sort of explanation about what it actually was until deep into your story Thanks!
The singer for Bright Eyes, Connor Oberst, is notorious for performing drunk as hell, and in general just not someone comfortable on a stage, so this ranks about a 3 on the Bright Eyes Dysfunction Meter.
Man I really wanted this to fail so much more so more would try to get Warped Tour to come back. I miss it and tickets seriously don't need to be so expensive to see our favorites.
@@nerdgirl7363 eh idk. Now there is Sad Summer Fest which is hosted by Journey’s with ~10 artists actually live for $50, and When We Were Young seems to plan on making it a yearly event, and obviously it’s $300+, so it doesn’t seem like there’s really a market for cheap rock festivals anymore :((
I went the 2nd Saturday. I live in Vegas and remember feeling my house shake and trees snapping from the wind that day. But I had a blast on my day. I noticed the same "issues" as you did but overall, it was a good experience in my book. Just wish I got my hands on some merch while I was there. Was too busy running around trying to see everyone I could since I wasn't able to go to Warped Tour when I was younger either lol.
My husband and I discovered The Aces live when they opened for Five Seconds of Summer (which I won tickets to). Funny enough, we preferred The Aces over 5SOS. :D Fun review, Swell. Thank you!
When I saw the initial lineup, I didn't believe it was real at all. I'm just shocked the event really pulled through! Thanks for the recap I was super curious.
Agree with you about live music. My partner & I also like checking out the openers. Enjoy finding new music that way. One of our favorite bands was an opener, & by the end of the 1st song, we were obsessed. Have loved seeing them get bigger & seeing them grow there fan base. Every one of there shows I notice nothing but good vibes from the crowd (& I hate crowds) & pretty much every person we've meet at one of there shows were has been lovely. We go see their concerts pretty much anytime they come to our area, and always try to get there in time to see the openers. Side note, I haven't ever really made it to a music festival, but so want to.
went week 2 and had a blast. although i had my eye on those big white pillars from time to time... lol ive been to warped tour in 01 and 05 and warped had way more stages and bands had their own tent selling their own merch so it was a bit different in that regard. im glad they did this and hope for more to come, maybe i'll catch you at the next one!
My wife and I were in Vegas the first weekend of WWWYF, and yeah, that wind was no joke. Totally don’t blame them for cancelling even if the timing was sketchier than a caricature artist. Ironically enough we were bar hopping with someone Friday night who was supposed to attend Saturday and I asked if she truly believed that it was going to happen, and honestly we were both kinda surprised things had gotten as far as it has. Heck, the lines for the pre-shows Friday night were insane and good on the bands who did the club gigs to make things up to fans.
Happy you made this video! I went to WWWY on the 2nd day. It was one of the worst planned festivals I’ve been to because of the lack of planning. The lines were long!! there were hours long lines forming for getting to the entrance, when everyone could’ve just walked to the front entrance. The lack of bathrooms meant that the women’s restroom was at least 30 minutes every time. Lines that took an hr for drinks, food, merch…I feel like vendors were ill prepared. However, I went for mcr mainly and so for me it was well worth it. I do feel heartbroken for day 1 people.
It's better to have a bunch of pissed off people that feel like they got ripped off of not only money, but an experience, than to have even one person's life ended. It was definitely the right call to cancel day 1. No one believes what the wind can do until they see it for themselves.
Loved this video cause as a 37 year old on the East Coast I probably would have never heard about this festival without this video. I may be a millennial but never specifically identify with "emo" but I did go to warp tour in Charlotte, NC in collage (maybe age 20) where I saw some great performances from bands I liked and Loved it. I was surprised when I looked up the full lineup of this event you want to. I didn't see a lot of bands I was familiar with when I was was young (high school) lol but when you mentioned 2023 tix I checked out the lineup and saw way more bands that were big with my age range. Not sure if that was a purpose choice to cater to an age demo but I did think it interesting. As always thanks for your content. I always enjoy it so much. Stay Swell -
as a former nevada resident, those winds can be brutal and are absolutely a valid reason to cancel an outdoor event. I'm going to next year's when we were young so if you end up going please post I'd love to run into you!
I had a really good time on the 29th! Bummed I didn't bump into you I woulda said hi! My biggest challenge was getting through crowds from one band to another. If you wanted to see the beginning of a band you'd probably have to either stand way in the back so you're out of the crowd to get around or you'd have to leave the band you're at early for a decent position at the next band.
Stumbled across this video. Glad you broke it down for me. I love vegas and was having fomo REAL bad. After this i’m like eh i’m good. Sorry you missed out on warped tour. I went in 2011 and for $45….BEST VALUE EVER
Elder emos 😂 I’m 31 and the way I dressed was deff a phase but the music I listened to back then still holds a special place in my heart 🖤 & deff helped me through a lot of tough times.
i feel similar to you about concerts and it’s not even because of covid. i used to love getting as close as possible and being in the crowd. went to a concert recently for mother mother, showed up late and just stood on the side with my bf vibing. no one touched me, it was amazing. i hate being touched, and i’m also short and like to breathe lmao
Your notes here are on point as always. All of these honestly could have been said about every festival I’ve been to (minus the wind)- New York gov ball, Austin City Limits, and Atlanta’s music midtown. Audio issues probably were the reason any artist cancelled.
The thing with sunscreen. When I went to warped 2015 or 2016 I applied once or twice but it wasn't enough. Both me and my companions burnt- then we went to an IHOP and saw another group of burnt folks and they had also been at warped LOL
ALSO, I saw Avril Lavigne sing 2 songs when she was touring with Backstreet Boys in 2014. Her set then stopped. She was sick and apparently had to go to the hospital? Idk. I like the robot theory someone mentioned in the comments 🤖
I'm a former emergency dispatcher - police will frequently wait until a half hour or an hour before an event to get the latest report, if there's uncertainty that the conditions may not be too severe. Does it make sense? A little, that way events that don't need to be cancelled aren't. Is it frustrating? Absolutely, for everyone involved! In my area, the local emergency disaster response team weigh in heavily on calling events off. I feel like the stage collapse at the Indiana State Fair in 2011 is still in the minds of large venue organizers when there are wind and storm advisories / warnings. Largely the industry seems to take it far more seriously than they did prior to the disaster.
watching the first day unfold live on twitter was peak “train wreck you cant stop looking at” and it was very entertaining; Im sorry for folks who had to deal with it tho
21:19 YES!!!! I love discovering new music that way!! My friend will just text me a band and a date and I'll purposely not listen to any of that band/artist's music until the show. and then I just become OBSESSED lol. it's the best!
My partner and I went for Sunday WWWY as General Admission. We greatly enjoyed the experience and any of our complaints were due to regular festival concerns. I do commend them for having enough bathrooms and constant attendants keeping them clean or stocked with toilet paper. However, I saw on twitter that the ADA Compliance area may not have had the same care which should definitely be improved in the future. I had the same complaints with Neon stage as well. In a few situations, I tried to listen to the bands I wanted to see for a song or two and then would leave because I could only understand the chorus by the drum beat.
I didn’t use the ADA seating more than twice, but it seemed fine. People may be talking about the ADA entrance, which felt very lax. I had two people with me and none of us were patted down, ran through metal detectors, and our bags weren’t checked.
I was there for day 3 and I had a great time! I got to go with a group of friends and we had a blast. It’s great to hear the differences between the days
As someone who lives in Vegas, I can tell you that them hoping that the wind wouldn't be too bad is not a weird thing to do. The weather can turn on a dime here; it's bizarre. And yes, the wind was terrifying that day. I get it sucks for those who had tickets. Yeah, they could have communicated better, but I"m not going to fault the organizers for canceling, be it their own choice or the city making them. It was really annoying seeing people comparing it to FYRE Fest. The privilege of being "stuck" in Las Vegas and comparing it to being stranded on an island with zero amenities and no food is laughably pathetic.
I was at the Indiana State Fair during the Sugarland incident. They definitely made the right call canceling it, but they shouldn't have waited till the absolute last minute to cancel it.
VIP was worth it for the comfort:stage distance ratio. And I was ALSO sketched out by the presale happening before day 1. Now I’ll probably have to pay more for being cautious
I remember when Pearl Jam fought back Ticketmaster from over charging on tickets. It's what help keep the ticket prices down when I was young. Now your paying atleast 300 for a fest.
The only act I know that can keep prices down with their power is Garth Brooks. If he sells out he announced additional shows in cities. It combats the second hand market. 99% of artists are pretty helpless and it stinks I've been priced out by some many bands so I focus on discovering smaller acts and support them.
sounds like you had fun! i have a lil bit of FOMO bc I too never got to go to Warped, and would've loved seeing a lot of these bands live!! But I went to Austin City Limits for the first time!! Weekend 2 so I got to see Paramore live again! First time travelling as an adult, went with a friend, and it was so much fun! I completely thought WWWY was a scam, but seems like most of the issues were the usual concert/festival ones.
i went and it was a blast. it was my first festival and i will be going again. loved the energy, music, and the people . still suffering from post concert depression
There’s long lines for everything at any festival. Only time I had no lines was when I was a volunteer and they staff had their own bathrooms. It was glorious!
Went on the 29th!!!! I also went to the Lovers & Friends festival earlier this year in May, and they were so disorganized, water dispensers were pouring HOT water while there were lines of about 70-100 people for said water, people passing out, and someone thought somebody shot off a gun, causing a MASSIVE stampede. Fast forward to October 29th, this event was AWESOME. Everybody was having a great time, they made some adjustments with how spaced out the stages were, better set-ups, and the water dispensers were working great with barely any lines. There were also some sound issues, but very minor compared to the ones back in May. Very happy/lucky October 29th went off without any issues. I feel horrible for the people who missed out due to the weather though :(
My friend went to this (even though we all originally told her it was scam haha) and it sounded like she had a great time! It is so cool you went to this!
I THINK??? I saw you while my friends and I were jumping around for The Story So Far on our way to A Day To Remember!!! It was really thrilling because I vaguely remember you mentioned you were going in a previous video and you seemed very focused so I didn’t want to say anything. The 23rd was such a fantastic night even though we were a part of the 22nd cancelled group. Cried very hard in our hotel, moved our flight and managed to get tickets. So worth everything
Oh no!
Is this on UA-cam somewhere?
I was on the way to this show when we heard on the radio what happened. feel bad for the guy that died. sucks
Every time I heard about the wind and the screens and such stage trappings in this video, I was reminded of this incident. Really horrifying thing to happen. Lucky it wasn't during a show, the damage done would have been even worse.
And I live in NV, we have SEVERE winds here! It gets frightening a lot of times, just in general.
it's actually so refreshing to hear that an event had normal problems for once
Right lmao
Honestly I am so glad.
If you have an event that has the internet’s attention, trust and believe that Amanda is there or is taking notes.
I know! When we were young was happening I remember thinking I’ll just watch whenever swell makes a video she’s the most unbiased.
TWU.
I wonder if she watched a trash taste road show. it is pretty big on youtube
Thanks Swell, glad you made it back. According to wikipedia - "Live Nation has been linked to at least 200 deaths and 750 injuries at its events in seven countries since 2006. From 2016 to 2019, they have also been cited for at least ten OSHA violations, fined for several more serious incidents, and sued civilly at least once for a concert incident."
Having a monopoly on an industry definitely doesn't mean you're good at it.
Case in point: Astroworld festival last year
And as history has shown.....those who know they have a monopoly are the worst offenders. 😒
@@jtlovescodelyoko
They're linked to Astroworld??!?
Shoot, that also plays into why they canceled. Don't want a repeat obviously.
Now im not gonna say they are doing the best they can but like it also comes with the territory from all the events they do, like anything more u do something the odds of something bad happening are increased, just for example driving ur car, the more u drive the likelihood of u getting into an accident is increased
yea sounds like every pharmaceutical company
This sounds awesome, glad you had a good time!

I am insanely jealous of anyone who saw Paramore. Getting to see them perform “All I Wanted” would have been incredible.
@@miglek9613 they will be there April 2023 I believe!
BUT artists who normally sing live will sometimes lipsync
happy tour announcement!! fingers crossed you get to see them soon

Upset that it happened but you have no right to be upset at the event organizers/city for canceling it for safety reasons.
Someone should gather footage from that night and make a docu about all the sad emos trying to cope.
That’s just me in the mall when I was 15
Distraught emo wandering the strip
It looked to me like a typical Warped Tour day with a great lineup from the start when I bought my tickets. Wound up being a typical Warped Tour day with a great lineup when I attended on the 23rd. Who woulda thunk!
Is this Mr. Pretty Much It 😏
@@TheBongeSpob 👋🏼
For 500$ when warped tour was 25-40$ should have been MUCH better 💀
@@hannobonanoart the $500 was for the vip tickets. The ga tickets were not that much
@@hannobonanoart I paid $300 for GA and got my money’s worth!
I thought they got the bands in time but a lot weren't told by their management for whatever reason so they didn't know they were booked.

I was irritated.

i was also at WWWY, and went to warped tour once before and they were definitely quite comparable. it felt like if warped tour had a bigger budget to me lmaoo. either way, i felt similar to what you did. all the “issues” i had were generally just music festivals discomforts, but otherwise i felt it was great and everyone ik who went enjoyed it! definitely not a fyre fest or astro-world type of situation at all.
I got to see the original Misfits with Danzig at Riot Fest in 2016 and it was great! Highly recommend
Riotfest is amazing. My husband and I caught NIN and QOTSA there in 2017. That NIN show is my fave concert of all time
it's not overpriced since warped is not a thing anymore and these bands dont tour together / are biggest bands.
That sounds like standard issue festival price gouging right there, unfortunately
I'm so glad I went to Warped in the later years. 2014 had free water refill stations all day and mist sprays to walk under. I wouldn't have survived without it.
Warped tour, rocking big Ole Straw hats and a water pack all day long
i also went in 2005 & don’t remember any kind of food being there.. i remember water bottles & PBR tall boys being sold out of tents
My sister went and had to come home early from dehydration because there was supposed to be free water but instead there wasn’t
“elder emos” is killing me
I love it 💀
Similar to when I saw The Jesus and Mary Chain and saw lots of elder goths, some of whom brought along their goth kids.
I’m 5’4” and often have a hard time seeing stages but I’m used to it and know it’s probably gonna happen
those are normal festival/concert problems I absolutley aggree 😄
the GenZ crowd is probably 18-21 now and there were no concerts for 2 1/2 so for some those might be their first experiences and they aren't used to only seeing a glimps of a singer and a whole lot of giant man in front of you 😂
I had day 1 tickets and when walking to the grounds I was thinking, holy shit its so windy I hope this doesn’t affect the fest 🤦♀️
Seeing around 80,000 sad emos walking on the strip was a unique experience to say the least, still bummed but I definitely understood why it got cancelled.
As an Indiana native, I remember that falling stage being all over the news. Thankful that the city knew they had to prevent that.
I know what you mean

I was supposed to go on day 1, the canceled day. But I had been hospitalized a couple months prior which took a toll on my health to the point I was unable to work for 3 months. Any money I saved up for the flights, for a hotel/airbnb, for food, and for any extra wants had all gone to medical bills and rent that I wasn't able to keep up with cause of my hospitalization.
Also there was the odd placement of Deathcab for Cutie and the Bright Eyes singer had a mental breakdown on stage :(
Tbf if I made a whole music career and someone used it to write 3/4 of a good novel with a deeply embarrassing fumbled ending using my music as its central named audio, I’d probably have a mental breakdown onstage too
The novel is called Little Star I think and oh my god he just fumbles that message that man sharts the last moments of his book
Yes this is inextricably tied in my mind to Bright Eyes.
Jesus that’s horrific 😞 I’m so sorry!
Omg noo! Did you manage to get to the rest of the day? I’m from Melbourne so I understand the excitement x
Absolutely adore Citizen and bands similar to it! They’re on next year’s lineup so…Really recommend their stuff, esp since live music is always more fun when you know all the words haha
This is my nightmare for planning a major trip for an event. So sorry this happened to you and everyone else.
Glad you made it back ok! I just love that corset top though ^_^
¡Gracias!

Love the "we found a bar to play at" line!
.....wouldn't that mean the guests would overcrowd a local bar if that happened?? 😆
.."Swell talks the max occupant limit of the last-minute venues"
THAT"S WHAT I THOUGHT! 😆
This makes sense
I read that news of the Blink reunion and their tour dates *accidentally* lead to the exposure of WWWY23 and that’s why they have still only released one date. The WWWY team will (allegedly) drop the rest of the dates whenever they initially meant to announce it. This is all hearsay, but I think it’s very believable.
Hey amanda! Fucking love your content so much.
When you're explaining events that you go to can you please do a rundown of what it is for those of us who have no idea what half these things are? like you kind of just jumped into when we were young but didn't have any sort of explanation about what it actually was until deep into your story
Thanks!
The singer for Bright Eyes, Connor Oberst, is notorious for performing drunk as hell, and in general just not someone comfortable on a stage, so this ranks about a 3 on the Bright Eyes Dysfunction Meter.
I am so sad. I didn't even know this was happening. These bands were my youth. I still listen to these bands.
It did really well so I'm sure they'll do another. Hopefully you get to see that :)
Only the presale tickets sold out, theyll have another release closer to the date
Man I really wanted this to fail so much more so more would try to get Warped Tour to come back. I miss it and tickets seriously don't need to be so expensive to see our favorites.
I paid $30 for a 3 day pass to warped tour back in the day
If anything this will encourage them to bring Warped back because of how successful this went
@@nerdgirl7363 eh idk. Now there is Sad Summer Fest which is hosted by Journey’s with ~10 artists actually live for $50, and When We Were Young seems to plan on making it a yearly event, and obviously it’s $300+, so it doesn’t seem like there’s really a market for cheap rock festivals anymore :((
I would never know that any of these events or news were happening if it weren't for you. Thank you so much! 😭😭
The Intro still cracks me up after 1.5 years of watching.
Loved warped tour, wish I could have went to this! Boys like Girls were my absolute favorite!!!
You are so good at reading the wind of events you go to beforehand
I KNEW IT. I KNEW I SAW YOU THERE! I almost stopped and said hi.
Stay Swell -
I worked Production at WWWY ,Great coverage, Thanks for such an informative video
as a former nevada resident, those winds can be brutal and are absolutely a valid reason to cancel an outdoor event.
Genuinely so psyched to hear Amanda dish about an event that I don't care at all about, as usual.
Stumbled across this video. Glad you broke it down for me. I love vegas and was having fomo REAL bad. After this i’m like eh i’m good. Sorry you missed out on warped tour. I went in 2011 and for $45….BEST VALUE EVER
already know this is gonna be a banger vid
Elder emos 😂 I’m 31 and the way I dressed was deff a phase but the music I listened to back then still holds a special place in my heart 🖤 & deff helped me through a lot of tough times.
Moooooooood
Wys 👌🏼🥲
i feel similar to you about concerts and it’s not even because of covid. i used to love getting as close as possible and being in the crowd. went to a concert recently for mother mother, showed up late and just stood on the side with my bf vibing. no one touched me, it was amazing. i hate being touched, and i’m also short and like to breathe lmao
I'm not a yankee doodle, so I did a rough calculation... £9 for a pint of beer? Jesus, fuck that!
watching the first day unfold live on twitter was peak “train wreck you cant stop looking at” and it was very entertaining; Im sorry for folks who had to deal with it tho
Avril also brought out All Time Low and Mod Sun during her set when she performed at Firefly in September
“My hair looks like a rats nest” *looks smoother than mines ever been*
21:19 YES!!!!
Appreciate the hustle on the thumbnail 👏🏼
Avril has Lyme disease so that may explain her cancellation.
VIP was worth it for the comfort:stage distance ratio. And I was ALSO sketched out by the presale happening before day 1. Now I’ll probably have to pay more for being cautious
21:19 half of the people behind you are NOT having a good time lmaooo
