There's a hidden gem: EXS24. They keep quite a few drum samples and stuff. Sometimes I add fx and tweak them a bit, sometimes it just goes straight to the output. :)

.wav is a much higher quality but is also a much larger file. A high-quality .mp3 is 320kbps while a good .wav file is around 1650kbps. Get the mp3 if you don't have much storage space.
Also, beware of low-quality music players or software... an iPod shuffle is unable to play .wav files, for example, but the newer iPods can.
