Restoring Genuine Leather in 2024

  • Genuine leather sucks. Change my mind!
    The only thing the seller could tell me about this bag was that it's a vintage, genuine leather messenger from the 1970's. It was really worn down and in need of TLC. Even though it wasn't a name brand, I picked it up for cheap, took a risk, and gave it a shot to keep it from ending up in a dump.
    The thing to remember with rehabbing handbags is that genuine leather does not mean it's the real thing. "Genuine leather" is leather, but it's a poor grade of leather-- the stuff that's not great. As a result, genuine leather can be real hit or miss when it comes to the absorption of leather care goods.
    This bag is not my favorite. I realized when I was conditioning that it was not absorbing the product and that the conditioner was sitting on top of it. The end result is one that's sticky to touch, even though I buffed the daylights out of it.
    I'm posting this video for others to see what happens to genuine leather. Do you have any experience rehabbing genuine leather bags? What should I do different next time? Do you like how it turned out? Let me know in the comments below!

    I recently found your channel. I love your videos. You have inspired me to want to have a new hobby. I am binge watching your videos and have a new found love for pre loved bags. I just found this channel too. Over the past two years I have purchased nothing but preloved handbags and restored them. What a feeling to be able to afford luxury bags at a fraction of the cost and restore them. I love 💕 it!

    I would suggest before starting on the bag, going over it really well with alcohol to remove any sealant or treatment left on the bag, it may take it better but I think you did a great job and it looked beautiful!

    I love this bag, especially all the inside pockets. What did you have to do to remove the sticky feeling? I thought it turned out lovely. Had no idea that bags could be immersed in water like that, especially with a cloth lining. Thanks for showing how to rehab a bag - truth be told, I also liked it before the restoration...it's all those pockets!

    I love watching the process of you bringing them back to life, it’s amazing! If it didn’t turn out how you were hoping, it’s probably the type or quality of leather that didn’t lend itself to absorbing the conditioner like a thicker grain probably would have. It looks great compared to how it started!

    I would suggest you use Anglus Leather Preparer and Deglazer before dying it and use Anglus leather dye to recolor... that will make the color really come out.

    I think it looks pretty good the little faded weird patch on the back I don't like, otherwise the weathered look works.... a bit of a shame ....but it's certainly interesting watching your channel. I restore Bags as well, and I probably would've done a very light coating of leather dye on that and then used the restorative cream but I'm definitely going to look up that product you used and watch the rest of your wonderful Vids for more hints thank you :)

    Beautiful job on this. But I'm really confused by your "genuine leather sucks" comment- are you saying you prefer synthetics? They cannot be restored, once they've been used a lot, the finish begins to peel and the fabric underneath is exposed, they're garbage. You've proved that genuine leather- like precious metals as opposed to costume jewelry- can almost always be made beautiful again, so your statement has me scratching my head.

      So I recently saw another video where the person explains the grades of leather. Apparently when the term “genuine leather” is used, it is the lowest grade leather(cheapest and least quality).

  • @clare3335

    Great job! Do you think if using a color less conditioner (like Honey Leather) would help? How about color transfer using Saphir? Is it an issue? I’ve used that on a bag and had the same issue of non-absorption.

    • @LyssaMakesNew
      @LyssaMakesNew  2 роки тому

      That’s a great idea! The absorption issue with this particular bag is because of the grade of leather- this one is genuine leather. I’ve not had color transfer on grain leather.

    For the conditioner, it’s definitely depositing color… is this color permanent? Or have you noticed it fades as the leather dries out again?
