The ideal way to order a nasi kandar would be first to tell them you would like to have nasi kandar, then choose the type of rice (white or bryiani - not all places have briyani tho) then choose the protein and sides, eg. Fried chicken, black beef (sounds weird but its delicious), squid, then the vegetables, and then ask them for mixed gravy/sauce or kuah campur in Malay (pronounced champur, C is pronounced as CH in Malay). What makes Nasi Kandar special is the mixed gravy, its pretty unique to the region. Hope u guys get another chance to try nasi kandar.
Nasi Kandar is great with Fish Curry esp in Penang, fish eggs, sotong (squid) , beef rendang, or more tender different types of curry chicken. Vege like steamed or chopped ladies fingers, or green veggies and top with Pappadum crackers goes well.
If in Georgetown, Penang I will inevitably do these two things : 1. Breakfast at Transfer Road - "roti canai ayam set" or "roti goyang" and teh tarik 2. Lunch at Kapitan Restaurant, Chulia Street - chicken tandoori and garlic naan bread washed with their "susu badam" (almond milk)
The Hokkien mee you had is called Prawn Mee in Kuala Lumpur. In Kuala Lumpur, Hokkien Mee is black in colour with thick yellow noodles. Btw the Nasi Kandar should have had mixed gravy and some more vegetables. Should try again at Hameediyah's Nasi Kandar. Theirs is much more authentic.
@@2Passports1Dream No worries. Btw do try Char Kuey Teow also. It a rice noodle dish that originates from Penang and the best ones can be found in Penang too!
Yes correct in selangor / kl we named it prawn noodles. But in penang they called it hokkien noodles. But the confusion starts here. In kl or selangor hokkien noodles are dark soy and light soy sauce with pork lard, vege, fish cake, prawns, meat.
I personally like to eat my ABC unmixed because mixing makes the ice melt faster and I also like it when every scoop you take from a different side of an unmixed ABC is a different taste with different ingredients being scooped. 😋
@@2Passports1Dream Yeah it has been really hot lately, so maybe that's why the ABC melted so quickly. Since you guys have a sweet tooth, you can try this dessert called Muah Chee. Try sliding the straw while you suck. Also after it seems like the drink is over, go back ot it a few minutes later after the ice has melted a bit and you get a bonus refreshing icey milky goodness to cleanse your month.
My favorite food in Georgetown is rojak, at 101 Rojak place. Using your hand to eat enhances the flavor, so go for it, that is the right way. Just remember you can only use your right hand, never the left one.
If you plan to stay longer in Malaysia, I recommend you visit Terengganu too😁🤙...you can try nasi dagang, keropok lekor(fish crackers),satar, and celup tepung. "Celup tepung" is a fried food that is dipped into flour to get a crunchy texture, it comes in 3 types of food options namely fish, squid, and shrimp.
Also i suggest if you want visit johor you must try goreng pisang=banana fried with sambal kicap only have in johor with sambal kicap, another state don't have this😋its very delicious or you can eat pisang goreng cheese= banana fried cheese,in johor best food is asam pedas(is very spicy compare to another state in Malaysia .

Chandol from the indian people. Ice kacang chinese. In a malay stall ABC :- Ais Batu Campur. And if you see ABC soup. An ABC soup recipe is Asian and very common in Malaysian and Chinese cuisines. ABC soup stands for vitamins A, B & C from carrots, potatoes and tomatoes.

In Penang you should try to order Pat Poh Ping or Pat Poh Nai Ping (with Milk). It is something only in Penang. Its basically think herbal syrup made into a beverage. PING is basically Ice.
Everything looked very interesting. But, the one thing that caught my eye particularly was the assam laksa because it's the only dish of the ones you showcased that I've had. And, it was fairly recent as I ate it for a video that I filmed. And, I couldn't help but compare. Mine was completely different. The broth was only slightly sour; and, it featured tuna. It didn't have pineapple in it but slivers of cucumber. It was fishy; and, that was the dominant flavor. Plus, the noodles were not thick but very thin. Thin rice noodles.
Was it a Penang dish? Apparently they can vary soooo much depending on the area that they are made in! This one is known for being rather sour, for example!
@@2Passports1Dream The assam laksa that I got was from a restaurant here in the U.S. And, it identified the laksa as being Penang style. I think the difference is simply due to the fact that Malaysian food overseas is bound to be different than that from the source (i.e., Penang itself). Anyway, thanks for the video. Safe travels and keep up the good work.
Finally you tried Ice Kacang (ABC)! Actually this is the Penang version of it, that actually has "atap chi" (Atap palm fruit) that is usually pickled with sugar that gives a twist other States of Malaysia don't have. In the 80s the primary school kids even learned the song of Ice-Kacang. 😂 that is how famous it is as a local ice-shaved dessert. I think the one you had is rootbeer with rose syrup. In Perak they usually use gula Melaka + rose syrup as the mix. The look alike but taste slightly different. If you see green ones they are usually cendol. Sometimes comes in bright pink. Ice-Kacang is meant to have it "sloppy" to the point you can even drink the dessert up, just like Ramly burger the famous "sloppy joe". And yes, Asam Laksa (of different types from different states), one of the main ingredient is pineapple. By the way, many Malaysians (probably because of Asam Laksa) actually do not mind the "Hawaian pizza" that is pizza with pineapple on it haha.
Not far from that cendol stall you're having there's an uncle selling roasted chestnuts. down the alley from the roasted chestnuts there's a couple more stalls & restaurant selling nasi padang, roti bakar (toasted bread), cucur udang (prawn fritters of some sort), and fried fruit fritters such as banana, sweet potato etc

Hi, guys. Never been to Penang since 2018. Will plan vacation in future after October. Enjoy your time there. Who knows, you might meet western tourist vloggers who were already in Malaysia, maybe even from your own country.
Hi hi, FYI< the prawn noodle (vermicilli) best eaten hot (+ a special sambal sauce, if available there) to avoid being soggy when left idle just for few minutes
Yet another super interesting and yummy food tour, and so nice to see a little bit of the city as well.>The hokkien mee looked awesome; and he desserts are so different from what you're used to! Great filming! The guy spooning up the chendol is epic 💦💦
that nasi kandar looks so sad lol. as someone pointed out, queue up at the food counter - choose your rice - white/biryani - choose whatever u want to eat - proteins, vege, etc - MIX ALL THE GRAVY :D just tell them "kuah/kari campur" (pronounced 'coo-ah/curry chumpur') and get yourself a nice delicious plate of nasi kandar - don't forget the pappadoms
Great videos 👍 I usually don’t chewing my food and one day I went into emergency operating room to remove fish bone stuck in my throat.Enjoy Penang Salute 🙏
The first thing u did right with the Hokkien Mee or they call it Prawn noodle is to finish the soup at the very end. The correct way to eat the noodle is to scoop the soup and noodle in soup spoon and eat it together. Same goes with Laksa, prawn noodle, curry noodle etc. The broth is the soul of every noodle in Penang food that's why the hawker seller don't serve u extra soup(if u notice). Not many Malaysian know this except Penangite. For Nasi kandar, u can try to tell them 'kuah dulu' means mix all the curry sauce in the rice before u choose any dishes(if u like your rice full of curry flavour then u should give it a try). Wish u guys have a nice trip in Malaysia.
I am very happy to see most of your videos, some of it I watched twice....cant wait to see your perhentian trip...hopefully you have a wonderful day...
Nice video. Next time go to Kayu Nasi kandar in Bukit Jambul. Get the fried chicken. Ask them to dipped it in kuah madu. Put veggie which is fried cabbage. Then ask them KUAH CAMPUR. they will mixed all the curry together. This is my favourite way to eat nasi kandar in Kayu Nasi kandar. It's really tasty and I will not miss this dish whenever Im in Penang. Try it if you have the opportunity later. Hope u guys have a nice time in Malaysia and please come back.
Nasi Kandar taste best with Kua Campur (Mix Gravy). Teh Tarik are better from Muslim vendors where they really "Tarik" (Pull) the Tea and that's why you get bubble's when it's being served to you.
Nasi kandar place you must try: Hameediyah or Deen Maju. The best protein to go with it is Ayam Bawang (onion chicken) and Daging Hitam (black beef). Must ask for kuah campur, thats what makes it a real nasi kandar. Enjoy!
great video! ais kacang( ka- chang) needs to be eaten quickly here bcos of the heat 😄 we need to continuously mix- scoop- eat- repeat before the ice melts and overflows. you could try mixing it by scooping fr outside & folding it in.. but gently.. agree with you- dont prefer sarsi/ root beer syrup in my ABC
Heheh definitely is a quick one to eat before it overflows 😂 it’s so hot so it melts fast!! It was tasty but would probably prefer it with it the syrup next time!
Hello Usually when we eat nasi kandar you mixed 5 to 7 gravy together with the rice. Not on individual plate. Once you get all the curries on the rice than choose your protein and vegtable. Remember Nasi Kandar the gravy/ curries are mixed atleast 5 types of them . You eat it the wrong way. Pelita is overated. You can go to Hamideeyah or Deen Nasi Kandar. Most famous is Line Clear Nasi Kandar but too pricey. Should also try roti canai Jalan transfer for breakfast
When you have a bowl of curry with or without meat, you do not pour the whole curry on top of the rice. You scoop on the rice as you eat. Same for the meat.
Glad you guys give all those famous Penang famous hawker foods a try, the prawn noodle looks good and inside asam laksa is shallot, mint leaf, cucumber, pineapple, kampung fish meat and you shall mix in the black prawn sauce it will make the soup little sweeter but not like sugar sweet it’s more like seafood sweet. Yeah different places serve cendol slightly different but i personally still prefer Melaka cendol as their gula Melaka are more fragrant. ABC are another local favourite cooling desert as Malaysia weather are hot so we love to eat those ice dessert haha 😂 enjoy your stay in Penang and there are plenty more famous foods to try. Tambun biscuit are pretty good too as we usually buy few boxes for family and friends back in KL or other states after a holiday in Penang

Malaysians food are authentic and traditionally asians. You can tell by its rich flavors and spices that scream hundreds if not thousand of years of traditions. But never underestimate Malaysians fusion foods, which are combined mixes of malays, indian and chinese influences that are not even available outside Malaysia or Singapore. Examples, roti canai and variants, bak kut teh, teh tarik, cendol, laksa, kaya toast, char kuey teow etc are unique to Malaysia.
real ais kacang dont hv that root beer stuff in it... u should find another one... the base should be ice, red rose syrup, and some evaporated milk....

From Chicken Hor Fun, Beansprout (taugeh) Chicken rice/hor fun, nasi ganja ipoh, Funny mountain tau foo fah (beancurd) dessert, Ipoh dry curry noodles from Restoran Chuan Fatt, Restoran Yee Fatt, Hainan Pork/Chicken chop rice from Cathay Restaurant; Ipoh White Coffee from Ipoh old town namely Sin Yin Loong, Nam Heong, Thean Chun etc (uniquely from Ipoh); Ipoh dim sum for breakfast from many great places like Ming Court, Fu Shan, Canning Dim Sum; Tambun Pomelo (fruit uniquely from Ipoh); Yong Tau Foo Under The Tree (crazy variety of mixed stuffs with fish paste; Cathay mee goreng (different from the pork/chicken chop with the same name), peanut candy, kaya puff, egg tarts, egg custard, etc are all famous and crazily delicious! The Cendol you eat in Melaka is not the original. There are others in Melaka that are as simple as this chedol in Penang. This one is the common one which you can get in Melaka or anywhere in Malaysia.
You guys should come to Borneo Island, another part of Malaysia. We have tonnes of nice food and fruits here which can't be found in Peninsula Malaysia. As well more beautiful places to be visited.
The basic Cendol is Green Noodles + Coconut Milk + Gula Melaka + Shaved Ice. Any more is over and above. Some times the additional is bordering on blasphemy... imho.. 😊😊😊 too much more and it is Air Batu Campur (ABC)
Also not forgetting dim sum (breakfast) in penang. Might be a little pricey about rm 28 per person(including tea) but you will not regret it at least. It is just something many people will forget when eating good food in penang as they tend to focus on cheaper food.

Oh thanks for the suggestions! Haha good to know it’s meant to be sloppy… it definitely became it 😂😅 just like the ramly burger haha!
Great, now i'm hungry again (and I just had lunch )
Thanks for the vid. I'll be sure to check some of these venues when there.
Hahah!! It was all so yummy! Definitely do 😍🤗
Not far from that cendol stall you're having there's an uncle selling roasted chestnuts. down the alley from the roasted chestnuts there's a couple more stalls & restaurant selling nasi padang, roti bakar (toasted bread), cucur udang (prawn fritters of some sort), and fried fruit fritters such as banana, sweet potato etc
We saw so many roasted chestnuts!! We normally have them at Christmas time hehe 😅 Thank you for all the recommendations!
@@2Passports1Dream hehehe 😅😅anyhow do enjoy Penang. There's a whole loads type of food there. Another one of my favorite is called Rojak Buah, and I frequent a stall at a place called Gurney Drive and the stall name is G.P Soon. There's also other stalls there that sells varieties of local delicacies be it by malay chinese or indian 😍
Hi, guys. Never been to Penang since 2018. Will plan vacation in future after October. Enjoy your time there. Who knows, you might meet western tourist vloggers who were already in Malaysia, maybe even from your own country.
Hehehe yeah probably! 🤗
Hi hi, FYI< the prawn noodle (vermicilli) best eaten hot (+ a special sambal sauce, if available there) to avoid being soggy when left idle just for few minutes
Ooooh I see! 😍 It was soooo yummy
@23:07 it is Grass Jelly, locals calls in cincau in the South and Lengkong in the North. Your 'Sarsi' could be gula Melaka or palm sugar.
Food is delicious 😋 love your videos ❤️❤️
Thank you so much!! 🤗🤗
Yet another super interesting and yummy food tour, and so nice to see a little bit of the city as well.>The hokkien mee looked awesome; and he desserts are so different from what you're used to! Great filming! The guy spooning up the chendol is epic 💦💦
Thank you so much!! The food was absolutely amazing - we would have the hokkien mee again in a heartbeat! ❤️❤️
The original cendol is this one...quite runny....the one in Malacca is the upgraded one I guess.....,..in Penang ,they called it ice kacang for cendol
Oh interesting!! Both were tasty but so different from eachother!
The ice kacang dessert used Sarsi syrup (similar taste to root beer) as the base
Ohhhhh I see!! That makes sense 🤗🤗
that nasi kandar looks so sad lol. as someone pointed out, queue up at the food counter
- choose your rice - white/biryani
- choose whatever u want to eat - proteins, vege, etc
- MIX ALL THE GRAVY :D just tell them "kuah/kari campur" (pronounced 'coo-ah/curry chumpur') and get yourself a nice delicious plate of nasi kandar
- don't forget the pappadoms
Woops. We got it wrong again 😂
Great videos 👍 I usually don’t chewing my food and one day I went into emergency operating room to remove fish bone stuck in my throat.Enjoy Penang
Salute 🙏
Oh wow that sounds really dangerous! I’m always trying to tell Dylan to chew more 😅😅
The first thing u did right with the Hokkien Mee or they call it Prawn noodle is to finish the soup at the very end.
Oh great!! Thank you so much 😍🤗
Love your editing, nice drone footage.keep up the great work 👍
Much appreciated! Thank you!
cool selection of food! It looked awesome!
Thank you so much 🤗
Just wanted to say love watching u make it fun and the food did look so good thank you have fun
Hehe thank you so much! All the food was awesome 🤗😍
I am very happy to see most of your videos, some of it I watched twice....cant wait to see your perhentian trip...hopefully you have a wonderful day...
Oh wow thank you so much!!! 🤗
Thanks another great vlog from my favourites
Thank you 🤗🤗
1:40 "Teh" pronounce is origin from Hokkien province dialect, and most china tea was export and plant in Hokkien before it start plant globally.
Great video guys!!! Hello from Australia Perth
Thank you❤️
Hello!! Thanks for watching 😍🤗
I love the cendol. Once we got there just as it was opening, and we got first dibs. soo niceeee.
Oh cool!! It’s so tasty 😍
Both of you pronounciation is marvellous.. good job guys
Oh thank you so much! 🤗🤗
Oh sounds great! Thank you! We hope to come back some time 😍
Nasi Kandar taste best with Kua Campur (Mix Gravy). Teh Tarik are better from Muslim vendors where they really "Tarik" (Pull) the Tea and that's why you get bubble's when it's being served to you.
Oh I see! Thanks for letting us know 😍🤗
hi, you can check ichang rm nasi kandar video, how to order nasi kandar like a pro. but for sure the price will be more than usd2
Aha thanks for the recommendation! 🤗
Nasi kandar place you must try: Hameediyah or Deen Maju. The best protein to go with it is Ayam Bawang (onion chicken) and Daging Hitam (black beef). Must ask for kuah campur, thats what makes it a real nasi kandar. Enjoy!
Thank you for the recommendation! 🤗🤗
WAH... damn soooooo Envious of you two.. tasting alll those dishes, drinks and sweets... made me Cry.... awesome video, safe travels...
Hehe thank you so much! Everything was soooo tasty! 😍
For nasi kandar you can ask for kuah campur (mixed gravy) to full enjoy it.
Oh I see! Thank you!
great video! ais kacang( ka- chang) needs to be eaten quickly here bcos of the heat 😄 we need to continuously mix- scoop- eat- repeat before the ice melts and overflows. you could try mixing it by scooping fr outside & folding it in.. but gently.. agree with you- dont prefer sarsi/ root beer syrup in my ABC
Heheh definitely is a quick one to eat before it overflows 😂 it’s so hot so it melts fast!! It was tasty but would probably prefer it with it the syrup next time!
@@2Passports1Dream totally agree wiith you! im sure u guys will find an original palm sugar syrup ABC soon.. enjoy yr stay & God bless!
Hello
Usually when we eat nasi kandar you mixed 5 to 7 gravy together with the rice.
Wow no way!! Hehe sounds awesome 😍😍
When you have a bowl of curry with or without meat, you do not pour the whole curry on top of the rice. You scoop on the rice as you eat. Same for the meat.
For authentic asam laksa, there is a market in air itam near kek lok si temple. Can try that. I heard the late anthony bourdain ate there.
Hehe it was absolutely amazing - after a long hot day the ABC was so good! 😍 We love trying all the new foods! 😍🤗
You should try the authentic nasi kandar where the rice is supposed to be bathed in lots of different curry sauces and your choice of side dishes.
Yea it's a shame because we really wanted to try the real thing!
[kan.dar] | کندر

Oh interesting! Thank you 🤗🤗
😱😱... That's not nasi kandar. Shld try it again at another place mentioned by others. The real one is gonna messy but definitely delicious. Hope you'll able to try one.. Enjoy the rest of yr stay in Penang 😘
Okay!! Thank you for letting us know - we will have to try it again 😅🤗
So many amazing foods 😍🤗 we really enjoy it!
the green drink is sour plum.... the super green drink is a type of lime.
the best way to eat nasi kandar is for you guys to ask for kuah campur which translate to mixed gravy. then you can enjoy nasi kandar better
Oh I see! Thank you 🤗🤗
For nasi kandar, Hameediyah or Deen Maju is a good place to start but long queues, especially on the weekend
Oh thank you for the suggestion!
Wow PENANG ❤️❤️, looks beautiful and of course the food 😋. 😊👏👏
So good
real ais kacang dont hv that root beer stuff in it... u should find another one... the base should be ice, red rose syrup, and some evaporated milk....
Oh I see!! Hehe we will need to try it again 😍🤗
Nasi kandar is all about mixing. Next time ask for "kuah campur" it means mix gravy. you're welcome 😉
Thank you!! 🤗🤗
Your next place should be IPOH, the other Malaysia food haven. From Chicken Hor Fun, Beansprout (taugeh) Chicken rice/hor fun, nasi ganja ipoh, Funny mountain tau foo fah (beancurd) dessert, Ipoh dry curry noodles from Restoran Chuan Fatt, Restoran Yee Fatt, Hainan Pork/Chicken chop rice from Cathay Restaurant; Ipoh White Coffee from Ipoh old town namely Sin Yin Loong, Nam Heong, Thean Chun etc (uniquely from Ipoh); Ipoh dim sum for breakfast from many great places like Ming Court, Fu Shan, Canning Dim Sum; Tambun Pomelo (fruit uniquely from Ipoh); Yong Tau Foo Under The Tree (crazy variety of mixed stuffs with fish paste; Cathay mee goreng (different from the pork/chicken chop with the same name), peanut candy, kaya puff, egg tarts, egg custard, etc are all famous and crazily delicious! Most of all these (except dim sum and beansprout chicken) if not all could be had for less than USD2!
We would love to go there! Thank na so much for all the awesome recommendations 🤗
Hi, very nicely filmed video, would like to ask what camera are you using to video? as it looks really stabilized and would you recommend it?
Hello! We use Sony a7c then use the software that comes with it to stabilise all the footage - it’s great!
@@2Passports1Dream thanks for the info, once again great job 👍🏻
I love to retire in Penang! Love the prices and food!
Terimakasih
We could watch you both all the time and never get tired of it haha 🤗. All of the food (and drinks) looked great but that fish paste noodle soup (can't spell the name and not butcher it) looks sooooo good 😍. Keep sharing withe the world you two 🤗❤
Thank you so much guys ❤️😍 would be even nicer if it was shared with you two (althoigh let’s be honest dessert isn’t for sharing - everyone needs their own! 😂) ❤️

Wow so many different things to try 😍😍
The Cendol you eat in Melaka is not the original. There are others in Melaka that are as simple as this chedol in Penang. This one is the common one which you can get in Melaka or anywhere in Malaysia.
Wow nice place Love from India 🇮🇳
😍🤗
Everything looks so yummy 🙏🙏
Hah it was!!
Both of you got elastik stomach still continue hunting delicious food at every corner of george town this is my home town.
Hahaha we try to put in as much as we can 😂😂
You guys should come to Borneo Island, another part of Malaysia. We have tonnes of nice food and fruits here which can't be found in Peninsula Malaysia. As well more beautiful places to be visited.
We will one day 🙌
Great video! Please try Deen Maju nasi kandar at Jalan Gurdwara☺
Hehe there’s so much food to try everywhere 😍
The basic Cendol is Green Noodles + Coconut Milk + Gula Melaka + Shaved Ice. Any more is over and above. Some times the additional is bordering on blasphemy... imho.. 😊😊😊 too much more and it is Air Batu Campur (ABC)
Hahahah the original cendol we had in Penang sounds the closest to the original!! The ABC we had was also pretty epic!
Laksa gravy made from mackerel(Rastrelliger).
Oh interesting!!
ambala sour plum drink.
There are a lot of good Nasi Kandar in Penang Island, The nasi kandar should be mixed all into your rice plate.
The sour plum drink was fantastic!! 😍😍😍
To mix or not to mix is a personal choice I guess! I don't like mixing my food hahah. Hope you all enjoyed the trip in Penang!
Hehehe there’s no right or wrong way!
Anywhere you go for Tea Tarik in Malaysia, please don't forget to tell them less sugar " Kurang Manis" .
We like it sweet 😍😍
@@2Passports1Dream Now i know why you guys look so sweet all the time 😂
Hehehe 🤗🤗
ABC = Ice Peanut Mix (Ais Kacang Campur)
Hopefully you will visit Kuching East Malaysia Sarawak n enjoy d food too . Sarawak is famous for it's Laksa Sarawak, kolok Mee n many more.....🤗👍🍜
Also not forgetting dim sum (breakfast) in penang. Might be a little pricey about rm 28 per person(including tea) but you will not regret it at least. It is just something many people will forget when eating good food in penang as they tend to focus on cheaper food.
Oh yes so many delicious things! We love trying so many new foods 😍😍
@@2Passports1Dream dim sum in cantonese means 'touched the heart'. Something like that.
Oh wow that’s so lovely!!
Hi guys, will you continue to focus on the food market? There are so many in this place already.. I’d love to know more about the places than just time food
We usually like to take a food centered approach to most places that we visit, along other things!! 🤗🤗
Yup chendol taste different as there are Chinese, Malay and Indian version. So far in your post the KL and Melaka is Malay version and the Penang one is Chinese.
Oh interesting!! Thanks 🤗
kandar comes from the urdu/hindi word kandah
kandah means shoulder.
so basically nasi kandar refers to rice carried on shoulders.
Thank you!
hi, since you guys at the north, i would recommend you visit ipoh and cameron highland
