Hi Ed, I am doing the same job on my M62TU and I had to make a tool to hold the crank pulley so I can safely remove the "Jesus" crankshaft bolt. I didn't want to use an impact in my case. I have a video about it-Part 40 video. Keep up the good work mate.
hello again i have a 728i it runs perfect .but when i first start the car and put my foot on the break , then press the button to move the gear shifter . its hard to get out of park into reverse then pull down to drive its sticky .i use to move it with one finger a while ago .
@@The777Garage whats the plasic bit underneath the plastic bit is that the that the panel underneath the gear knob is it the swich on the the gear lever. my gear knob is big and wood ,its a 1999 728i .
Do you have the video following where you stopped? I'm about to do chains and guides on my m62 (pre vanos) and haven't found alot of info on using the chain tensioner block, torque specs, etc. also my chains that connect the cams has a bad tensioner so I'll be doing those as well
I'm looking at doing the same on my 735i m62Tu. How reliable are those cheap timing tool sets, are they precise, as I've heard setting the timing on these engines is pretty tough, if not done with proper tools? Any special brand of the cheap tools to buy? Did you manage to time it with the tools on first try?
Hi!they actually not that bad… there is no specific brand have i used but they are in the blue box sells £70-80 I personally didn’t had issues..i had sometimes vanos control fault but not sure if it was vanos itself or timing
Hi Mate! Can you tell me is that true, cuz Im confused and dont know what to do with my e38? Some people say that, after rebuilt the vanos system on m62 engine, ,,the thicking noise'' dont stop, or stop but just for a short time. After searching internet, I found out, that the oem gaskets reacts with engine oil, and the best way is to buy aftermarket gaskets from independent company, there are made from different material, and that fix the problem. What is your point of view ?
Mine will be done as well. My 3.5 m62tu started to rattle last saturday. He is now at the shop. Do you have advice for other parts to get replaced while changing the guides? The vanos for example? Its a 1999 with 230.000 km/ +-140.000 miles miles
G'Day, I am in Cairns (FNQ Australia), had the timing chain tensioner replaced, still makes the noise intermittently ...so decided to bite the bullet ... there is no way I can come to you, but I would appreciate your suggestions on the components to replace ... if you come to OZ, I'll buy you a beer of three ... (the car has about 300,000 kilometres on it, but like most E38 Owners, I love the car. I thought the water pump and clutch fan as well ... thanks
I timed mine and bank 1-4 vanos jumped clock wise after removing the cam lock. When I spun the motor by the crank bank 5-8 vanos jumped on first 1/8th of a turn. Did your do that too?
@@The777Garage too bad you're not in california. I have a 2001 740il with a bad timing chain and no one seems to be able to help. Im even considering buying a new engine and mechanics etc just leave me hanging. Smh
1st cylinder at tdc..lock the flywheel at the back of the engine (there’s hole between gearbox and engine) Camshafts should be facing upwards with numbers and letters on the end..lock them up using special tool and u good to go to remove chain
@@The777Garage so after I’ve locked the engine at the tdc, I can remove the cam sprocket and the cam sensor wheel, is there anything that I have to look out for when I’m assembling it back together?
If you have this error AFTER timing job its not ok, propably the locks were badly set. Sorry for my english ;) you need to take off head covers, set the engine in O/T And check if its set correctly. You dont need any special locks to check it.
The guides get destroyed when the tensioner becomes slack over time. As long as the tensioner is maintained along with regular oil changes the guides should last, they are then only dealing with friction not chain thrashing caused by a slack chain.
You’re good mechanic for giving an estimated cost of the job!
Cool! Thanks for posting this! It's good to know people still have an interest in these older BMWs!

Sounds like actuator which located underneath the plastic is bit dogy..cause when u press brake that actuator lifts locking pin for u to select gears

So mine pop up check timing guide chains and I’m not sure if that’s leaking from where I think this video helps but I’m not sure 😂😂
Start stripping to see 😃
can u give a link for the timing tool??

To be honest I didn’t use tensioner block..used cable tie and worked as good and less hassle

How much does a job like this cost?
I have an L322RR w/ M62
Where can I rent the special tools for a timing chain job on my 99 bmw 540o
540i
Want to come to USA in Montana n do mine
Special tools now are $100 so I guess if u bought them u would still save tons of money on labour
At what milage did the chain guides break on this one ?
Have an 02 540I with about 100 k :)
About 140ish k
Can be driven if the chain is loose? Thanks
Literally just to move it..but obviously better not
