The story of the production of The Hobbit is that Del Toro had wanted to do the Hobbit for a long time and was told he could do it his way. The company that had the rights to the license was financially strained tho so they had to bring in alot of investors and give them alot of power over the project (Weinstein being one of them). After a year of production the execs got cold feet because Del Toro's vision was very different in tone to the ring trilogy and they were afraid it wouldnt make as much money as it potentially could. So they tried to meddle and Del Toro was either fired or left on his own (until nda's expire we probably wont know). The movie was at this point still produced in New Zealand but as there was no director to combat anymore the execs wanted to move production to eastern europe where movie workers rights were less developed. To prevent this Jackson came in and said he would direct if production was kept in New Zealand. He was emotionally and physically drained after the last trilogy and really didnt look forward to it but did it out of an obligation to both New Zealand and the world wide fans. Del Toro's preproduction was scrapped so they had none of the prep time they had with the original trilogy. Alot of crucial design decisions were made on the fly. They hadnt even decided how many legs Smaug should have AFTER he appeared in the first movie. It was also stretched to 3 movies because the contracts with the investors only entitled them to profits from the first movie so the production company wanted more money for themselves. This is why the pacing is way off. Execs were also afraid that Bilbo and Thorin's friendship would be interpreted and memed online as 'gay' (as Frodo and Sam had) so they demanded that their scenes were to be shortened and a female love interest would be shoehorned in to make the movie less 'gay'. Evangeline Lilly was already cast on the premise that she WOULDNT be part of a love triangle, so that was changed. This also meant that during production less and less scenes focused on the dwarves as the script deviated from Jacksons original. And this is only the short version. Now after the fact its obvious that a potentially great project was destroyed by greed. I really recommend watching documentaries about the whole debacle and let it stand as a prime example of how not to treat a franchise.
I remember when Warner and Peter Jackson threatened to pull production from NZ due to a union dispute, so the conservative government rushed in new laws to cripple the local creative arts unions and to provide funding to big budget foreign films. It was later revealed that the unions and Warner Bros had reached an agreement, but both the government and studios kept quiet, evidently to sow the seeds of public panic and hysteria, which allowed them to move forward with their end goal of union breaking. Everybody forgets THAT.
@@ffnbbq Actually Jackson was never for moving production but knew that if the New Zealand actors union got what they wanted then he would be powerless to stop Warner from doing it. The actors union was specifically trying to hold The hobbit hostage as a stunt to attract attention. You could say he had no choice but to get involved. The choices he had, as he saw them, was to either attack movie workers proposed extended right to unionize or see thousands of jobs be lost to other countries. Basically removing what actually attracted movie companies to NZ from the beginning (cheaper labour). I wont say I agree with union supression in general but the consequences he feared has happened before in other industries and countries.

If any of you are reading this comment out in the ether somewhere, I beg you to find this film. It's Top 5 for me!
It's a good thing those Artificial Eye DVDs came in plastic sleeves - it means you've been saved the grief of their annoying DVD case spines that read bottom to top as opposed to top to bottom like every other DVD/Blu-Ray in the world, thus sticking out like a sore thumb and making your collection look all untidy. Seriously - all spines on all media read top to bottom. Why would you change that Artificial Eye? Just so you could be different? Gah!
Many of my friends have Big Bang Theory on their TV like some kind of twisted default screensaver when I visit them. They look at it randomly chuckling under their breath like freakish automatons. They must all hate me so badly.
The plot was weak, but at least there was some actual assassinating going on, the sequel just went wildly off the rails with that bulletproof guy etc. Neither of them really captured the essence of Hitman games that well.
The Hobbit also didn't have enough source material to make a trilogy. Sorry for the random rant. The Hobbit deserved a better adaption...and I say this as a huge LOTR fan. Edit: The addition of Chef Excellence would have greatly improved The Hobbit

Here's a rough idea of why this video type is popular, Stuart: Google would have you believe that most viewers of a channel only watch a video if it's less than 15mins long and then just click something else like a low-attention span 5 year old. A good chunk of us though like to put on videos while we're doing something else; think of the people who binge-watch Netflix shows. More often than not, they're not actually watching the show, just letting it play. Long videos like this, with this inexorably "dull" content, are PERFECT for that kind of viewer. For instance, I like to just set your videos on autoplay shuffle sometimes while i'm playing games that don't require any real thought, like grinding in a JRPG. So yeah, there IS a reason these videos work. Please keep doing them.
Seriously I swear I hear "oh I'm doing a long video, nobody's going to watch this" from a lot of UA-cam content producers... but 20-30 minute videos just make sense, the average TV show is around 22-45 minutes long, after all. I'll take anything lengthy I can play while working, doing chores, working out, drawing or playing games.
Absolutely. I can't tell you how many times i've watched Red Letter Media's 'Best of the Worst' playlist; it's something I can just push play and have it going when i'm cooking or anything. I love long videos. I admit I can't watch them at work or on the go, but when i'm home? Fuck yeah i'm gonna watch/listen to super long videos.
Well I actually pay full attention to the videos and his dry humor is great as well as his critiques and it's just interesting. Although I do think it would go well for something in the background also.

The "Holy Motors" DVD includes the name Edith Scob. She's notable for her portrayal of the disfigured Christiane in George Franju's incredible horror film Les Yeux Sans Visage (Eyes Without a Face.) If any of you are reading this comment out in the ether somewhere, I beg you to find this film. It's Top 5 for me!
Steven Krage - I agree. ‘Eyes’ is a great film.
I love these. I'm not sure why, but I love seeing people find terrible things.
Gah!
PixelBro64 - You are so right my friend!
I feel like buying these are only good for some kind of weird arts and crafts projects involving dvds
like a suit of armour made of inferior physical data format, or tacky coasters
Just saw you on the new Beast Intersection video, now here. Man, you're everywhere (then again, so would I be, but nobody recognizes me)
That damn Aussie lady from stealy shoot game in some sex drawing has come to haunt me from the Vinny streams.
I have the exact same reaction to Big Bang Theory!
Justin Wagman I specifically came to the comments to say the exact same thing 👍🏻
Many of my friends have Big Bang Theory on their TV like some kind of twisted default screensaver when I visit them. They look at it randomly chuckling under their breath like freakish automatons. They must all hate me so badly.
The IT Crowd is slightly older than Big Bang Theory and it's actually funny.
Justin Wagman Same here man. I can’t stand that load of dogshite.
immediate thumbs up without seeing rest of vid
Seeing all this makes me miss the CEX we had in NYC. Man, I got a lot of good movies from there for real cheap.
I don't know why but the fact that Ashens doesn't like Karl Pilkington makes me a bit sad
He was funny, but his "act" got old fast.
Really could never get into him. Felt left out 😂
@@sperrin There is no "act"
Steve Perrin - If you heard him on XFM you would know its not an act.
The best part of my day is watching a man on UA-cam look through a lot of used DVDs.
He was actually a really good Agent 47, I kinda wish they'd had him return for the second movie.
100% I thought the first film was really good
Agree, I thought the first movie was very underrated.
The plot was weak, but at least there was some actual assassinating going on, the sequel just went wildly off the rails with that bulletproof guy etc. Neither of them really captured the essence of Hitman games that well.
As a French person, I'm shocked at all those 18 rated films that would struggle to get a 12+ rating over here.
The Hobbit might have had a dragon, but they didn’t have Chef Excellence!
The Hobbit also didn't have enough source material to make a trilogy.
Sorry for the random rant. The Hobbit deserved a better adaption...and I say this as a huge LOTR fan.
Edit: The addition of Chef Excellence would have greatly improved The Hobbit
Funny enough, Return to Neverland was a theater release.
Roy Chubby Brown, Jesus wept
23:08 I have a soft spot for Return of Jafar. It was the first VHS tape I owned. A couple of years ago I've rewatched it and yeah, the movie mostly sucks. But some songs are admirable and I quite like the character of Abys Mal, who's so comically greedy you can't help but smile.
Gets to the tappy feet one
Speaking of witch dont know if it would fit the channel but i would love to see ashens movie rifs or something along the lines of that could be funny. What do the rest of you think?
Just recently saw his collab with Diamanda on an obscure Bali horror movie. It was indeed quite amusing.
You could try the Sequelisers podcast if you haven't heard of it. Ashens is in that too and they come up with better stories for bad sequels.
Ashens commentating with one of his friends over one of those terrible but hilarious public domain schlock movies, or doing a rifftrax style thing would be amazing.
If it was done in the same style as MST3000 I would be interested.
Clearly Captain Hook allied with the Master Control Program, confirming the existence of a Disney Shared Universe. 😛
Good joke!
I want a follow up episode where you do reviews of the ones you watch, like your 10 reviews in 10 minutes but with films.
Oh dang, Scamper the Penguin was a major part of my childhood. I had it on vhs in the very early 90s. So I guess they’ve redone it as a rip-off now, shame.
Basil Lecher it looks like the original movie just brought to new formats? The movie has quite the history apparently... Look up Lolo the Penguin
You hate Big Bang Theory as much as I do, it warms my heart.
Frankenweenie brought tears to my eyes at the end, it made me think of my first dog.
Edgelord, hate as its popular. I bet you never watched it but took some idiot comment of the internet and thought, YES I will adopt that to be different, and maybe cool.
Azurae Lyonheart as someone who’s watch it, it’s bad. Really fucking bad, the worst of modern sitcoms put together.
Just because someone doesn’t like it doesn’t mean they haven’t watched it.
Glad you decided to make more I love these
Here's a rough idea of why this video type is popular, Stuart:
Google would have you believe that most viewers of a channel only watch a video if it's less than 15mins long and then just click something else like a low-attention span 5 year old.
I actually fall asleep to these long ashens videos as I find his voice quite soothing, actually.
Duel to the Death is fantastic. Highly, highly underrated martial arts film. I recommend it to anyone even remotely curious about it.
I don't know why I like these so much but I do
The town in The League of Gentlemen is called Royston Vasey, which is the real name of Roy 'Chubby' Brown.
I'm sure a lot of you will know that...but still.
Changing the title of Scamper the Penguin will not change its misunderstood greatness.
IKMNification
Actually it was originally titled Adventures Of Lolo the Penguin.
So the title you’re mentioning is a title that’s a retitle.
@@crystalvoodoo91 🤯
Perfect way to end the evening, especially since Stuart finally uploaded at a reasonable time.
8:16 it says that South Park is in the children genre.
Maybe that's why he threw the DVD away.
@@IvanovIvanAKrutoi I think he threw it away just because he doesn't like South Park very much.
@@JaredGriffiths2000 Nah, it’s because A). He’s not really interested and B). Even if he was, he would need more than a random slider containing a few random episodes! He’s mentioned this before!
@@IvanovIvanAKrutoi What you said for "A" is kind of the same as what I said.
These are relaxing to watch. Also, shifting through DVDs is sort of a thing of the past. It's fun to see what random thing you will find.
I am nearly 100% sure that that "Tappy feet" film is actually just a renamed version of a older(90's) animated film that I had growing up
Insidious will always hold a special place in my heart as the last memorable advertisement I saw online before I got a virus from a youtube ad and locked my computer down with adblock, making a blood pact to never turn it off again.
I thought Dexter was about 10 episodes a season and no filler? Its really good. 'Lost', now that was all filler!
Never thought I'd see these type of videos again, since 'That's Entertainment' stores in the UK went bankrupt and closed down. I'm gonna enjoy this! :D
I don’t know why I enjoy these so much. And maybe give an idiot abroad another chance, it’s bloody good. Or the moaning of life, his other show, you might like that one better actually.
LoveFilm never went bust - Amazon bought them out and retained the name for the postal DVD side of the business until they eventually stopped it, which was only October 2017.
21:54 you joke but every sodding thing in the halo series is some kind of bible reference
This is probably my favorite type of videos you make.
I would LOVE if Ashens started reviewing animated knockoff films!
Madagascar 3 has some genuinely gorgeous animation, specifically during the circus scene.
i just went on ebay and bought myself a box of these...it's my birthday next week, I can justify it lol
happy almost birthday! :D
brutalbunny thank you 😊
I had completely forgot Jada Pinkett Smith and Chris Rock were in the Madagascar series together! Oh ho boy!
Nah don’t like Jack Whitehall, he seems like he’s aimed at making the younger middle class “Made in Chelsea” type get their hardy-ha’s
alvstar1984 Gaming he's amazing in Fresh Meat.
Watch bad education its hilarious
Totally agreed he is a comedic singularity from which no amusement can escape.
Nabbed himself a hot wifey though with Gemma Chan.
Ashens response to the Big Bang Theory is priceless, I couldn’t agree more.
I'd suggest giving Forward Unto Dawn a watch. I'd say it's one of the best Video Game movies.
Bryce Mckenzie it is pretty good
I'm a huge halo fan, but I thought Forward Unto Dawn was meh at best, same with nightfall or whatever that terrible movie was called. I'm hoping the upcoming tv series will be better
Forward Unto Dawn if I remember correctly is just a lame soldier movie with Chief showing up 5 minutes at the end. It was so boring.
He says with Master Chief as his profile pic. In all seriousness is is a bit decent. If you want a really silly video game film, look up the Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney movie by Takeshi Miike.
That's not going to happen.
Bunny & The Bull! I love that movie so much! Feel good comedy is not entirely how I’d explain it just like I wouldn’t call Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind a feel good comedy either lolol
I recall liking return of jafar as a youngun and watching it a ton, but I cant actually remember a single bit of it
Iago sings in it.
Yup. Memory of THAT has come back into your head now, hasn't it?
I wasn't expecting to see Nick & Nora's there. The movie that perfectly encapsulates my awkwardness in life and that actually got me into indie music.
doo DEET Doo DEET HEL-LO!
I dunno about the adaptation, but the original novel Norwegian Wood is wonderful. It's extremely melancholy but oddly beautiful, like most of Murakami's works.
YES I AM PLEASED
Holy motors is an amazing movie, trippy af. Worth watching just for the accordion scene!
Ashens: the thinking man's Simon Pegg
Ashens, like a fine pill of Ecstasy, is best enjoyed at nearly 2am.
I've seen First Squad. It was actually done by a Russian animation studio and it's literal communist propaganda. So if you wanna see the red army battle zombie crusader knights I'd recommend it.
Its russian writers and japan animation studio. And only retarded think what this movie was propaganda. Even russian think about FS what its boring and dumb but propaganda? Pfff not
Ashens; I wouldn't watch anyone, but you, pull DVDs out of a box for half an hour. You are entertaining.
Watch Dexter season 1. Seriously. And, even more seriously, never watch any of the other ones.
Hot take: People should watch Dexter until the point where they personally don't enjoy it.
Honestly, most of the Seasons are actually pretty good, though it does derive from the novels immediately after the first one.
@@charlescampuz5812 Which considering the batshit insanity that goes on in the novels later on may not be a bad thing at all... =) (IMO they reaaaalllyyy went downhill after the first one.)
I forget which season it was (I originally watched them all in a row and there's no clear separation for me), but John Lithgow was awesome in Dexter.
Season 4 is also fantastic
Nearly all the seasons open with some great premise. But all except the first one quickly degenerate into an amalgam of plot holes, nonsensical behaviour and deus ex machina endings (but where the deus is Rob McKenna and the machina is from Poundland).
Duel to the death is a fantastic movie! You are going to love that
"Duel To The Death" is AMAZING!!!
You think Mulan 2 and Aladdin 2 are bad? How about The Fox and the Hound 2, which is doubly bad because it's an interquel set between points of the original and nothing in it matters since we know their fates from The Fox and the Hound 1.
I don't think Return to Neverland is that bad
Jafar is not that bad. Neither is Bambi 2 which has actually had a surprising amount of effort put into it (and done the midquel thing well). The rest range from harmless to poor (all those compilation films.)
The worst Disney sequel of all time though? Cars freakin' 2.
Lion King 1 1/2 is also set during the original, and it is amazing.
Cinderella 3 is also a good one. It has time travel, and the prince actually gets a personality!
