Abstract:
Climate model evaluation is a crucial step in the development and improvement of climate modelling capability. In 2020, the Met Office (the UK's national meteorological service) made the decision to replace their bespoke, in-house tools used to perform climate model evaluation with an open-source, community driven tool called ESMValTool. Adopting ESMValTool at the Met Office enables all the benefits of using open source software, including collaborating with the wider climate model evaluation and analysis community, but it also comes with challenges. The Met Office journey so far includes:
completing technical analysis to support the strategic commitment to adopt ESMValTool
facilitating the development of a governance structure
making contributions to the community, including hosting an ESMValTool workshop last October
Come along to hear more about our journey and what makes ESMValTool a successful open-source community!
