Alright let’s cut right to the chase here: if you’re a hiking enthusiast, The Crack Hike in Killarney Provincial Park is a must do - hands down one of the best trails in Ontario. In my opinion, the only others that I’ve done that truly rival it are the Centennial Ridges trail (Algonquin Provincial Park) and The Top of the Giant Trail (Sleeping Giant Provincial Park). I’ve linked my trail guide video’s to both of these hikes in the cards above and in the video description.
First things first, let’s talk about where Killarney Provincial Park is and how to get there. Killarney is an iconic wilderness landscape: 645 km2 of pink granite, white quartzite ridges of the La Cloche Mountains and stunning blue lakes that inspires many artists, including the Group of Seven.
As a tradition, my best friend Lindsey and I have been doing a fall hiking road trip for quite a few years now - we plan for whenever I’m home visiting from BC! This year, we were ready to take on The Crack. Despite only having one da to make the 4.5 hour trek there and back, we decided to give it a go! We needed to hit the road at the CRACK of dawn in order to get there and give ourselves lots of time to explore. The scenery on the way up was STUNNING - fall in Ontario is truly spectacular.
We arrived at the parking lot around 9:45 - unfortunately we had a little mishap that caused a minor delay on the way up. Not far from the trailhead, we stopped to take some fun photos on the side of the road. The trees were just too beautiful to pass without taking some snaps. Long story short: phone was placed on the edge of the jeep and forgotten about. By the time we realized what had happened and turned back to look for it, it had been hit by a car. RIP phone.
Lindsey - what a champ! She didn’t let it ruin her day. After a good cry and choosing to push forward and still enjoy Killarney, we set off on our adventure.
To access the trailhead, you’ll need to park at the crack parking lot located 7km east of George Lake office, just off of highway 637. Parking anywhere in Killarney Provincial Park requires a parking pass, so make sure to visit reservations.ontarioparks.com/ before you hike. Cost is $15.50.
The trail begins as a leisurely stroll through the forest. Currently, there is a 600m long detour due to a steep section of the trail becoming unsafe to climb… make sure to be safe and take the suggested detour. Once you reach the walls of white quartz, prepare to climb at a steep incline for the remainder of the hike. Bringing lots of water and wearing proper footwear with ankle support is a must. The incredible views at the peak are very much so worth the gruelling uphill grind.
Length: 6km out and back
Elevation Gain: 261m
Time: factor in ~4 hours round trip
Difficulty: Moderate-difficult - first section is a leisurely stroll through wooded area for about 1.5-2km. The final 1-1.5km is a steep climb to the peak, with lots of large boulders that require good physical condition to conquer.

Great video! Glad you liked the hike. The views are absolutely amazing and well worth the travel time. My brother and I did The Crack on Oct 4 and the weather was spectacular!! Will definitely visit Killarney again for another fall hike. Next time you are in Killarney try out Granite Ridge and Chikanishing - they can be easily done in about 4-5 hours (depending on how many stops you make for photos ... I tend to take a LOT!.

Great video! The Crack is an awesome trail and the view is probably the best in the park. We went Thanksgiving weekend and it was so busy that you had to be booked ahead and the access was closed for the day by 9-10am each morning. It's always worth it 😁 Granite Ridge is another nice view like someone else said, its short enough that when we stay in the campground its almost a daily hike. Nice views of the mountains and park to one side and Georgian Bay on the other.
Such an awesome trail! It would definitely be packed thanksgiving weekend. I try to avoid these places on known busy days/ weekends/ holidays. Looking forward to checking out Granite Ridge some day. Thanks for the recommendation ☺️

Top of the Giant, for sure! Longer and greater elevation gain/ incline. Worth it for the views, though!
