Such memories - My father used to patrol the pier when he worked for the Tyne Improvement Commission - there is a tunnel that goes the full length of the pier and he used to have to clock in down there. When the weather was bad the pier used to be closed As a child i used to toddle along there on my tricycle (supervised of course) - i now live in Cornwall but my heart will always be in the North East.
We had loads of walks down here with my father. His own great grandmother ( merchant seaman's wife and daughter) was living near here too by the 1850s and lots of others in the famly since. I wish I were nearer now.
when i was in my 20's i would fish off here 28 years later emmmm not a chance its to far and can't get around the gate so i stick to the river ahhhh safe lol
I've seen waves roll right over that pier and then break over the south pier. I think that would have been in 1991 or 92. Amazingly, there were folks dumb enough to have been fishing the south pier in it and two died on the South pier that day.
