  • American Picabo Street repeated Diann Roffe's sensation from 1994 Olympic Games, as a total outsider she won Olympic Super-G gold. Highly favorited team from Germany ended a race without medals. Michaela Dorfmeister of Austria with bib 18 got very close to Street and lost gold by just 0,01 seconds!

Thank you for finding and posting this clip. I've always considered Picabo's win in the Super G to be one of the greatest forgotten sports achievements ever. Her wide open style at the ragged edge of control, in contrast to her European opponents tight, precise, and measured control to be a fine example of the heart and courage of a champion, she left nothing on that hill that day.And for her efforts a Gold medal; and our enduring awe and affection.

Thank you for posting this. For years the only version was the Real Audio crap version on the Nagano site and that evaporated looong ago. Cheers!

Pecabo was on the Rossi 9X I had, and Dorfmiester had the Nordica GP boots I had (best boots of all time, they need a re-release of that design), such a golden era of modern ski racing

Thank you so much for posting! I was 14 watching this with a large dominoes pizza, Coca Cola and my parents with our Golden retriever by a crackling fire. I so miss the 90s. ❤

Those days, when super-gs looked like straight downhills

Infact, there's an interesting story here. Course setter was russian coach Yuri Melnikov whose top skiers Warwara Zelenskaya and Svetlana Gladisheva were mainly downhill specialists but that wasn't the main reason why this super-G was set that way. Melnikov was also a course setter a month prior to Winter Olympic Games in Cortina d'Ampezzo. He had set up such complex and complicated World Cup super-G that threw out 13 out of 15 skiers in a top seeding group so he had to listen lots of critics. A week before Olympics he was drawn again to set up the course. Probably afraid of another criticism he had set up very open course that suited the downhill specialists, especially Picabo Street and the Austrians. Another big factor were skies. Due to very open course and downhill-like super-G skiers had to make a tough decision: which skies are suitable for the race? All the medalists took the DH skies for this race, Seizinger and some others chose SG skies (which are a bit shorter) and post-race analysis clearly showed that was a big error in judgement.

Commentator's are dingbats! Picabo clocks a 109 on the gun the next skier hits 107 and the guy goes gaga over 'by far the faster of the day!" Duh!

I married one of her cousins. We've been together 7 years and he just now told me there was an Olympian in our family.

Picabo is not a nice woman. An incredible ski racer, but a mean woman...
