*Buddha* inspired people to move away from the materialistic life. He was experienced in having all material comfort so it was easy for him to realise that materialistic life can't make one happy.. His preaching was futuristic and seems to be far more relevant today then it would have been in the past.
However there were saints who tried to infuse the importance of materialistic life for the sustainenance of civilization.
Indias population declined and then stagnated from 200BC to 500 AD though there was a constant influx of population from the western corridors. The mighty kingdoms turned into ruins due to the lack of population, military might and competent administrators.
This was the time when Buddhism was ar its peak. The chief reason for this was the culture of celibacy and discard of family life in order to live the life of a monk.
This was prominent amongst the ruling class as well as educated classes resulting in scarcity of administrative talent and manpower. There were people who sought enligtenment just like Buddha and followed in his footsteps.
But then there were those who belived in folk relegion they were far from it as they searched for basic means of sustainenance and for materialistic growth.
During the peak of Buddhism The Martial tradition and culture was gradually vanishing, militaries and kingdoms were mere symbols as the materialistic way of life was discarded during this age. The educated the talented the noble people understood Buddha's teachings very well and due to their choice to leave materialistic things there was a huge shortage of such talent ..
People with compulsive behavioral traits who were solely guided by the survival instincts became prolific breeders but due to lack of leadership, guidance, aptitude and organizational traits they could not exercise due influence and control.
India become vulnerable to foreign invasion as population and kingdoms collapsed huge vacuume was created.
Some rulers and few saints recognized this phenomenon and decided to reinstall the basic principles of existence amongst the population they laid emphasis on the materialistic way of life or the Grihasta Ashram though many of them were trained monks themselves.
Shankracharya and few others in his league promoted materialistic way of life for the sustainenance and maintenance of civilization though he himself was trained in Buddhist philosophy.
Today we reccognise Sanatan Dharma as a continuous tradition system of imbibing, assimilating and connecting several philosophies and traditions into its manifold schools of thoughts as one continuous tradition....
