      H-Milk ... because of the heating process which kills some of the natural milk-bacterias in order to make it long-lasting is because of that lack of most of the milk-bacterias way easier to digest but yes the taste is therefore slightly different as well....I´ve got a little milk-intolerance..not as bad that I can´t eat or drink any milk product or that I have to use lactose-free milk but I´ll get troubles when I drink normal milk...so therefore I´m fine with H-Milk
      By the way the socalled "Locher" (2 hole-punch) has on one side a plastic thing which you can pull out in order to give you the right measurement for making the holes on the right spot (the middle of the paper) so therefore every piece of paper will get the holes on the same spot and it´s variable depending on how far you pull it out for A4 or A5 or other sizes ...just mentioned it because in your demonstration you didn´t use it and therefore you didn´t made the holes straight in the middle

      When I wanted to get something like a Dayquil capsule or tablet in a German Apotheke, all they had was this really nasty powdered stuff that I had to mix with water. I missed being able to just swallow a capsule and not taste anything.
      One of the things that I do miss from Germany though is the Vitamin C or Magnesium tablets that you drop into a cup of water and it becomes a nice tasting fizzy drink.

    Did you know that you can fold A4 in the middle to get to A5? Or that you can stick two A4s together to get to A3? Two of them to get A2? Two of them to get A1? And 18 of them to get the big billboard you can see on houses? The A system was actually invented in Germany and is now used in nearly all countries worldwide.

    • @ulliulli

      @@PassportTwo Well, we germans have systems/norms for almost every aspect of our live. The thing is that most systems like that are part of the so called DIN-Norm (Deutsches Institut für Normung -> German institute for norm factors) and was before that and Standartisation Committee of german industry. With the industralization the germans (esp. the prussians) realized that "having the least possible standard factors/norms" is a way to success. When your engine is broken, you are able to repair it with almost every tool, use standard parts etc. That's why germany was so successfull back in the day.
      Then we realized, that standartization of the industry is nice though, but we could put a standard on almost everything.
      E.g. Colours have also DIN standards (as long as they are produced in germany or for the german market). So if you like to have a special colour, you can pick the main ingredients (colours) from any producer and you will get always the same endresult (as long as they follow the DIN).
      Even writing a letter succumbs DIN. Just google for "DIN 5008" and you will find the a huge rule set for stuff like punctuation, font, how to write dates, paragraphs etc. for a simple task like... writing a letter. Did you notice that almost all letters from public authorities look kinda the same with some variations? Welcome to DIN-Land ;)
      DIN is not a law, so when you wanna start a papersheet trade, go on and have your own sizes. But that could lead to problems when your awesome paper won't fit in the standardized enveloupes ;)
      But I guess the paper size standards are one of the most german things ever - besides Reinheitsgebot and "IHRE PAPIERE BITTE!" :)

    As for eggs, in Germany it is also _recommended_ to store them in the fridge, to keep them good to eat for as long as possible.
    However, once you put them in the fridge, you MUST KEEP them refrigerated until use.
    This is also the main reason eggs are never refrigerated in stores (nor during transport) in Germany: This way consumers can safely transport them home unrefrigerated, and can freely choose whether to store them refrigerated or unrefrigerated.

    • @Anson_AKB
      @Anson_AKB 4 роки тому +14

      yes! when taking them out of refrigeration (even for a short time, for transport) they get "wet" (caused by cold items coming into contact with humid or normal warm air) and that voids the "natural protection" they had when not washing them. this effect gets worse the more often you cool and warm them, eg lots of steps during transport (to supermarket, to home, etc) or even when you often open and close the fridge with the eggs eg on a shelf in the fridge door. from that time on bacteria and other stuff can grow every time they are no longer cold.

    The reason most countries use DIN paper, like DIN A4 and so on is because of the ratio of the sides. When You half (or double) the paper the ratio stays exactly the same. It makes it way easier to shrink down or increase the size of Your layout. When You design a Layout in A4 You can blow it up to A1 or shrink it down to A6 or whatever You want and Your layout stays exactly the same, You have no borders, no stretching, no changes in the design... makes a lot of things easier

Most of the time in the US when we buy produce, we 'wash' it before eating. However, when we say 'wash' in this context, what we really mean is 'rinse.' When we wash our eggs or produce, we literally are turning on water and running it under for a second or two just to rinse off anything from the farm, i.e. dirt or feathers. In the case of eggs, it is just to knock that stuff off so when we crack them, we don't have dirt falling into our eggs that we dig out. 1: Short, controlled sprays. The more precise and accurate you are, the less aerosol ends up in your lungs.
    2: Now, this is a weird one, but try putting a shirt on first and then spraying under it. This way, any extra spray is just gonna get caught in your clothes and eventually washed out instead of smelling up the room.

      many people like to have (and keep up to half a year) ONE liter of H-milk as kind of reserve in case they forgot to buy some in time for the weekend when shops are closed although most people seem to not like the H taste. but the most common is the cooled milk "länger haltbar" (not longer than Hmilk but only longer than untreated milk) which usually lasts up to three weeks (some companies give a date of 3 weeks and one day later it turns bad, while others specify only one week but you can use it two more weeks after that date). until maybe 1-2 decades ago when that 3-week milk was introduced, normal cooled milk was only good for 1-3 or at most 7 days, and we had to adapt to a slightly different taste of the 3-week milk although by far it isn't as bad as the H milk.
      each of all these types of milk is/was available with different percentages of fat (usually 1.5% or 3% to 3.5%)
      about the eggs: in the usa they have to be cleaned and washed by law, and thus also have to be refrigerated. in europe they are not washed and thus are protected "naturally" unless they get wet which would be the case if you refrigerate them (cold egg plus humid or normal warm air gives wet eggs), and thus not only can they but even have to be sold unrefrigerated in europe. because of these different (even opposite) laws in the US and europe, neither egg may be exported to, imported from or sold in the other region.
      if you boil eggs in hot water or know how to open them without bathing the shell in yolk (and mostly you then immediately cook/bake them anyway) you don't need to additionally wash them before.

    Well, regarding milk I wouldn´t say that "fresh" milk is purchased less than "H-Milch".
    Both exist simultanously serving different purposes.
    I think the difference in taste does not have such a huge impact on peoples decision on which one to buy ...
    Mostly people buy H-Milch as kind of reserve in case they´re running out of "fresh" milk which (unfortunately) is not really as fresh as it was sold until ca. 10 yrs ago.
    The reason is simply that supermarkets wanted to reduce the amount of unsold (and thrown away = €€€) milk and forced the milk industry to switch to a mild UHT system which let´s milk last up to 1,5-2 weeks rather than the basic max. 1 week ...
    Even that mild UHT treatment came along with a slight change in taste - unfortunately.
    So, there are only very few options left to get really fresh (tasting) milk.
    Notably if you live in a rural area where a local farmer is allowed to sell milk straight from his farm.

    • @PassportTwo
      @PassportTwo  4 роки тому

      The point that supermarkets want H-Milk more to reduce amount of lost product is a great point. Hadn't thought about the large corporations and stores influencing consumer behavior for their gain in this one particular field or product.
      In our village we do have a local farm that has set up a dispenser of 'farm fresh' milk in the parking lot of the grocery store. It is a bit more expensive but it tastes a lot better and I have assumed better health benefits.

    • @swanpride
      @swanpride 4 роки тому +1

      Oh, H-Milk has been around much longer. In the past, fresh milk went bad within three days, sometimes earlier. So if you needed milk for cooking on Sunday and discovered that your milk had gone back, it was practical to have a package of H-Milk ready. Nowadays so called "fresh" milk holds way longer, so H-Milk is now mostly used by people who have limited cooling ability, simply like that it keeps so long or who remember Chernobyl (after Chernobyl, all fresh products, including fresh milk vanished from the shelves for a few weeks and naturally H-milk was sold out pretty fast. Those who had put some on storage (or reacted fast when the news hit) lucked out, everyone else had to improvise).

    • @xaverlustig3581
      @xaverlustig3581 4 роки тому

      I disagree totally. H-Milch is a godsend. I remember when it came in when I was a small child, my parents totally went for UHT milk and never looked back, and I use it exclusively too. It's very convenient that you can stock up for months on milk, expecially as a single, and it's more economical and resource friendly because much less milk goes off before being drunk. Besides some of the fresh milk containers in the old days were leaky; there were different designs, especially the plastic hose ones were awful.

    • @jensalik
      @jensalik 4 роки тому

      Well, even fresh milk is pasteurized, the difference ist the time it gets pasteurized. Today H-Milk doesn't taste much different of "fresh milk"; it mostly depends on available brands (as same brand fresh and H-Milk taste virtually the same).
      RAW-milk on the other side is somtehing completely different. But the change in taste mostly comes from homogenization (or the lack of it if you take raw milk). This leads to fat on top and less in the milk itself; making the popular first sip the "best". Besides that, the taste is quite the same (you'd agree if you ever tried homogenized raw milk), but the higher bacteria count can lead to a whole lot of intenstinal problems beginning with flatulence and going all the way up to diarrhea...

      There have been a lot of comments about when we said we 'wash' the eggs but I think it is getting lost in translation. We know it won't kill us and 'washing' isn't for antibacterial reasons either.

      Wrong. Pasteurisation is using 60 C for a longer time instead of the 140+ C for a short time as used in H-milk. You'll have trouble getting milk that is only pasteurised in Germany nowadays. Nearly all milk you find in the fridge section in Germany is ESL milk. ESL is often heated to 120 C or filtered through membranes to get the "extended shelf life". Which is why the ESL milk tastes like mixing H-milk and fresh milk about 1:1.

    About the paper: you have just to tell your printer and computer that you want to print letter or DIN- size, so it does. My collegue went to Dubai for a building project, and there the sold printers are for letter size, but it is really no problem to switch.

    • @PassportTwo
      @PassportTwo  4 роки тому +2

      Yup, we finally figured that out after our prints were coming out so funny. We didn't notice the paper difference because A4 and US letter size is so close to the same size that it wasn't obvious at first. Anyways, we have it switched on our computers now so we are good to go now 😊

    • @allesindwillkommen

      The difference between A4 and Letter size is so negligible in my experience that I've never even bothered changing any settings. I notice I often print with the default Letter size settings on my A4 printer. And what usually happens is it just affects the size of your margins slightly. But who cares about margins in everyday life?

    Just like the Letter paper format, 3-ring binders are essentially a North American thing only, and therefore of course not a thing here (except for very niche applications). Office supplies invariably follow the international ISO 838 standard, which is the 2-hole 8 cm system you've found. Binders are usually lever action ("Aktenordner").
    In the educational sector, an extension to ISO 838 is also in common use, which features 4 holes spaced 8+8+8 cm apart. Binders for this system are usually implemented as snap action ("Ringbuch"), and you can get loose blank paper or tear-off notebooks with holes pre-punched for this "888" system. Tab sheets, transparent pockets and the like, even when targeted at the office sector, are also frequently pre-punched or shaped to fit the "888" system. Hole punches are usually 2-hole models with a fixed hole spacing, but their alignment aids typically also feature a setting for use with the "888" system (requiring A4 paper). Dedicated 4-hole punches are also available (sometimes implemented as two 2-hole punches connected with some rig), but can be expensive.
    If you _need_ a 3-ring binder for some reason, search for a fantasy/sci-fi/roleplay game shop, and look for trading card game accessories. That's the only niche I've ever seen 3-ring systems being used in (and also the only niche I've never seen a 2- or 4-ring system). But be aware that paper and punches will be hard to come by, as pretty much the only thing trading card gamers need are the binders and pre-punched transparent pocket sheets.
    If what you really want is snap action, smaller form factor, and a wider spacing of the outermost holes for less wear & tear on the holes, what you really want is a "Ringbuch" instead of an "Ordner"; you'll find that there are plenty of choices and accessories for those.
    If you want a lever-action 4-hole binder, look in a dedicated and reasonably large office supply shop for binders specifically designed for the archival of bank statements - in Germany, bank statements traditionally come in a form factor as wide as A4 but only about 1/3 as high, and are often archived using 2-hole binders half as high as a regular binder; however, regular-size binders exist that are designed to hold two stacks of bank statements, and their mechanics are deliberately spaced in such a way that they can also be co-opted for the "888" system.

      There is also a Swedish hole punch standard with four holes 21, 70 and 21 mm apart. Four hole systems are really nice since instead of rings that open in the middle you can have two guide pins from each side. Both the forward and reverse facing pins are long enough to hold all papers in the binder. This means that you can open the binder and add or remove papers in the front or in the back without papers falling out.

    The paper size is very logic. DIN A4 (Deutsche-Industrie-Norm => german industrial norm) explains a norm size for paper. A DIN A5 Paper is half of the size of DIN A4 paper and DIN A6 is half of the size of DIN A5. So.. DIN A0 is a very huge paper and DIN A8 a very small one. DIN describes exactly the form and size of every produced Item in Germany and a lot more… for example if you need a Job in Germany you can use DIN 5008, it explains how a Application has to be. Because of DIN the Logo "Made in Germany" was so succesful because DIN also has quality standards.

    If you enjoy writing with fountain pens and want to get away from the school pens - but don't really want to spend a small fortune on a Mont Blanc or something of the likes I really recommend the Diplomat (Traveller) fountain pens. If you enjoy a soft, smooth writing experience I would also recommend going for a gold tip instead of a steel tip - it is somewhat more expensive and for the best writing experience you gotta be the only one who uses that pen (and you need to have to have developed a consistent way of writing with a fountain pen) ; the gold tip is softer, so after a few pages it adjusts to your personal style of writing and any scratching you might experience with harder tips disappears. Of course if the angle / pressure /etc changes all the time the tip never really adjusts and you won't notice a difference between the gold tip and a steel tip.

There are stripes for the paper sizes, mostly A4, A5 and sometimes also B5 or B6 (Another DIN-Paper-Norm) and when you use it in the correct way you alway make the holes at the perfect ''place''

    I’m from Oklahoma, and studied German for several years like 30 years ago. That’s a long time to forget. But last year, I finally went with my wife to Germany (once the kids were out of the house). Stayed with my exchange student from 30 years ago for a few days, and travelled Germany and Austria for a few weeks.
    A few things surprised me. As you said, the sparkling vs still water (I’m from Stillwater, so that’s fun) was a bit odd to me when I didn’t know I was ordering sparkling water. The small sodas with no refill was another. Salami pizza vs pepperoni (since pepperoni is a different thing there). Square, unsliced pizza confused me - as did everyone eating it with a knife and fork. Public transportation was great, but the Italians and Americans (who were everywhere) seemed to be the most overtly friendly. The Germans generally kept to themselves with the exception of when we were seated at a table with them (another thing I found odd, but not totally unexpected).
    I spoke better german than I understood. The regional dialects can be very confusing, and I thought many people mumbled a lot.
    Loved the country. Visiting again likely this summer (did a Jeep tour of the US and skipped Europe this time around).

      There have been a lot of comments about when we said we 'wash' the eggs but I think it is getting lost in translation. We know it won't kill us and 'washing' isn't for antibacterial reasons either. 😊

Meat and fish, especially fresh, even less. But hard pasta, rice, tinned food, etc., if stored in a cool and dry place, could last months longer. Just keep your wits, if it looks off, smells off, it will probably taste off and be off. I have thrown out yoghurt that wasn't even past the date, but was completely blown up, too.

    It's funny how a lot of people are confused by the "washing your eggs" thing. Actually in old German cooking books I've also seen comments about rinsing the egg before using it. Some decades ago it was more likely to get salmonella by touching the eggs as they often get pooped on by chickens due to the lack of space in the coop. So it definitely makes sense to rinse the eggs but as we Germans are less concerned about bacteria than Americans we just crack them open like that. If you cook the egg it doesn't matter anyways. Only if you prepare stuff with raw eggs, like e.g. Tiramisu, you might be more careful. I think Germans live more by the phrase: What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. ;)
    Still the information about the protective layer on the eggs was very interesting. I didn't know that and always wondered why eggs can be stored at room temperature in the supermarket as we usually keep them in the fridge at home. Thanks for that!

      @@FiveOClockTea it's difficult to travel to some countries from the US. For example it's easy for people from New York to travel to Canada, but flying to Mexico City is a 6+ hour plane ride with no stops. Florida it's easy to go to the Caribbean but more difficult to go to parts of Canada or Mexico. Southern California it's easy to go to Mexico, but takes forever to get to the Caribbean. Fountain pens were used by everybody in the USA decades ago, but by the 1960s they were replaced by ballpoints. Those had been around since the late 1940s but when really cheap disposable BIC pens appeared in the ‘60s, people shifted to those. Also in the ‘60s, the first fine-point felt-tip pens from Japan became popular in the USA.

    Mineral water: Standard rule is: The waiter brings a closed bottle to your table and opens it (the "Kronkorken") in front of you. You should reject opened water bottles because some restaurants refill bottles with tab water and as say you can carbonated that very easily. You would be for an "expensive" bottle of mineral water and get cheap tab water.

    A4 is the standard paper size in Germany. It was invented in Germany. As well as the ring binder in the late 1870s. It was always a two-hole system. Only the USA decided to have three holes due to the slightly longer, but slimmer letter size paper.
    Ball point pens are also commonly used, as well as felt tip pens. BTW, that little handle you can see at 3:51 sticking out at the left side of the two hole punch can be extracted. This allows you to slide the paper to a specific setting to allow perfectly center holes being punched in A4, A5, and maybe even A6. The more expensive hole punches might have such exotic formats such as B4, B5, B6, or even letter.
    Ice in drinks. Well that depends on the seasons. In most seasons in Germany it's not hot enough to warrant ice in your drink. Summer or very hot spring or fall days might, but even then it is uncommon in Germany to get ice in your drink. Ice waters down the drink when it melts, and it takes up volume with, essentially, tap water that is not used for the drink itsself.
    Like you said in Germany there are almost never any refills. Because we are very conscious about the sugar contents of soft drinks we tend to drink them only for their taste, not as refreshment or liquid intake.
    Eggs don't need to be washed before using unless you want to use them raw, such as in Zabaione. For raw eggs, always get really really fresh eggs. Also, as someone else below already said, it is recommended to keep them refrigerated after a certain date to keep them fresh for consumption.
    The farmers don't have to vaccinate their chickens if their chickens are kept in an animal-friendly environment with clean nests. Only in cases of infections during the regular state controlled veterinary examinations are anti-bacterial agents applied to the chickens. Vaccinations can be used but many farmers don't have to use them. The process in the USA is due to unsanitary breeding and animal husbandry practices. The eggs can be contaminated with different infections. So during the process the eggs are washed in a chlorine solution, then washed again, and sprayed with an artificial coating. This both removes the natural cuticle as well as changes the taste of the eggs. And it makes cooling of the eggs mandatory in the USA.
    In a comparative study about the salmonella infections comparing the USA and Europe, Europe has consistently fewer than half the infections per 100 000 population than in the USA.
    H-milch. For me that isn't milk anymore. I personally dislike the taste of H-milk. But for using it in coffee it is ok as the coffee is much stronger in taste than the h-milk.
    Fresh milk in Germany usually has a much higher fat content than most milks in the USA. This is more appropriate to the natural milk fat content of cows milk of around 3.8%.
    If you want to treat yourself to some great milk try to find non-homogenized milk. It is still pasteurized but the natural fat content isn't extracted, then pressed through a micro-fine sieve and re-injected into the milk. This is in essence the homogenization process so that the fat does not separate from the whey part of the milk. But during that process nearly the whole fat content is extracted and dispersed. This changes the taste of homogenized compared to non-homogenized milk significantly.

    You can let the Eggs outside of the Refrigorator, but usually People still lay them in there. They hold longer and you can even Eat them when the Expiry Date is exceeded. ( I and my Family eat sometimes Eags that were 7-10 Days over the Expiry Date. You still need to cook them completly, like doing an Omelette or such, but as long as they dont Smell and all its fine)
    The only Exception are the hard-boiled, brightly painted eggs that you can buy. You can let them outside for quite some Time ( Not so good if its Summer, but in Winter when its Cold you can let them stay outside for 3 Weeks or even 4 without Problems)
