  • The return to bully ball was one of the stories of the 2024 season. So perhaps it's fitting that the story of the Super Bowl was that of the Eagles utterly dominating the trenches on both sides of the ball in their 40-22 triumph over the Chiefs. Robert Mays and Derrik Klassen break down Super Bowl LIX on this episode of The Athletic Football Show.

    Mid 2nd quarter Chiefs get the ball:
    1st down - Sweat sack
    2nd down - Hunt/Sweat sack
    3rd down - DeJean pick 6
    best defensive drive i’ve ever seen. absolute dominance throughout this game.

    What is Derrick talking about at 18:30? When has Mahomes done everything and his defense let him down? The only possible example is the Pats AFC championship. Other than that, the defense has kept him viable in games where he’s been mid like last year’s AFC championship and most of his superbowl wins until the 4th quarter. The Chiefs have been a great defensive team for most of Mahomes career.

    These guys are great. So glad this popped up on my feed. They are actually talking about the team that won and backing their comments with facts.

    I ran the numbers recently and Howie has chosen an O or D lineman with about 40% of his day 1 and day 2 picks.
    Not quite as high of a number as public perception would lead you to think.

    I think Robert and Derrik jumped onto the narrative that what happens in the regular season doesn't matter for the Chiefs because they will figure it out in the playoffs. There is obviously some truth to that. On the other hand, the Chiefs had O-Line struggles all year. The Bills defense is just not anywhere near what this Eagles defense is. We saw that O-Line struggle tonight. The Chiefs are great at figuring out answers, but you cannot just write off the problems they have in the regular seaosn.

      All true, but I also think at some point you just have to give credit to Howie and Philly's roster. The fact that they can rush four that effectively, while locking everything down in the secondary, has a lot to do with their effectiveness today. Past any o-line issues the Chiefs have, which is a reasonable point to bring up.

      I guess what I'm saying is: I'm not sure what team doesn't get bulldozed by that defense. If the Philly offense is swinging without needing Saquan, I'm not sure who they lose to today.

      @ Philly had the best defense in the NFL. Buffalo for example had a middle of the pack defense and Kansas City was able to overcome their own personnel weaknesses to still score quote a few points. There is no doubt that Philly having the best defense in the NFL played a large role in Kansas City's offensive struggles last night.
      At the same time, despite the 15-2 record the Chiefs had like the 10th best offense in the NFL. A good offense, but not elite, and one with noticeable weaknesses. In the two weeks leading up to the Super Bowl, Robert and Derrik and Robert and the Athletic's Chiefs beat reporter talked about how regular season narratives don't really matter for the Chiefs. When it comes playoff time they are a different team. My point was simply that what you see during the regular season does have meaning. Even if the Chiefs won this game close in a low scoring game (20-17), it would have meaning even if the Chiefs were able to overcome it. It mattered against the Texans too. The Chiefs were able to overcome that, but that was a game where if the game script goes in a different direction, the Texans could have won it. So even before the Super Bowl that narrative didn't really make sense.

      @dimer1977 День тому

      @@philibusters23 Yeah I see what you're saying, and it's a good point. The only hole in the argument, and what I assume led Robert and everyone else to promote that narrative, was the performance against Buffalo. It really did look like they could just turn it on at will in that game. Which leaves me wondering, could they have done the same against anyone other than the Eagles? Sample size would argue in favour of your point, which is no. This is who they were to some extent. Which is a valid theory. Good thoughts mate! Very interesting to think about

    • @philibusters23
      @philibusters23 День тому

      @@dimer1977 No, we saw they couldn't turn it on against everybody. Eagles probably had the best defense, Vikings second best, and Texans third best. We saw in the divisional game against the Texans, but for a few borderline penalties that extended drives, the Chiefs offense really struggled and they could have easily lost that game if the game script goes in a different direction. The Chiefs only had 212 yards against the Texans, they won cause of a couple key plays and key penalties. We also saw a half dozen games in the regular season where that offense had problems. It wasn't a bad offense, but it was like the 10th best offense and that it struggled against the best defense in teh NFL, the Eagles, should not have been a surprise

    Go back to Diane Russini interview with Jayden Daniels. She asked what the keys to attacking the Philly defense was and he said it was to neutralize that Philly line (quick pass game, run plays like traps and whams) and to avoid negative plays. I think Patrick didn't do a good job of taking the 3 yard pass play and therefore took way to many sacks. Eagles did what they did all season, it was surprising the Chiefs didn't have a better plan.

    this was insane, the way I saw it was, if the chiefs won, it was going to be a close game, but if philly won, it was going to be a massacre, led by the eagles Dline

    I think the Eagles will only be able to keep one of their four expensive free agents this offseason (Josh Sweat, Zach Baun, Milton Williams, and Mekhi Becton). It will be interested which one or maybe even two they prioritize.

      All that said, the Eagles may bring back two of them and have them count like 3.5 million and 4.2 million against the cap next year respectively.

    The Chiefs lost the game. Because their coordinator forgot, they had a dual threat quarterback - they kept Patrick Mahomes in the pocket, pistol and shotgun... and too much play action stupidity.
    They should have been running the ball and exercising the third down option with their fourth rushing option in the dual threat QB
    They did that last year, they did it the year before last and suddenly forgot this year?
    This turned out being the biggest indictment against the pocket passer. They should have rand their game the way their quarterback is.
    They should have maintained the ground game with the RPO, and ran the damn ball.
    They didn't even make adjustments after the half that helped until they started doing what?
    Running the ball effectively... giving Mahomme's room if you wanted to pass when the situation needed.
    I'm not vested in either team but prefer the chiefs over the eagles, but love Jalen Hurts as a QB, but Mahommes is my boy.
