    To be fair … danes doesn’t just speak gibberish when foreigners are around.
    We do it all the time. Also when a new danish member is introduced into a group of people who have existing relations in between. We tend to “forget” those who have absolutely no idea of what’s being discussed. 😉
    Not because of rudeness or anything. But more of … you know … “ wanna understand? Learn the lingo!” kinda thing.

    Some of our schools in Washington State are switching to the European model. We’ve actually had art-only high schools here since the 90s. In the last 10 years, the middle school you go to preps you for which high school-so if your kid is into science, there are 2-3 middle schools that they’ll have to go to in order to go to the science high school. The city where I live has one of the few IB high schools on the west coast.

    Hej Kelly,
    Mange tak for the nice video.
    I noticed as well in my travels to Denmark, that many citizens take pride in their properties. I also see that a lot of people in DK grow and maintain hedges around their land.
    With my limited knowledge of the Danish language, I believe that I speak with a fair amount of dialect.

      @@Primrose_CraftedLife Thanks for your feedback. I'm not sure about the country side, rural area. But, when I looked at the amount of hedges grown in town and city suburbs (related to houses in DK) they were there in abundance. Way, way more than you would see in the suburbs of Southern Ontario.

    • @danfrompc
      @danfrompc 3 роки тому +1

      @@Primrose_CraftedLife My guess is that many Danes plant hedges as a natural border between properties. It is a way of maintaining some privacy among neighbours. It does take a fair amount of work to keep the hedges in pristine condition. :)

    22:27 My sister's daughter got a boyfriend in London.
    When they got a child, we were invited to the baptism.
    We Danes were in almost the same situation: His family would only speak English and only among themselves.
    His father gave us an apology, as he saw we were left out.
    They did not like to talk with us, due to our English was so bad.
    He could see it was rude, as our English was better than their Danish.

      @@hamborg2 To make things more strange; it was her idea to get the child baptized. Not that our family is particularly religious, but more as a tradition we do such Church rituals. His family had never done such. Thus she thought it would most likely only be the danish friends and family who would attend, so the Danish Church in London was where the baptism took place; danish speaking ceremony.
      However, much to everyone's surprise, most of his family did show up as well.

      I have lived in the US for nearly 60 years and one thing I noticed about the Anglo culture is that people know that is very rude to speak in a language that a 3d person doesn't understand and they go out of their way to make you feel included. They do it by translating some of the interactionfor the 3d person. I love and appreciate this habit and have seen it in other countries where Americans are present.

      I’m a teacher and my most recent experience is in Washington State. I made a separate post on that here.
      I graduated high school in the Southeast USA in a farming community. We had 3 tracks: vocational (carpenter and bricklayer), office work (typing, shorthand, bookkeeping), and then you took French if you wanted to go to college.
      Our book reports were 13 page fully footnoted and referenced mini-theses. I was shocked to find out city high schools were not so stringent.
      From what I’ve seen, that’s reversed now. We’ve had a horrid impact from George Bush’s No Child Left Behind Act from 20 years ago. Our literacy rate in the US is now down to 78%.

    The alone in a group thing happens to danes too, once i had a group of friends ALL they talked about was tractors and farming, and i have ABSOLUTLY no interest in that, so i always felt kinda alone when i was with them. But thx for pointing it out, it is proberly something we can be better at.

    True, speaking only Danish when a foreigner is part of a get-together is rude! (It can be shyness sometimes though). I have an American in my family (he speaks quite fluent Danish by now) and the first few years we talked a lot with him in English. Now I only speak Danish when talking to him; he has to practice the language after all.

      Actually it would be nice if you could tell us about the whole school system from kindergarten to uni. Slowly. And what's the exact difference between a college and a uni? Is college just for bachelor degrees and are those regarded as 'full/real' degrees?

    • @patgreen8619
      @patgreen8619 2 роки тому

      @Finn Ekberg Christiansen
      Traditionally, the technical distinction has been that colleges only offer 2 or 4 year degrees, and universities offer postgraduate 5+ year masters and doctorates. In everyday speech, however, most Americans simply refer to any form of postsecondary education as "college". It is less formal, and also quicker and easier to say. We often seem to be in a hurry, and will pick a 2-syllable word over a 5-syllable one. :)

    Regarding your neighbor: if he's 70+ there is a chance he was afraid you would talk to him, or he would have to talk to you if he said hi. Everybody would have known that you were speaking english. If he's older, there's is a good chance that he can't. So maybe he was trying to save face?
