Fire retardent foam its not what your thinking iv got 15 years as an installer you don't gotta like it but it's still true lol shit made to have a hard time burning
Really everyone is missing the scariest part. It's just a mask and no fresh air. I worked in the industry. That open cell foam gets into the lungs... no good. But like ya said, next step spray the fire retardant just like for roofs. Personally I'd go with Cellulose and borate insulation.
I am an Electrician. One of my many electricallal job was fire restoration. I would go in with the Fire Inspector, after a fire, and install temporary electrical service, through out the house. One time, I was in a burnt out house. It was a new three story McMansion. We spotted the source of the fire. The fire was started im the bathroom ceiling. The fire was centered around the bathroom exhaust fan. Commonly called the "fart fan" in the Electrical trade. What probably happened is that the exhaust fan was left on, while the familyf was out. Either the fan got stuck, causing the motor to heat up, or the motor got hot from extended running time. Normally, this will not cause a fire, because there is enough space in the joist to dissipate the heat. But not in this case, the insulation was packed tightly around the fart fan. This caused the heat to build up, and a fire to occur. It was interesting to see, because the fire spread from the fart fan. So too much insulation can cause fire, especially around electrical boxes.
@jamesmooney8933 I don't think the fire retardant insulation was to blame for the fire😂 even you said it yourself there was an electrical problem with the exhaust fan... house would have burned down with stay foam or fiberglass insulation
@@konnerkramer329 Correct, there was an electrical problem with the fart fan. Being an old electrician, I am aware of a time when insulation was not installed in the ceilings of bathrooms. Fart fans were free of insulation. When the Fart fan went to ground, the heat would be spread throughout the gap between the joist. The burnt out fart fan would give a terrible smell, but not burn down the house. The real fire problem is low grade shorts, that don't trip breakers. Staplers on Romex cause fires it not properly installed. Every so often you will hear of a fire. The house was being remodeled. What happened was a staple was put in improperly, and the staple nicked the romex. This created a low grade short. It was not enough to trip a breaker, but created a small electric heater. This low grade heater burnt into the 2x4 stud. Over time the stud caught on fire, and burnt down the house. I use one hole straps in stead of staples. I don't install fart fans or light fixtures boxes around insulation. I worked my last 20 years as a maintenance electrician. I seen many things happen with electrical. I have an extreme respect for electric. Did you know an Electrician in New England was convicted of manslaughter because he incorrectly wire an electric wall heater. I am not aware of the details, but there are special wire nut connector that are required to use in electric heaters. You can't use the standard plastic wire nuts. As a maintenance electrician, I wired electrical space heaters, and used the special connectors.
You right Mr electrician. . Is true. I don't know why they put so much insulation on it Besides, when people have an electrical or plumbing problem, they will not be able to run a cable between the wall.

My last story is about radon. Radon was never a problem until the 70's when houses were sealed up, and windows became tight. I read about this Nuclear Generator maintenance worker. After work, he be tested for radiation contamination. He started getting hot readings every day. They had to find out where he was getting exposed to Nuclear radiation in the plant. They follow him around for day, checking the area where he had worked in the plant for radiation, but they found nothing. Then they checked him for radiation when he came to work, and they found out that he was getting the radiation from outside the plant. They eventually found out the radiation came from the home. This is when they coined the term radon. Radon gets trapped in a house from over insulation, sealed up tight, no leak window, and basement that are not water proof. The treatment for radon is waterproofing the basement and ventilating the basement.
In the UK, any new house built in a known Radon area, usually over granite, has to have a Radon barrier installed under the floor. It's not a great expense as it doubles as a vapour barrier.
My brother worked this job. It didn't pay well enough for the toxic exposure and the wear and tear. The whole team was on one drug or another to get through the shifts.

Do not use spray insulation. Besides being crazy toxic, when something like bugs or water inevitably get inside, that foam will hide the damage being done and you won’t notice it until it’s too late; if at all. There’s a reason batten insulation is the standard. It’s also a a lot cheaper and easier to install.
You obviously have never had spray foam done, the way they do it in this video is wrong, bugs wouldn’t get in either way, the foam is poisonous to animals and pests, it’s also water proof, it’s actually a very good solution in some cases and sometimes is even cheaper than regular insulation
@@viktorfruehauf2690the fact that it is water “proof” is part of the problem; the house cannot breath and damp has no choice but to be taken up by timbers or other porous surfaces. This method just seems foolish on so many levels. How could you ever inspect electrics or pipe work? Get rid of rodents who make a home in this stuff…..I’m not surprised banks and surveyors don’t like this stuff. @@Infinitpossibilities maybe you have never built a house, a house needs something called a “moisture barrier”, which is exactly what it sounds like, this insulation, acts as one which eliminates the need for any other barrier. This foam is also poisonous to all rodents and pests, this is the exact reason many people put spray foam in, it also insulates twice a as much as regular insulation making your bills cheaper, and as for inspection’s, I don’t really understand your argument, it’s not hard, just find the wire/pipe with a stud finder just like in any other insulation, cut out the insulation, just like any other insulation, and then respray it, just like any other insulation.

Plus, out of all types of insulation, it’s the most expensive and gives mid tier results compared to other types. No, this foam doesn’t “burn” like that.
Really everyone is missing the scariest part. It's just a mask and no fresh air. I worked in the industry. That open cell foam gets into the lungs... no good. But like ya said, next step spray the fire retardant just like for roofs. Personally I'd go with Cellulose and borate insulation.

It would be if the used the same foam as silly string. Actual less time.
Is this foam thing flammable?
@@Shiviminivlogs2092 No, the foam is am insulator. It holds in heat. The heat builds up melts the foam, and then sets the wood on fire.

No "term was coined" regarding home insulation and buildup of radioactive gas. Radon was discovered in 1899 and named "radon" in 1920.

Hi
I never thought about using a wood border to ensure the over-expansion of the foam. Thats mad smart 😮
It’s no good having something quick and easy to install if it’s a nightmare to remove; it’s a quick fix but false economy in the long run. Makes even less sense when you suggest that it only “sometimes “ cheaper.

It’s just not a good idea, if it’s not installed properly it causes far more issues than it solves, it’s hard to remove, it actually lowers your house value and not to mention the fact that it just isn’t all that safe when being installed, nor is it all that safe if you were to break it. Plus, out of all types of insulation, it’s the most expensive and gives mid tier results compared to other types. There’s just so many drawbacks to it that it isn’t commonplace here, it wouldn’t make sense.

Traditional is easy when you are doing walls and there all perfect 16 inch on center. Buttttt that is never the case. Tight gaps don’t get sealed properly. There is a ton of cutting length that has to be done. Most spray foam come in with two guys and they knock it out. Traditional is really time consuming when doing subfloors and attic’s. Also with traditional it has to be installed along with a vapor barrier. With spray foam it can also be a vapor barrier. Spray foam can be thinner and offer more r value. So no spray foam is not labor intensive at all, product is pricy.

It's not an issue with foam, it's an issue with installers not knowing what they're doing and companies not training them correctly. Just because they can squeeze the trigger and wear a respirator they think that's all they need to know to spray.
With a new house the wood is quite damp, I’ve framed homes that were soaked with rain or snow for a week or two while building. Then if this foam is sprayed on it would seal in the moisture and cause mold
yeah not sure if it was early on but they sprayed it wrong in one house and the gasses from the foam kept filling the house so they had to rip off the entire top.
Spray foam is an exceptional material, when not overused and sprayed correctly
Ни за что бы не хотела жить в таком доме. Никакого проветривания нет, представляю какой тяжёлый воздух там, даже если пена и без запаха...

In Canada they spray foam garage ceilings if a room is above it. Sometimes water lines for bathrooms run through the garage ceilings. I had to repair a water leak that was dripping in the garage. Don't even ask about how much foam I had to cut out to actually locate the pipes. 😢

This stuff ( if it is the same as) was banned in Australia in the 1970s as it gave off extremely toxic fumes if there was a fire & it either caught alight or even smouldered. A friend & I were some of the very first to use it in the State of Victoria & luckily ( not for the owners) a fire in the adjoining terrace house alerted everyone to the dangers of this stuff before even twenty houses had been sprayed. Strangely it had been approved by the govt.
Ya they worked out all the bugs in the last 50 years lol

@@getsmarty7603 . Just like they worked out the "bugs" in the herbicide Glyphosate & declared it wasn't Carcinogenic (cancer triggering). "Hold up guys I've got two more wires to run". - Electricians
And that’s why electrical should be ran through conduits.
I have wired a couple of styrofoam leggo houses ( styrofoam blocks that stack like bricks and have a hollow center). They stack them up then they pour concrete in the center.
This as all built and done before electrical and plumbing. We used an electric chainsaw to cut lines through the foam units we hit concrete, and made a slot to run our wire then come back and put the wires in against the concrete. Then our final step was to spray foam in a can and fill in all the cut marks. It was about 110 outside and in the lower level of the house that was 1/2 way underground on a hill side was about 70, and this was no ac or anything, just from the insulation
@@billybob-zg4bxGuaranteed to choose the wrong size of conduit in that case.
