Wait no but if you keep watching those birds its like a story playing out! It's a metaphor see there's this flapping of wings that represents freedom/ the wild chaos of youth, and then it seems there is spontaneous combustion and suddenly appears a second bird *dun dun dunnnn* you can figure out what this is a metaphor for. The instant reaction is to move far away at first (i.e pretend to ignore at first, or maybe events in life just carry you away from that person?) then look back, get chased after by that second bird, combine into one, separate, combine, seems like its gonna move past and then bam! random cut at a completely random time completely out of your control and that’s the end of that story. You can choose to be frustrated that you can't watch anymore or you can choose to be glad that you were able to learn as much as you could. The lives of those birds keep going but we have no idea what happened to them, just like in life when we encounter other people, we get a snapshot of their life and then bam! something happens and they’re gone from our lives. Their lives may even go on but that point is where you stopped listening in on their story.... .... ........ ............... O.O This is what happens when you watch random birds at 3:37 in the a.m.
I cannot think of a pair of humans that have convinced and entitled me to the think of the world and others more complexly and fully than you and Hank. Thank you for that. Really. Thank you.
Whatever happened to the punishment you owe, John? I know you got sick, then had to deal with the Paper Towns movie. But you can't put it off forever. We're waiting.
***** Hank definitely laid that out--getting the tattoo with no ink in the gun. I'm kind of nervous about that because I may have to get one, too. Long story.
DONE! I just binged on every vlogbrothers video from January 1st, 2007 to right now. I think I need to go outside. Also John Green, I think you owe us an inkless tattoo.
I love the idea of dictionaries influencing language in a non-prescriptive (linguistically) way, like, it's just natural that someone who sees these "fake" entries will take them as reality and then seamlessly cause them to become real words. This kind of malleability is somehow really comforting and happy-making. :)
I just finished paper towns a few days ago and I just want to say that I LOVED it. The ending to me can only be described as beautiful. The plot was soooo great and I am so exited for the movie DFTBA
My excitement for this movie cannot be contained. I read the book, and it instantly topped my favorites of books to binge read. Because quite frankly, it reminded me how much I love and crave change and adventure, despite the fact that I am the most normal and routine person alive. There's a part in the book that speaks about how before you can get the sensation that comes with leaving, you first have to grow roots. And nothing before that line has ever given me such a strong sense of excitement. It's a book that reminded me what it feels like to live. And perhaps now my head is full of fantastically ridiculous and crazy plans and ideas that will probably drive me mad, but in the best possible way. Welp, there goes me and my book rambles again.
I just loved this video. I find the notion of people owning maps and encyclopedia entries and the meanings of words very strange. The fact that the made up pieces of information circulate so quickly and so widely makes me feel that knowledge of the world in which we live will always exist outside of our kind of puny attempts to trap and explain and sort it out. Complexity is important, as you said. We can never lay the world flat on a page, or truly capture a word and its meaning in ink, or preserve history forever in the pages of reference books. This is a weird and wonderful thought.
John, fictional stories will always matter in the lives of real people. Most of us need an escape and books are the perfect place to go. Your books matter because you have the ability to entice powerful emotions out of all types of people. You are a superhero, your power is changing words into worlds. Worlds of hope, of escape, of meaningful actions that matter to people. And for that, I thank you from the bottom of my heart
From 2:32 to 2:40 I was completely indulged on the birds in the background. In other news, I completely fangirled when he said the Paper Towns trailer comes out on THURSDAY!!! Yay! I can't wait for the movie in July. Thank you John for writing these fabulous books. :)
ajbdkla3652 Please keep your rudeness to yourself. Does it matter if someone else's favourite book is not your own? Emma is allowed to express excitement for hers.
Simon Vin Simon, I was more concerned with the aggressive nature of Emma's comment. It genuinely seemed like she was trying to force her viewpoint on me. Its best just to keep all thoughts to one's self.
This is the first time that I've heard about these fictitious entries and I find them both fascinating AND mind scrambling....love the fact that I can watch your videos and learn something new! Thanks John! I can't wait to see the trailer tomorrow :D
I saw The Fault in our Stars, and I'm pretty pissed off. It had neither faults nor stars in it. I swear to god, if this one doesn't have any towns made out of paper, I'm drop-kicking a baby.
I started watching vlogbrothers videos in the months before Paper Towns was released in 2008. It's so weird and wonderful to be sitting here 7 years later (probably almost exactly) hearing about Paper Towns again.
Ahhhhhh!!!!! I'm so happy the Paper Towns movie trailer is coming out tomorrow!!!!! I read the book and it was amazing!!!! I'm so happy for you John!!!! You and Hank are such amazing people!!!!
I love how the vlogbrothers vids always make me think. I mean the entertainment factor is always high which is great but it's the thoughtfulness quotient that I truly value:)
I haven't gotten around to watching much vlogbrother videos lately but i am never disappointed! John's mannerisms and the way he speaks remind me of how he writes. I want to go read a john green novel now. *runs out of the room dramatically*
Holy crap Hold Me Closer is out!? I read your talk with David in the back of my copy of Will Grayson, Will Grayson like last year and jumped up and down around my house. I am so fricking excited about this book. WG, WG is my favorite book of all time, and I can't wait to buy this (sort of) sequel.
I keep forgetting that Hold Me Closer didn't officially come out yet, I got it at my local book festival a couple weeks ago. It's amazing! I read it super quickly! I can't wait for everyone else to read it!
Back in high school( like 4 years ago) my English teacher told the class to read a book and do project on it, I chose to read Paper Towns. Took me a while for me to recall the name 'John Green' after I watched TFIOS. Can't wait to watch Paper Towns, it's gonna be the first movie that I read the book ahead.
"100% of my current children" ...cannot tell if this is "because we might have children sometime in the future and i'm honestly just leaving it open as to not exclude any future children" or "here's a hint, dear nerdfighter, please let your imagination run WILD"
I am sure it has already been pointed out but The Fault in Our Stars was being read, and briefly talked about in an episode of season 2 of Orange is The New Black. I was so excited to see it.
I visited this antique map shop while in Maui and I kept wondering if there were any paper towns on the maps I was looking at (The oldest dating back to the 16th century) and then I thought about how I was such a nerd to be geeking out over a bunch of maps drawn by long-dead persons whom I have never heard of while visiting my mother in Maui and how I was oddly okay with that. I got off topic, but long story short, the topic of paper towns and the blend between reality and fiction has been a source of fascination for me since reading Paper Towns last summer. So thank you, John.
No worries, I geek out over maps all the time, including completely fictional ones. I tend to get mad whenever a fantasy book doesn't have a map in the front, especially when there is traveling involved. I like to know where the characters are headed and where everything is. I guess I just need visual aids for my imagination. Hi Alanna!
I'm so excited for "Paper Towns"! It's the book that introduced me to your work John, and you have been a huge inspiration to me as a wannabe writer. Thank you for being awesome.
I wrote about Agloe in one of my theory papers recently! I talked about how imagining something can turn it into a meaningful, tangible thing, like Agloe. Can't wait to see the movie! Hopefully you won't vomit!
Before i read the book I thought about the title a lot and it kind of had the meaning to me that paper towns are undiscovered towns on a map because they're just a piece of paper until you actually get out there and explore it
They shot some of Paper Towns at the little gas station up the road from my house. I was really excited. I go to that gas station almost everyday to get a pack of gum and an energy drink. Can't wait to see the movie! So proud of your success.
I never actually knew that map makers created paper towns to avoid copyright til I read Paper Towns and find it so interesting and it's actually a really good idea! Hope you don't get sick, John! I'm sure you'll be fine! I'm so excited to see the Paper Towns trailer! :D
I just reread Paper Towns - I'm so excited to see John on Today, and for the movie in general! I can't help but wonder how accurate it will be to the book. What really matters, however, is if the movie will manage to capture the essence of the story, to convey what it means to understand (or never fully understand) others, how we all affect each other, and the unique way our strings cross.
This whole fictitious entries and paper towns concept is so fascinating! I wish there was a way to find them other than comparing whole maps of the world and dictionaries. Maybe there is?
My wife and I are binge watching your first several years' videos. Gosh, I wish I had taken more note of the UA-cam's back then, but I t think I was addicted to Hulu. Cheers.
This book's so IN-DEMAND. I went to my local library's website to check out "Paper Towns". "Total copies: 61. Available copies: 0. Holds: 30". Congratulations, John Green!!!
I love the concept of paper towns on maps and made up words in dictionaries, and how they change the real world. In general I find the impact of everything that is made is very interesting in how it shapes our cultures!
I suspect that my favorite of John's books will not be seeing movie lights anytime soon ): No love for Katherines. Of course I need the Tiny Cooper play in my life now.
Oh yes, first John Green book I ever bought. All of Katherines really did helped me through my first serious breakup. Thinking logically about something so emotional gives it such a nice perspective. It helped me realize that our future is unlimited, despite feeling terribly heart broken. C:
***** wait why would he not sell the rights? how long ago did he say that, he might just not have wanted to sell the rights if it's unlikely they'll make it into a movie anyways or something?
I'm currently in an advanced language/reality class which so far the whole theme has been "language shapes our reality just as our reality shapes our language" and I just thought it was cool how you basically came to that conclusion here: "Language shapes the dictionary, but the dictionary shapes the language." Not the point you were trying to make, but one of the points I took away from this video!
Paper Towns!! I can't wait for the trailer. I love love love Paper Towns. I can't believe I have to wait until July 24th. Thank you for this beautiful story. I am so proud of you, honey.
Awww, poor John! You're worried about getting sick, but the thing you're most worried about is the gifs! This is when you know how public your life is, I'd expect...
Great explanation about Paper Town!! Now I more understand about the meaning of word "Paper Towns" good book 😊 and now I'm currently reading Will Grayson, Will Grayson...That book really amazing!! You and David Levithan really genius I think!! 😊😊👌
I love that fictitious stuff that appears in non-fictional works too. It's very captivating, and highly intriguing. Also... did anybody else stop looking at John's face/puff and start looking at the pigeon shadows outside on some kind of roof around 2:33 (about when it starts... it's when John shifts camera angles)? Just curious. The pigeons caught my attention because I couldn't see their details, just the black-greyness of shape because of the way the sun was hitting them. Also, there hasn't been any movement in the background the last few times John has vlogged from the same section of the same airport.
i was at an art class on Thursday and we were searching songs to listen to when we stumbled upon the trailer and three of us just totally fangirled and started to shriek and squeal
In a german medical Dictionary (Pschyrembel), there is an entry about the Steinlaus (Stonelice), a fictitious Animal made up in a sketch by a Comedian some 30 years ago. In one edition, they left it out, which led to widespread protest and turmoil in the medical Community, so they put it back in.
I NEED TO READ THE BOOK "HOLD ME CLOSER"!!! The book, Will Grayson, Will Grayson is awesome and I'm so excited that David Levithan actually made another book based off of it!! :)
Stories definitely matter in the lives of real people. I have always loved books and stories and writting and basically anything fictitious, but now books are my escape route. Where I go when everything gets a little too tough (tuff? I don't know how to spell it). They're a life line. Especially when the rest of the country is asleep and you want to break down and cry. Stories have shaped who I am, stories have saved me from god knows what.
Hearing John talk about Paper Towns makes my chest feel weird. I think this is called nostalgia.
I think it's all the awesome rising to your chest
***** that would be in the tummy area
have you ever looked at the world nostalgia and couldn't figure out how to pronounce it properly... OR is it just me!!
Are your lungs drowning in it?
Fourteen Lines Or maybe you have pulmonary oedema. Or as I like to call it: "Hazel Flu."
In an unsurprising turn of events, John is in an airport
I'm still waiting for Hogwarts to be placed on Google Maps.
thestrangejames It sounds a lot more impressive in the books.
Chris Parkhurst Actually, if you consider that we would only see ruins, this seems much more impressive than in the books.
but it's unplottable
squigoo touché
thestrangejames Why is Hogwarts in Canada?
MUCH BOOKS JOHN
ily btw
I subscribed. great channel and vids :)
2:32 = Bird flapping its wings in the top right. That is all.
Haha. Made my day :)

CLapping! Clapping!

Seconded
Robert G I am going to deal with it! I am not looking forward to it, but I am going to do it. -John
***** What is even the punishment? I feel it might be along the lines of John getting a fake tattoo??? Does that sound familiar?
***** Hank definitely laid that out--getting the tattoo with no ink in the gun. I'm kind of nervous about that because I may have to get one, too. Long story.
juststeveschannel Would you care to share this long story? Because I'm really curious. lol
DONE! I just binged on every vlogbrothers video from January 1st, 2007 to right now. I think I need to go outside.
Also John Green, I think you owe us an inkless tattoo.
Oh it took me a while to marathon them, Congrats!
wow.. congratulations.. one day (week/month/year) that is a bucket list goal of mine too..
I like how good a quality video this is despite it being in an airport.
(I like your videos)
TheVlog Oh hi, thanks! haha
How can just a guy talking to a camera at an airport make me question and take deep meaning to littles things? Love this channel :)
I love the idea of dictionaries influencing language in a non-prescriptive (linguistically) way, like, it's just natural that someone who sees these "fake" entries will take them as reality and then seamlessly cause them to become real words. A Paper Bridge sounds like a rather dangerous concept.

SO EXCITED FOR THE PAPERS TOWN TRAILER AND MOVIE AHHHHHHH
I knew you would be lindsey! Thanks for sharing.
Listen John, I'm here trying to keep up with these books but I won't be able to do that with you talking about more of them every vlog.
Phostose Nice video John!
Should've read them sooner.
Indie Guy Well... procrastination.
Never too late to read them :)
there isn't that many book. only 4.5
now the problem is that he is giving out small spoilers,

Not mine. Please keep your opinions to yourself.
...weird response. I'm glad you love Paper Towns!

I'm looking forward to the paper towels movie

Paper Towels... Brilliant.
I am overly excited for this trailer this is my favorite book of yours and I'm just overwhelmed with joy tbh
I love how the vlogbrothers vids always make me think. I mean the entertainment factor is always high which is great but it's the thoughtfulness quotient that I truly value:)
I haven't gotten around to watching much vlogbrother videos lately but i am never disappointed!

"I keep imagining the gifs of me throwing up on Matt Lauer" XD XD this is why I love John.
"100% of my current children"
...cannot tell if this is "because we might have children sometime in the future and i'm honestly just leaving it open as to not exclude any future children"
or "here's a hint, dear nerdfighter, please let your imagination run WILD"
Nah, it's just funnier to say 100% rather than both.
Myka Dassano super true, just wasn't my first thought.
Myka Dassano Wouldn't it be "100% of my children" then?
Emily Barber That is the way John talks. It has been very consistent for years.
Doc Nevyn jesus, i know that! i was more making a joke than anything.
My mom bought me the book of PAPER TOWNS yesterday !!!!!! I'm so excited to read all of it .....
This is really fascinating John. Excited for the trailer!
I wrote about Agloe in one of my theory papers recently! I talked about how imagining something can turn it into a meaningful, tangible thing, like Agloe. Can't wait to see the movie! Hopefully you won't vomit!
Before i read the book I thought about the title a lot and it kind of had the meaning to me that paper towns are undiscovered towns on a map because they're just a piece of paper until you actually get out there and explore it
John, I love your videos! Keep vlogging to us because you're awesome and I CAN'T WAIT FOR PAPER TOWNS. LOVE the vlogbrothers and your books!

Esquivalience is such a good word that clearly needed to exist! It's like procrastination but more on purpose and conniving.
Cheers.
so so excited, I loved paper towns when I read it. so proud how far you have come.
This book's so IN-DEMAND. I went to my local library's website to check out "Paper Towns". "Total copies: 61. Available copies: 0. Holds: 30". Congratulations, John Green!!!
This whole subject calls to mind one of my favorite short stories by Borges. "Tlon, Uqbar and Orbis Tertius."
I love that a) Paper Towns is coming and b) it's 2015 and you are still making vlogs in an aiport like it's 2007. :D
So excited for the trailer, John!!!
Katherines was really, really good, and so beautifully math-y :) I feel like it would make a great movie.
Oh yes, first John Green book I ever bought. All of Katherines really did helped me through my first serious breakup. Thinking logically about something so emotional gives it such a nice perspective. It helped me realize that our future is unlimited, despite feeling terribly heart broken. C:
kattaylordesign I think a LBD-style vlog would be cool for Katherines. A movie too, of course.
Alanna R. OMG yes. That would be awesome.
***** wait why would he not sell the rights? how long ago did he say that, he might just not have wanted to sell the rights if it's unlikely they'll make it into a movie anyways or something?
Just watched the Paper Towns trailor! It looks amazing- I can't wait!!!
I LITERALLY JUST GOT FINISHED READING PAPER TOWNS. ITS BRILLIANT
To be honest, before this video I had no idea what your "paper towns" thing was all about. Thanks for the info, now I find interest in it!
I'm really excited to see the Paper Towns trailer!! Also, good luck with the show and get better soon to your kids.
I'm currently in an advanced language/reality class which so far the whole theme has been "language shapes our reality just as our reality shapes our language" and I just thought it was cool how you basically came to that conclusion here: "Language shapes the dictionary, but the dictionary shapes the language." John! Just saw the Paper Towns Preview! I'm so excited!
You talk so quickly, you are goals
part of the movie was filmed in my neighborhood and I am incredibly excited for both the movie and the trailer ahhhhh

one of my favorite videos of yours in a while john :)
Every time I fly into or out of Indianapolis, I'm TERRIBLY disappointed to not see John Green video blogging.
Awww, poor John! You're worried about getting sick, but the thing you're most worried about is the gifs! This is when you know how public your life is, I'd expect...
Also, the puff is strong with this one
Yes!!! Tiny's back!!! I actually got post book depression when I finished will grayson it was so good omg
LOVE the trailer! CANNOT WAIT FOR THE MOVIE! Amazing cast and everything in the trailer is what I imagined when reading the book. So excited!!
John, just saw a snippet of your interview w/ TVE from Spain! You didn't forget to be awesome yay!:D
Great explanation about Paper Town!! Now I more understand about the meaning of word "Paper Towns" good book 😊 and now I'm currently reading Will Grayson, Will Grayson...That book really amazing!! You and David Levithan really genius I think!! 😊😊👌

In one edition, they left it out, which led to widespread protest and turmoil in the medical Community, so they put it back in.

He was wrong. I guessed he was in an airport! So proud of myself...
Sir, the Paper Towns movie (that i got for my birthday) was...AWSSSSOOOOMMMMEEEE!!!!!!! Loved it!
I have learnt something great today so thanks, John
I had a terrible day and you cheered me up. Congrats.
"...ya know, like a thieving lexicographer would." ABSOLUTE GOLD.
Finally PAPER TOWNS will be a movie
(It already is but, it is just coming out)
I'M SO EXCITED!
I like that you talk fast. I listen to podcasts on 200%, but if you did a podcast (you should do a podcast?) I would listen to it on normal speed.
I just love this idea so much! Something that never existed suddenly becoming something because someone else put it there.
