How many hundreds of thousands of tiny rocks and meteorites and/or asteroids could a solar sail withstand, before it's torn to shreds? Between here and wherever, it's not smooth clear sailing.

Actually, space is pretty empty. If you're a solar sail then you're very small compared to the universe. So you aren't attracting meteorites with your gravitational field. You could fly your solar sail without worry because encountering anything would be unlikely. If you do encounter something then hopefully it's friendly aliens willing to help out a hitchhiker.

The fact of the matter is that no physical matter could travel at the speed of light without the right technology , but it's true that the USA government already got that technology and they have spacecrafts capable to interstellar travel

😂 is that not the case with anything traveling through space? What has ensured any other object in space has not suffered the fate of collision? Also i would be willing to bet they can intercept any possible collisions and predetermine the route most likely to avoid any possible known asteroids etc...

Once we perfect this way of travel, we need to catch-up with communication signals.
Voyager is just outside our system and already takes 21 hours to receive signals from . We wouldn't know if a ship reached our nearest star for the amount of years we are trying to avoid in travel

      Good point.
Where I become skeptical, is on the issue of debris
and matter in space colliding with any craft. The famed
"Force Field" would be nice at such speeds but not yet fully realized.
Getting further faster is a priority, but we still need a means
of sustainable protection. Amazing time to be Alive!

Nothing. The space around the craft would warp significantly propelling the craft forward and thus never smashing into anything. Not to mention the space between celestial bodies is unfathomably significant visually speaking. The craft would be fine unless it experienced an issue in its power supplies or the lightspeed engine fails.

Sorry but the story line of the old TV series Firefly of joss whedon isn't becoming reality. Furthermore most of the propose technology in this video especially the solar sail can be realistically use for traveling around the solar system. The other like warp drive or creating bubbles is science fiction such as star trek. I think we need to focus on Earth first and clean it up. We won't be allowed to go until we do that. Sorry Elon Musk. They won't allow it.

lol people just throw words around so nonchalantly. You will need something much much faster than light speed to reach another galaxy in a human life time. In the grand scheme of things light speed is very very slow! Who wants to spend 4yrs on a ship just getting to our very next door neighbor star system just to find that there may be nothing there. I wouldn't mind wasting 6 months. but 4yrs at the speed of light is just too long. Luckily I think reaching the speed of light may be the hardest part. But once you get there I think going faster will be easier probably.
