As a child and a young man, before my beard began to grow, there was the delightful razor trimming of my hairline at the back and sides, around the ears and the bottoms of the sideburns. First, a second paper collar would be tucked in to my shirt collar. Then I would hear the whirr of the hot lather machine. Then I would have the wonderful sensual experience of having the squishy hot lather applied to my skin. Razors in those days didn't have replaceable blades, so the barber would strop the blade before he began, carefully edging my hair. He would stop and deposit the spent lather on a towel and then re-distribute the lather as he worked. The finale was the sideburns. Then, he would carefully wipe the residue off with the paper collar, brush me up and off I'd go. Barber shops had a wonderful smell, too. Tobacco smoke, mens' normal body smells, the mixture of bay rum, Lilac Vegetal, Barbasol and various hair tonics and aftershave lotions. I wish I could have bottled it. My present barber gives me a hot shave and adds the razor trim before he applies the aftershave. All men should have this wonderful experience!

I didn't know where in the world this barbershop was, but could tell it was vaguely eastern european. When you were leaned back in the chair, I saw your eyes, and there was something in the look that told me it was Ukraine.

I would think the gloves are for all the drying and damage those chemicals can do to her hands, some people are especially sensitive to drying hands, I never imagined myself becoming one of those people, I'm not especially, but my hands will get dry nowadays from just one use of shampoo in the shower....
