  • From 'Petrolicious':
The Alfa Romeo GTV6 is so much more than a pretty face. Underneath its skin, this car is pornography for engineers, and here’s why.
In 1980, the Alfa Romeo Alfetta GTV6 came out with a 60° V6 engine from the Alfa 6, fitted on a shortened Alfetta chassis. A transaxle, De Dion rear suspension, and Watt’s parallelogram linkage worked away together at the back, with wishbone suspension up front. The front brakes had ventilated discs, and the rears were inboard. Even its front camber was increased significantly to reduce understeer.
    Here’s a three-word recap: it is athletic.
The history of motorsport agrees. The GTV6 won the European Touring Car Championship from 1982 to 1985, against Audi, BMW, and Jaguar. It won the BTCC with Andy Rouse, then France, Italy, Australia…winning everywhere. It plunged into rally with the crazy French ace Yves Loubet, winning its class four years in succession from 1983 to 1986 in the Tour de Corse.

Before anyone comments, I realize that the Alfa at 2:05 is a gtv and not a gtv6... the race is just so awesome that I couldn't not include it!

A few of those were gtvs, but my mechanic said they are essentially the same car, save for the engine. That green one is the Benninca prepared 4 cylinder gtv that gets like 500hp out of a turbocharged 2 liter, competing against cars with some 800 hp or so and placing at the top (he was holding on to 2nd or 3rd place in that if I recall). Benninca had been selling suspension kits for these cars, something I would def do to mine if I ever get some disposable income! The red one with the black hood that follows the green Benninca car is also a 4 cylinder. That looks like the autodelta rally setup. Nice video!!

      Hello Nooch 86.
They are old cars now so one has to chase electrical corrosion issues, my heater control valve for inside heat has just failed so I need to track down a work around (originals for AC models are all gone now), I've had to replace the filler neck between the bodywork gas fill and the tank, new windshield in hand and ready to go in, and a history of repairs and replacements of worn out parts. And my car needs paint!
For any car of this age I call it "old-car'itus" ;-)
On the other hand I now have a 4-Cam 3.0L evolution of that fabulous Giuseppe Busso engine with GTA cams and a GoTech FI engine management system (South African even though I'm a US guy) now kicking out approximately 225 hp at the wheels (per some kind of dyno). I got a reading of 275 lbft of torque at the wheels. I'm going to leave the engine at that level as its torque output may be getting a bit close to the transmissions limit before it starts acting like a fuse.
I have a Milano Verde (75 America elsewhere I believe) transaxle with the 3.55 R&P and I've recently refreshed the LSD shims.
That much power has now overwhelmed the excellent Brembo/ATE front/rear brakes so I've upgraded to GiroDisc all around along with a Wilwood F/R brake proportioning valve to balance it all out. Have 16" OZ Volcano wheels (look nice but are heavy) with 215/45-16s on the front and 225/45-16s on the rear (probably should go 215s all around for best balance). Do have a set of 225/45-15 track tires for those days. Wow is the balance of this car nice and it really shows on the race track.
The engine bay has been stitch/seam welded. In my view to gain back lost stiffness from 37 years of use.
Bilstein shocks, larger anti-roll bars, polyurethane bushings including the deDion center pivot plus wear replacement of parts.
I've replaced the drivers side door seal. It really seals well now, but the door is harder to close. Hopefully the seal will seat or break-in to make that better in the future. The passenger side is still quite good so I'm leaving it alone. I've added more sound insulation along the floor as I figure the original insulation has lost much of its effectiveness over the years. Except now I hear more wind noise! lol!
I've got after-market Recaro seats in the car as I never liked the early GTV6 originals. Note, I'm tall so have a Recaro SPG XL race seat for extra room. But, it is a pain in the ass to get in and out of in everyday life. So not recommended for normal use.
What else? I'm sure there's more. I'll tell you this, it really goes and revs like crazy right up to the 7300 rpm limit I've set. Too bad Alan Jones and his colleagues didn't have a race prepped 3.2L GTA version of this engine for those Australian races :-)
Finally I'll add this Nooch 86, after all the mods I've done I do wonder if my car is any more fun than a bone stock GTV6 with original size tires and wheels? My car does everything "more", but is it any more fun to drive? The stock car has lower limits which means one has to be more engaged with the car. I.e. work the shift lever more to get the most from the engine, get the slip angles going on public roads in those oh-so-fun corners, and all that. One of these days I'll have to get into a stock GTV6 and see what I think!

    • @nooch86
      @nooch86  5 років тому +1

@@Snarge22 Sounds like you've got some pretty awesome mods going! The stock car is still a blast to drive, but it's hard to have a car like this and not do some kind of tinkering.... even if it sometimes makes the car slightly worse! I've replaced the engine with a 3.0lt out of a 164, I've got the 75 (Milano) LSD transaxle, and suspension wise I've got Koni adjustable shockers, stiffer rear springs and the ride hight is lowered a little. There's much more I'd like to do but money is what's holding me back. I did have a set of Dunlop Direzza ZII track day tyres for a hill climb event that I did, the grip was absolutely phenominal, but ultimately I believe that especially on the street, the stock tyre size (or close to stock) is the way to go. IMO these cars are designed to drive like an historic racing car (i.e maintaing some slip angle around the corners), rather than nailed down like a modern GT3 car.

@@nooch86 Excellent stuff there Nooch 86 and I think you're completely on the right track in viewing these cars like historic racing ones versus modern GT3 cars.

I think one of the two worst decisions I have ever made was that to sell my GTV6. I've driven a 350Z and V8 and V10 R8's and plenty of other assorted Alfas too since then. And I still wish I had my lovely GTV6. The best car I have ever owned.
