  • What's our relationship with the natural environment? Do we take the time to consider the complex and diverse ecosystems that make up our world?
K'alapa Rande Cook invites us to consider these questions with his Ecology Today series. Stemming from the work of Dr. Suzanne Simard, Rande uses her science-based understanding of tree knowledge and communication and blends it with ancient Kwakwaka’wakw ways of knowing.
    .
You may've already seen this design printed on our Ecology Today Collection. But this is Rande's original artwork, carved into red cedar. The green represents the underground root system, while certain shapes, like the ovoids, represent new growth. "I think of them essentially as being like seeds," Rande says, "where it's the beginning of something, or regeneration, or birth, or as trees themselves."
    .
The traditional art form of the Kwakwaka’wakw once spoke to these land relationships, and the Ecology Series intends to refresh that visual language for today: inviting us as observers to discuss our relationship with the natural environment.
    .
From today until Dec 10, as part of our wider fundraiser with Rande and Sierra Club BC for the Ma'amtagila legal fund, this exquisite piece of art will be part of a digital auction. Retail value: $6,000 CAD.

It's not just an art form, but in a real sense a cultural perception and expression of your relationship with your environment. Even the subtle shades of color or heavier shades. I've always been fascinated by your whole culture, customs and dress. Thank you from New Zealand. Tena koe te rangatiratanga mahi whakaaro.
