He built up a tolerance and us kids saw it as a superpower for years.* I have a similar story for the arsenic one- When I was really little (3 or 4), my dad worked at the airport roughly 45 minutes away. He worked 16-18 shifts most days and if there was bad weather, he couldn't make it home that night. There were many times we didn't see him for days while he was stuck at work, especially in the winter. Meanwhile, my mom was at home with me and my 3 siblings. Around that time, we were all 2, 3, 5 and 7. My mom started cooking, cleaning and taking care of myself and my siblings. Like, all the fucking time. This is someone who would let their kids stay in the same diaper for 18 hours straight and call family over to cook and clean for her, suddenly being a proper parent. She even started making my dad lunches around that same time. Really sweet, right? Shortly after, my dad started to get sick. Over time he got worse and worse, my mom would watch at the window for my dad to get home. She had a big smile on her face for the first month or so as she waited at the window. At one point he seriously thought he was dying, couple weeks pass and he's still feeling awful but much better than before. As time went on, he noticed the seasonings on his food increased along with his symptoms. At one point, his meals were completely coated in this seasoning. It was green, looked a little off but it was on food, so he thought maybe some oregano, parsley, basil, etc. But one day he realised he always felt worse after eating lunch my mom made and his breath reeked of garlic, so he stopped eating them and tossed them out when he got to work. He figured it was too much garlic even though he couldn't ever find much. Occasionally he'd still eat them and it wasn't as bad, but despite feeling a little better he kept avoiding them. After a couple weeks, a co-worker said how lucky yet ungrateful he was that his wife always cooked for him but he started to just trash it and kept asking my dad for his lunch but, thankfully, my dad refused and kept dumping them. He brought it up to another co-worker and she jokingly said "I bet she's putting a touch of arsenic in them!" referring to the lunches. And that's when it clicked. My dad rummaged through the house trying to find ANYTHING until he stumbled up several massive boxes of rat poison, hidden in the bottom of a closet. He checked it out and it was, in fact what he kept getting on his food. Plus it wasn't like we had a rat problem, we had 24 cats at the peak of living there and never any less than 10. My mom was adding arsenic, little by little, to his food. This went on for about 7-8 months, the last 3 or so weeks my dad didn't eat any at all. She overestimated the rat poison and was so gradual with the amounts that it was never enough. She ended up getting impatient and started adding a ton to his food hoping it'd do the trick. But of course, soon after he stopped eating them. My dad noticed that my mom had gone from happy and bubbly in the window to angry to distraught, hiding on the edge of the window holding the landline. She took out a HEFTY life insurance policy before she even started. A widowed mom with 4 young kids could surely use the money if anything were to ever happen, just looking out for the kids. It'd take some time before he dropped anyway with the way she had it planned out, no one would think of it. She was so excited at the window hoping he wouldn't come home, then angry he wasn't dead, then clinging on to hope he wouldn't arrive and she'd call the cops and play the role of a worried wife. Cleaning the house so much and taking care of us kids was preparing for the police to arrive. When I was younger I always thought it was cool that my dad had some immunity to arsenic, it was like a super power to my siblings and I. We never really thought about it, we were kids and dad was a strong and resistant to poison. And then we found out why.
